Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse
Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse | Chris Riddell
27 posts | 20 read | 30 to read
Chris Riddell's Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse is the beautifully illustrated winner of the Costa Children's Book Award. Ada Goth is the only child of Lord Goth. The two live together in the enormous Ghastly-Gorm Hall. Lord Goth believes that children should be heard and not seen, so Ada has to wear large clumpy boots so that he can always hear her coming. This makes it hard for her to make friends and, if she's honest, she's rather lonely. Then one day William and Emily Cabbage come to stay at the house, and together with a ghostly mouse called Ishmael they and Ada begin to unravel a dastardly plot that Maltravers, the mysterious indoor gamekeeper, is hatching. Ada and her friends must work together to foil Maltravers before it's too late!

While much of the humor felt aimed at a more adult audience, the resolution felt overly simplistic. Fun but forgettable. The format change to ebook played mix and match with the text and footnotes. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

Oh how I loved reading this series of witty books to my children. So many in jokes for the literary parent! Kiddos loved it more than me, still talk about them now.

It‘s a cute story for a kid in elementary school. However, I love the decor of the book. The outer pages are purple n the inside of the book is silver skulls .

A pure gaimanesque delight, this first goth girl novella by the ever brilliant Chris Riddell. The pictures could even be a little weirder, but all in all it‘s a wonderful children‘s book with a strong female lead. I look forward to reading vol two 😍

As someone who can be easily entertained, I loved Memoirs of a Mouse so much 😍 this mini book alone (found in the back cover) tops everything! 🐭📝 Written in poetry, with comic style illustrations. Super cute! 💓

This book is all-over groovy, with metallic cover glamour, and a ribbon bookmark. The illustrations are hilariously cool. The story includes lots of tributes to the classic writers and artists (another clue in this picture) that makes the family linage theme; neat for the Hotel Transylvania fans. Neat quick reading!

Goth Girl is adorable! She‘s smart, sweet, lonely and kind of shy; a wonderful heroine in my opinion! She ends up making some friends and exploring her large estate (gorgeous maps included!) to solve a mystery and save the day!! This had a Tim Burtony vibe which I am ALWAYS down for and I‘ve already purchased the next three. My only complaint is that I wish I would have known the hard cover version comes with a bonus book inside. #LitsyAtoZ #G

Chris Riddell!!!! 🙌🏻 I absolutely adore his illustrations and while researching for reading challenges discovered he has a middle grade series. Truth be told had I never heard of him and seen the title I‘d have been sold immediately regardless. So excited about this!! #LitsyAtoZ #G

Oh fun! I've always loved Chris Riddell's illustrations but I've never read anything written by him. Goth Girl is a delightful adventure, chock-full of sly, pun-tastic literary and historical allusions (Jane Ear!) that had me giggling on virtually every page. And of course the illustrations are BEAUTIFUL. #ReadHarderChallenge2018 "The first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series".

My son, @the_magicreader, likes Goth Girl. We still have to get his sister infected, but I think this will happen soon.

I'd like wallpaper like the one in the picture. 😉

If you love Chris Riddell, read no further. Just go get these. Ada Goth lives in Ghastly-Gorm Hall with her father Lord Goth. She is a typical Riddell heroine in that she is smart and plucky, as well as wonderfully drawn 🙂
Full of capers and wonderful supporting characters, AMAZING drawings throughout, and amusing puns, twists, and turns.
