The beautiful Christmas decorations at #Foyles. Always worth a visit, they‘ve got a fantastic children book section, lots of different non-fiction categories, and their fiction recommendations are always worth it.

I had a day up London yesterday and my friend was desperate to go to the largest bookshop in London so off to Foyles by Leicester Square we went. We may have both bought a few books, but if anyone asks Ian spent more than me...which for once is the truth 🤣

My favourite photo while bookhunting in London. One of my fave bookstores - we must have gone to this place 3 or 4 times while we were there two weeks back.
GatheringBooks in London, indeed.

Foyles have now got the same scheme as Waterstones. So check your points and if you have any remaining from the old scheme I think it said that you can can transfer those points to this scheme but please check the website for more information. Also I now feel more inclined to buy off the website as I always felt pressured by the year limit to the points or didn't buy cos I didn't want to lose points.

Not a Christmas present but part of a leaving present. How cool is this?

#holidaytradition time - today me and @moll took a trip to foyles to say hello to all the books, spend too much money and drink coffee before heading out to a Christmas movie. Our foyles trips are always amazing and we did a lot of 2022 reading planning which is always fun. Now I just need to work out how to start my career as a professional book recommender.

#wintergames2021 #mistletoemaniacs @Clwojick

RaeLovesToRead 😍😍😍😍 Next December I'm going to have to come down to London and visit all the twinkly bookstores ❤ 3y
Emilymdxn @RaeLovesToRead foyles is the absolute best! I recommend it highly 3y
RaeLovesToRead If it's the one on Charing Cross Road, I visited a few years back... came out with a ton of books and awesome notebooks 😎 If you find anywhere that's taking CVs for professional book recommender sign me up too, haha. 3y
Clwojick So pretty! ❤️ 3y

julesG Thanks for the tag @Buechersuechtling @ju.ca.no 5y
Buechersuechtling Is The Martian” readable or is it just like the most awkward “Voyager” episodes in the loop but in writing❓ That is: Full of technobabble, you know what I mean❓ (Before you ask: Yes, I love “Voyager”, but I also heard about “The Martian” that it‘s entertaining but detailed and so complicated to read and to understand.) 5y
ju.ca.no Neverwhere🥰 5y

julesG @Buechersuechtling I didn't find it complicated. My son read it at age 13/14 (in German) and likes to listen to the English audiobook version. It's very entertaining and the science and technology is very well explained 5y
Freespirit Thanks @julesG . I will work on my answers😘 5y

After @wanderinglynn ‘s post about Foyles I couldn‘t believe I‘d never been! So I dropped in today with a friend I was visiting in London. Came away so inspired with books I want to read, and have earmarked several for presents later in the year. I also may have bought myself one for the train ride home... Thank you for the inspiration litsy!!! You‘re genuinely all changing my life.

wanderinglynn That‘s awesome! Isn‘t it a lovely bookstore. ❤️📚 Thanks to @Mitch for recommending it to me! 5y
Mitch It‘s the most wonderful place. Glad you enjoyed! 5y
Mrs_B Thank you @Mitch! I could have spent a very long time and a lot of money there! 5y

After Waterstones (which wasn‘t the main one on Piccadilly, but we‘re going to go there either tomorrow or Friday), we hit Foyles, which was also an amazing and beautiful bookshop. The directory is a bit hard to read, but trust me when I say it was comprehensive.

Seriously, I may never leave London. 🤩📚❤️

wanderinglynn @ShyBookOwl You have to add this one to your list of bookshops to visit. 😉 5y
TrishB Love this shop ❤️ 5y
wanderinglynn @TrishB me too! It had an awesome foreign book section. 5y

Oryx Make sure you go to Hatchards on Piccadilly. It's near Waterstones. 5y
TrishB Always go when in London! 5y
Scochrane26 It‘s been a lifelong dream to go to England & Ireland. I want to see so many London sites, but now I also just want to go to the bookstores. 5y
wanderinglynn @Scochrane26 I recommend both. I absolutely fell in love with Ireland. I‘d go back in a heartbeat. I‘d move to Ireland if I could. London has been amazing too. I‘d been here before but there‘s just so much to see & do. Plus the bookstores are awesome. 5y
wanderinglynn @Oryx thanks! Will do. 😀👍🏻 5y
Scochrane26 @wanderinglynn I was thinking of going this summer but unexpectedly changing jobs has derailed my plans. Need to have more vacation time & more $ saved. My gmo was from Ireland, so I‘ve always wanted to go. 5y
LiteraryinPA When I was in London this fall I LOVED FOYLES!!!!!!! 5y
LiteraryinPA I also enjoyed Daunt Books in London, if you‘re in the Marylebone area. 5y
CarolynM Hatchards is my favourite @Oryx 🙂 5y
Velvetfur Aw I loved Foyles when I lived in London, but we do have some fab bookshops here in the North too so I'm not competent bereft! 😂 5y
Velvetfur Not *completely* bereft, I meant to say - but I wasn't competent enough to check my spelling!! 😂 5y
julesG Had to drag my kids out of Foyles one afternoon after we'd spent hours in there and I had planned to hit Waterstones Piccadilly for the Chris Riddell drawing in the children's section. (the promise of that drawing got them moving) 5y

Quick trip into foyles Charing Cross road - I made my boyfriend duck in with me as we were walking past! Not a super original choice but it will always be one of my fave bookshops in London. When I was younger and it was in different premises my mums day trips there with me as a kid were some of the most exciting days of my life.

Just wish I could afford any of the books... I came away without buying anything but did reserve one in the library

Tamra The constant tension in a book lover‘s life. 5y
Emilymdxn @tamra I bought groceries this morning and my banking app started shouting at me about running out of money 😬😬😬 which helps me keep the book buying ban going for sure 5y
ljuliel The good thing about going into a bookstore is that you might get some good ideas of what to reserve at your library. Just think of the good feeling you‘ll have when you get the book for free , and still have that $25 or $30 in your wallet. You‘ll get both things ! 5y
See All 9 Comments
Emilymdxn @ljuliel you‘re absolutely right!! I got some good ideas for gifts for family and friends over Christmas and will reserve others in the library. I always love the atmosphere of a gorgeous bookshop, particularly one I have such a connection with, and I‘m learning to appreciate just being there without the pressure to buy things! 5y
ljuliel The last time I was in a big bookstore, it was a bit overwhelming. I honestly didn‘t know where to start. I think I‘ve grown so used to clicking online for a book , it‘s become a habit. I need to try REALLY hard to curb my spending also. I need to focus solely on library books now. I honestly don‘t know why I buy them, as I don‘t keep them once done. It‘s much more sensible for me to use the library. No offense to those that have nice shelves ! 5y
Emilymdxn @ljuliel I recently moved to a new flat that is costing me a lot more money than I was spending before living with my parents, and it‘s quite nice how simple it is now knowing that I CAN‘T spend lots of money on books as opposed to before when it was a bad idea but I could get away with doing it. I still treat myself sometimes but I have a backlog to work through and a very close relationship with my library audiobook app! 5y
ljuliel Yes, it seems most people who buy lots of books are always facing the dilemma : I need to read the books I own ...but at the same time, are always on the lookout for new books. I think all readers are in that boat. Doesn‘t matter how many books we have at our fingertips, we are always looking for new ones. 5y
Emilymdxn @ljuliel yes I know that feeling so well! My head struggles to register that I could probably buy no books and be good for five years of reading... I just always feel i need more 5y
rwmg @ljuliel @emilymdxn As the meme has it, we buy books because we imagine we are buying the time to read them 5y
