Faithless: A Novel | Karin Slaughter
32 posts | 68 read | 30 to read
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Karin Slaughter's Unseen. Brilliant plotting, relentless suspense, raved the Washington Post. A new synonym for terror, crowned the Detroit Free Press. The critics agree: no one writes suspense like Karin Slaughter, whose thrillers featuring medical examiner Sara Linton and her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, have propelled her to the top of bestseller lists the world over. Now Slaughter fuses her unmatched grasp of forensic science and a mastery of complex relationships in a riveting tale of faith, doubt, and murder. The victim was buried alive in the Georgia woodsthen killed in a horrifying fashion. When Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver stumble upon the body, both become consumed with finding out who killed the pretty, impeccably dressed young woman. And for Sara and Jeffrey, a harrowing journey begins, one that will test their own turbulent relationship and draw dozens of lives into the case. Lena Adams is one of them. A Grant County detective for years, she has her own reasons for being drawn to this case and a fierce drive to see justice done. For these three people, who have each seen the darkest side of human nature, the body of the murdered girl is but the first in a series of shocking and sordid revelations. Now, as Jeffrey and Sara narrow the field of suspects, they must confront their own doubts and indiscretions, while Lena Adams sees herself reflected in the frightened eyes of a battered woman who may be the key figure in the case. As Faithless builds to a stunning and unforgettable climax, Karin Slaughter masterfully brings together strands of interlocking lives, family secrets, and hidden passions with one astounding truth: the identity of a killer who is more evil and dangerous than anyone could have guessed.

I've always thought my dislike for this book stemmed from the Grant County ending being spoiled for me just before starting this specific book. But after this re-listen I've realised that, that's not the reason.
I just wasn't as invested in this story as the previous ones, and it felt unnecessarily drawn out.

This one was a bit slow and tedious. There just wasn‘t much of a thrill in the storyline. People were murdered, the case was investigated, the murderer was arrested, and case closed. The back-and-forth with Sara and Jeffrey is getting tedious as well. Either Jeffrey is obtuse, selfish or just plain stubborn. Perhaps he‘s all three. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

TheSpineView Great job on finishing despite being lackluster. 1y
deeannloso @TheSpineView Thank you. Yeah, some books you just have to push your way through. It wasn‘t a terrible book, it just wasn‘t as good as the rest in the series. 1y

Not a crazy amount of reading done today as I left work early to take this little Wiggle to the city for his first ever concert 🥰

I did manage to finish the last little bit my #audiobook on the highway though. I'm not sure if I need a break from the series or what but I wasn't feeling this story as much as the others. It was good, but not great. One more to go!

Lizpixie The Wiggles!🙌My kids were huge fans now THEIR kids are obsessed. It‘s amazing how many of their songs I remember, singing Hot Potato Hot Potato & Rock-A-Bye Your Bear with my grandson after I sang it with his mother is so cool. I remember when Anthony was in The Cockroaches with all the original Wiggles, I saw them play at a local club in the late 80s!(god I feel old👵🏻) 2y
FantasyChick @Lizpixie It was an AMAZING show!! They even did a few of our Canadian classics. It was well worth it and we all sang and danced along. I don't think The Wiggles will ever get old! 2y

With this read I finished off my #BookSpinBingo board this month for my audiobooks. #LittenListen @aperfectmjk

I thought book 4 was so-so, but this next book was brilliant, bloody, and better than all the previous ones. 😍

I felt all of the characters had equal time in this fast-paced mystery that invoices a religious family with a big secret.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

Slaughter doesn‘t disappoint. There is always a lot of violence & evil characters, twists & turns, plus we always learn so much more about Sarah , Jeffrey, & Lena .Weird bookish coincidence, one of the bad guys in Slaughters book has the same wound as Jeffrey MacDonald .I have had this on the radar for awhile (thanks @vivastory ) So I will take it as a sign to read Morris book next ! (Already an * MacDonalds wounds more extensive.)

This took SO long! Not because it was bad, July was just an absolute crazy month (like the whole world knows) ANYWAY I know what‘s coming in the next book, and I‘ve always been team will, and no time for jeffrey, but I think he finally won me over.., I know, I know, bad timing.

Another good showing from Karin Slaughter. In rural Catooga County, a church/farm experiences a higher than normal number of deaths. Is this simply due to the nature of recovering addicts they serve or something more sinister? Twists and drama make this an entertaining #crime #thriller. Narration in a southern dialect (note I didn‘t say “kuntry”) adds some Georgian flavor.

I loved this installment of Karin Slaughter‘s Grant County series. It was so much better than the 3th and 4th! This one is about a religious community where strange things happen and no one wants to talk. Of course there is a gruesome murder, but also lots of twists and strong characters. My favorite Sara Linton book so far! One more book to go.

Book 5 in the Grant County series and it's no surprise that I enjoyed it! This one was a smidge convoluted and there were a bunch of characters to keep up with, but that's really just me nitpicking. Another solid Slaughter read 😄

I generally like Karin Slaughter‘s books and this one was no exception. Although I will have to say the domestic violence aspect of the plot angered me — not because it was bad (it wasn‘t) — but because the very idea that there are people out there who would do such things to the people they claim to love just enrages me. Good characters and plot, and a mostly satisfying ending.

TrishB There are definitely those people 😔 7y

A well written thriller that explores our preconceived beliefs about the religious. Yes, some are bad but most are good, just like all groups. The murders were horrifying and played on my fears. The resolution of the murder was satisfying. The personal lives of the detectives was not as satisfying for me but not bad either. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book 📚

YESSSSS here is the relationship and banter that I want with Jeffrey + Sara, and I am even happy with where Lena is at the end of this book. ( I think. I‘m always afraid to say with her-she‘s such a wild card.)

The crime/procedure isn‘t my favorite of the series but I love the way Lena + Jeffrey + Sara work together in and out of the office.

KSlaughter always scares me for what‘s coming up on the literal last page or two. GASP + bring on book 6.

TrishB A great series 👍🏻 7y

My mother-in-law and I have been trading this series back and forth this year. It‘s such a great series, and the characters are solid, real people. I also love that my MIL and I bond over books so much. She‘s the best!

Maike I've only read some of her Will Trent books so far, but I love her writing. Sara just made an appearance in Undone, so I'll make sure to check out her storyline as well 7y
RiotMom @Maike yes! I‘ve really enjoyed them. I‘ve only read one Will Trent so far, but it was good. Looking forward to jumping into him when I finish this series! 7y
