Unnatural Causes | P. D. James
15 posts | 26 read | 9 to read
Maurice Seton was a famous mystery writer -- but no murder from his imagination could equal the ghastliness of his own death. When his grotesquely mutilated corpse is found in a drifting dinghy, ripples of horror spread among his bizarre neighbours: the cruel and cynical drama critic, the celebrated recluse, the rakish young heir, the terrified woman waiting for her killer in a lonely house... It is up to Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh and his extraordinary aunt to discover the shocking truth about Seton's past -- before the plot takes another murderous turn. From the Paperback edition.

This is my favorite Dalgliesh by far. Really, really good. I think it‘s the setting for the most part, but James seems to be hitting her stride as well. I had to laugh about 3/4 of the way through though when Adam thought “and he knew how it was done.” Do we get to know then? As @TheAromaofBooks will tell you, NO. NO WE DO NOT.

Another book crossed off my #BookSpinBingo card!

Sunset from the hot tub the other night. We have snow!

TheAromaofBooks Grrrrr Adam and his superior knowledge!! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks He's just so smug about it! 3y
MittenGirlPeach He so is! I laughed so hard when I read that line. But this one was really good. The best one I‘ve read by far. 3y

An old fashioned convoluted murder mystery! Like your murder mysteries complicated, unlikely and deliciously delivered? Look no further.

I‘ve read these before and thought I remembered liking them, but I had a hard time with this one. It was nap inducing much of the time. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterU #MountTBRChallenge #29

Dagliesh is on vacation at his aunt's along the coast. Just off a rough case and he falls into anther. The corpse of a neighbor of his aunt shows up along the shore in a boat belonging to the half brother. The corpse's hands have been chopped off after death. After the autopsy, it appears that the man died from natural causes. Dagliesh suspects foul play, especially after the half brother dies from poisoning.

A stressful couple of days (although my son did well at his fencing 🤺 tournament). So when stressed I go to murder (and, sometimes, mayhem). #de-stressing

Lcsmcat And P. D. James is an excellent author to turn to! 7y
EvieBee I just started rereading this one, because I find crime in books comforting too! Lol 7y
youngreadrshelf @Lcsmcat yes, now one of my go-to authors! 7y
youngreadrshelf @EvieBee I think I like that there is a completion and, usually, a pretty happy ending. 7y

Forgive me for the visual assault. This absolutely revoltingly ugly, early 1990's cover must stay on my shelf because it's signed and inscribed to me by P.D. James. 😂 #BadCoverGoodBook #AprilBookShowers

TheLondonBookworm Haha that's kinda cool in its explosiveness though! 8y
KerriNTurner Hilarious! Is that a belt on the cover?! 8y

drokka The thing with late 80s-early 90s, book covers is that if you look for them among your other books, they're the ones waving, jumping up and down, and yelling 'Yoo-hoo! It's me; over here'. 8y
rabbitprincess Wow, a P.D. James omnibus with that cover?! That is terrifying. 8y
RealLifeReading And that colour... ugh 8y

erzascarletbookgasm Yucky cover, but I love PD James! 8y
Jess_Read_This Omg. *shudder* You are correct! Why do they murder the covers of omnibus editions? 8y
Chessa Soooo 80s! 😂 8y

Like all her Dalgleish mysteries, it takes some focus at the beginning to keep all the characters straight but excellent character development, pacing and descriptions of time and place make it all worthwhile. Plus the plot. And a clever crime as usual tho not her best. Bonus is new insight into Dalgleish's character.

Read this one while my wife and daughter toured London on a special trip, so I got to live a little vicariously.

I loved the atmosphere of the story and how the author fleshed out the characters and made them real. They were very human and interesting. I figured out who had done it quite early on but not the why. It was an enjoyable read and a good study in human psychology.

Starting this little gem today that I found at the second hand shop. I love old books, they have a feel to them and smell fantastic.

Found this pretty dated, frankly. And Dalgleish is a remarkably unattractive hero though the author is clearly madly in love with him.
