A Seditious Affair
A Seditious Affair: A Society of Gentlemen Novel | K.J. Charles
11 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
K. J. Charles turns up the heat in her new Society of Gentlemen novel, as two lovers face off in a sensual duel that challenges their deepest beliefs. Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. Hes not lovable, or even likable. Hes an overbearing idealist, a Radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hangedor spare his life. A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the Radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each others deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silass politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart. For June's #URC2023 I only managed to read one book. I'm going to start panicking soon, especially if I keep on with my little challenge mode to sweep most of it with queer romance. Every book so far is m/m romance, except An Unsuitable Heir, which is nb/m. A Seditious Affair got me to re-read William Blake, although I sadly don't have a complete works or physical copies of any of the Romantics. 😭

This one for the #URC2023 is a bit of a stretch since it has more to do with foundations of modern anarchist philosophy than specifically trade unionism. Still, reading about the Regency unrest resulted in me reading Byron's pro-Luddite speech against the Frame Bill, which I highly recommend. I do have a complaint about the cover, as I have no idea who that man is - both MCs are going grey, this bloke is far too young.

This one is darker and less fun than A Fashionable Indulgence, but I got into it fully in the end. I should never doubt K.J. Charles!

This one feels slower going than the first, because I'm not really excited by either of the characters. I can see Silas' worth, but I'm more iffy about Dominic and his shitty politics.

Unrealistic setup and ending but K.J. Charles makes it work. Two men who are political enemies find love. It‘s a story for our times. #romantsy ❤️❤️❤️❤️

CarolynM K J Charles can make anything work! I even enjoyed Spectred Isle which is well weird and completely out of my usual reading genres 6y
Christy2318 @CarolynM I haven‘t read that one yet but since I‘ve really liked every K.J. Charles book I‘ve read so far, I‘m sure I eventually will. She‘s great. 6y

Another month in which I read a ridiculous amount, thanks in large part to my NOVA and MS MARVEL rereads and my K.J. Charles-a-thon.

August was full, but excellent. I read two 5-star books (the other was A GENTLEMAN'S POSITION, also by Charles), two 4.5ers (THE PRINCE AND THE DRESSMAKER by Jen Wang and AFTER THE WEDDING by Courtney Milan), and a slew of 4-star things. I also very much enjoyed my Diviners and Red Rising audio rereads.

xicanti @Suzze for fiction, I'm loving Katherena Vermette and Thomas King. She's published prose, poetry, and a comic, and they're all wonderful. He's written litfic (which I haven't read yet) and crime fiction, and his nonfiction is also fabulous. For other nonfiction, Chelsea Vowell and Arthur Manuel are well worth seeking out, and I highly recommend a thick, comprehensive anthology called 6y
Suzze @xicanti Thanks! I just did a screenshot of your reply. I ordered Surviving Canada. It will be a good companion to my 6y

Damn, y'all. This book starts with rough sex, moves along into bookclub-as-aftercare, and never lets up from there. Charles blends intense, infuriating early 19th century politics with one hell of a class- and party-straddling romance, and the results are phenomenal. I'm in booklove.

NB: A SEDITIOUS AFFAIR's timeline overlaps with A FASHIONABLE INDULGENCE, and unlike most romance series you should absolutely read the books in publication order.

mcipher Those underpants... 😆 7y
dylanisreading @mcipher I'm pretty sure they're breeches a la the Recency era haha. The character is described as wearing them in the first few pages. 7y
mcipher Okay that makes SO much more sense than beige tighty-whiteys. Ignore my gutter brain. 😬😊 7y

KJ Charles does a simply masterful job incorporating historical events into her books. I love the Regency era but it's a shame that much of the political strife and cultural production is glossed over in romance because it's so INTERESTING. There was so much William Blake in this book, you guys. SO MUCH. Also Mary Shelley. I loved it.

I can't get enough of this series. Clever, funny, romantic, and unafraid to tackle matters of the heart and issues of social justice!
