In Pale Battalions
In Pale Battalions | Robert Goddard
8 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
Six months after her husband's sudden death, Leonora Galloway sets off for a holiday in Paris with her daughter Penelope. At last the time has come when secrets can be shared and explanations begin... Their journey starts with an unscheduled stop at the imposing Thiepval Memorial to the dead of the Battle of the Somme near Amiens. Amongst those commemorated is Leonora's father. The date of his death is recorded and 30th April, 1916. But Leonora wasn't born until 14th March 1917. Penelope at once supposes a simple wartime illegitimacy as the clue to her mother's unhappy childhood and the family's sundered connections with her aristocratic heritage, about which she has always known so little. But nothing could have prepared her, or the reader, for the extraordinary story that is about to unfold. From the Paperback edition.

#12Booksof2020 @Andrew65 #Day7
I have several books by this author, thanks to @EadieB who introduced me to him. This was a great story with twists and turns, as the protagonist tries to unravel the story of her birth and of her mother.

EadieB Yes! I liked this one too! (edited) 4y

You must read this book. I thought for sure I knew the murderer, but then I didn't. I thought the story told was all there was, but it wasn't. Definitely my favorite of the Goddard books I've read so far.

#Adventrecommends Day 1
First of my favourite 24 books, and I will post one each day. I love Robert Goddard books and this I think is my favourite of his. He is such a master story teller.

ljuliel Excellent book! I read this SO long ago. Maybe time to try it again. 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel I love Robert Goddard books and this is one of my favourites. Not sure why he‘s not more popular. A real favourite. 5y
ljuliel I remember finding this many years ago around Christmas in a department store that‘s been closed and now torn down. After I read it I started looking for others and read several right in a row as soon as I found them. My favorite is Past Caring. They‘re all good though. 5y

Still playing catch up #MarchMadness Hundreds to choose from but these are the #favouriteThriller and #FavouriteCrime Books I have gone for. If you have not read any Robert Goddard you have to, he is one of my favourite storytellers, and the master of the twist, tells cracking yarns. As for Jacko Vance in Wire in the Blood he is just plain evil! A wolf in sheep‘s clothing. #favoritethriller #favoritecrime

RachelAmphlett Both cracking choices! I see Robert Goddard has a new one out, too 7y
Andrew65 @RachelAmphlett Thanks 👍Yes I‘ll be interested to see how he takes the Janes Maxted series forward, loved the first three - all personal favourites. 7y
batsy I was interested in Robert Goddard's Panic Room cos it recently popped up in a Guardian round-up. But the Kindle preorder is $27 😳 7y

Andrew65 @batsy That‘s a ridiculous price, why do they do that! £.99 in the UK, which I still wouldn‘t pay. (edited) 7y
batsy Kindle pricing is truly baffling! 7y
Dulcinella I love the McDermid series! 7y
Andrew65 @Dulcinella Definitely, one of my favourite series. Have you read the latest one? 7y
Dulcinella Not yet @Andrew65 not yet, on my list :-) 7y
Andrew65 @Dulcinella It is certainly an interesting one! 7y
Dulcinella Ok, just went up on my tbr ! 7y
Andrew65 @Dulcinella Will be interested to see what you make of it and especially the ending. 😊 7y

Everyone simply #MustRead one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors. Robert Goddard knows how to tell a cracking yarn! The master storyteller in my opinion. You won‘t regret it! #readingresolutions.

Melissa_J Is this a standalone? That cover! I‘ve visited the Thiepval Memorial and it was an emotional experience. 7y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J Yes it is a standalone and events in the book relate back to World War One. A cover like this means so many things to so many people for so many reasons. The book does take in the Thiepval Memorial, in fact that‘s where everything starts. (edited) 7y
