📚Sidney & 📺Sidney have long since parted ways. Which is a shame cause 📚Sidney, really all the characters, are more complex than 📺counterparts. 📚Sidney is middle-aged but still the rebel young vicar at heart. Still loves his whisky & jazz but now listens to Pink Floyd as well. I love his heart, his compassion, his vow to change his Church for the better. Dear Sweet Leonard You deserve every happiness. #bookvstv #bookdoesitbetter #grantchester
How could I not have known that Pink Floyd has a song called Grantchester Meadows? It was quiet the morning when we there. I guess mad cows and hippies only show up for Sidney🌻🐄🐝

The fifth instalment of the Grantchester Mysteries is very much a Pick from me.
I began reading this series because I was curious to see how a person of faith in late 20th century England would be portrayed. Would he be an object for ridicule? Would he be holier-than-thou? Wish-washy? Hateful?
But this series presents beautifully realised characters who struggle meaningfully and lovingly with the complexities of life.

My hedgehog socks feel very autumnal as I finish this surprisingly deep and thoughtful mystery.
"St. John of the Cross once wrote: 'In the evening of our life, we shall be judged by our loving.'"

"He could not quite believe the camaraderie that was on display. He felt that everyone was going through the motions of having a good time in order to avoid any true show of feeling; that those around him were willing everything to be all right even though they knew it probably wasn't."
This is my experience with drinking culture in a society in conflict. I've found it to be rarely fun and never relaxing.
This cottage is located in Grantchester, England, where this series of books takes place.
I picture Sidney Chambers living in a little place like this with his faithful dog and his trusty curate.
(From the Britain and Ireland In Time Facebook page.)
I liked this detail from the cover.
This is book 5 in the Sidney Chambers series, and I've enjoyed them all.
Another addition to yesterday's lovely #LibraryHaul .
...and a final pic of the books I opened yesterday, because my photo then was pretty 😐. Thank you so much @ TrishB! These will keep me out of trouble for months! Kind of wishing I didn't have to work, and could get on with some reading. 😁#summersantagoespostal #summersolsticebookexchange
No man is matriculated to the art of life till he has been well tempted. George Eliot,(Romola)
Still working my way through this - short (ish) stories make for great bedtime reading. I do like Sidney - the best bits of the C of E!
Found this on the shelf for a bit of bedtime reading - Sidney Chambers number 5!
We're well into the 1960s now - complete with hippies and cults.
