""The Last Final Girl" is like Quentin Tarantino's take on "The Cabin in the Woods." Bloody, absurd, and smart. Plus, there's a killer in a Michael Jackson mask." - Carlton Mellick III, author of "Apeshit" Life in a slasher film is easy. You just have to know when to die. Aerial View: A suburban town in Texas. Everyone's got an automatic garage door opener. All the kids jump off a perilous cliff into a shallow river as a rite of passage. The sheriff is a local celebrity. You know this town. You're from this town. Zoom In: Homecoming princess, Lindsay. She's just barely escaped death at the hands of a brutal, sadistic murderer in a Michael Jackson mask. Up on the cliff, she was rescued by a horse and bravely defeated the killer, alone, bra-less. Her story is already a legend. She's this town's heroic final girl, their virgin angel. Monster Vision: Halloween masks floating down that same river the kids jump into. But just as one slaughter is not enough for Billie Jean, our masked killer, one victory is not enough for Lindsay. Her high school is full of final girls, and she's not the only one who knows the rules of the game. When Lindsay chooses a host of virgins, misfits, and former final girls to replace the slaughtered members of her original homecoming court, it's not just a fight for survival-it's a fight to become "The Last Final Girl."

I‘m not a horror girl at all, but this was over-the-top fun. A nod to slasher films, this had tons of great pop culture references and humor, but still plenty of gore, because it is a horror book.

I am not sure what this adds to Stephen Graham Jones's oeuvre. It's written like someone's describing a slasher film, tons of movie references, a couple of twists, of course, but way too wink-wink, tongue in cheek for me to enjoy for as many hours as it took to listen to it. It reads like a warm-up for The Indian Lake Trilogy.

Bailing on this about half way through, I‘m just not enjoying it even though I like the concept.

This is both not what I hoped it would be, AND a perfect example of where the Final Girl trope has ended up /evolved to. The genre is trying so hard to outsmart itself that I'm left unsure of who to root for, who the villain is. I suppose I'm naive, I prefer a clearer good vs evil vibe from this subgenre, and at LEAST one sympathetic, if complex survivor.

Bailedbailed

This confirms it for me - I don‘t get on with this author‘s writing style, I have read one and not enjoyed it and DNF‘d this one and another one 👎🏻

Bailedbailed

Book 27🎧

Not typically one to bail (especially on a Final Girl book!) but this ones just kind of messy? I got about 60% but I‘m tired of hearing it😂

Trying to nip on the heels of Scream, it tries to call out the cliches of a typical slasher film while it‘s happening. Which usually I‘d be game for (RUN JAMIE!!😂) but the story jumps a lot to mimic a movie and it makes it confusing😵‍💫

There was a Bill & Ted shout out, that was the best part.

Larkken Too bad! I usually love this author. 3y
BeeMagical @Larkken I know😭 I had high hopes for this one! 3y

@kamoorephoto My camera stinks, but the #creepychristmas package was amazing & so much more than I expected! The number of books in this box was astounding; as was the fact that there was only 1 included I had actually read (but Nicole hadn't, so I passed it to her)! Add in the candy, the scarf, the Krampus details, the tarot, the pet items, etc., & I'm speechless. I opened it early to cheer a bad week, & it went above & beyond. Thank you! 😱 😻

witchyreader13 Oh, and I've never seen Persephone love a dangly toy as much as she loves the franken-mouse you sent, so thank you from her too! Lol 3y
kamoorephoto You should post a photo when you can of your Kitty!!! I tried to packed in as much as I could in your box… 3y
witchyreader13 @kamoorephoto I definitely will! It really looks like we had a lot of fun picking everything out. Helps that we have a lot of the same reading interests! :) 3y

Jones yet again delivers a completely unique book with an intriguing writing style, but sadly for me it just never came together. The book is written in script form and it's as if you're reading, instead of watching, a cheesy "B" movie. This style doesn't give room for good character development which made it difficult for me to become fully invested.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y

I wanted to love this book. So much potential, but in my #unpopularopinion it missed the mark.
The good- Story was great fun; would be a good slasher movie; ❤️ the movie references; a few unexpected twists.
The bad- It tried too hard and was a bit too cutesy with its meta-horror “cleverness “. I HATED the writing style, extremely annoying/confusing. No character development.
The Ugly- so many plot holes, where to begin? Where‘s Crystal?
😒

Texreader This photo! 😂😂😂 what a great way to graphically describe the book to us!! 4y

Thanks for this @ChasingOm I am very into spooky books so this is a perfect prompt for me!

Tagging a book by the same author as The Only Good Indians which I loved just as much and haven‘t seen as much love for! Perfect for Scream and slasher fans. I‘ve been looking a lot recently for horror by authors of colour and it is HARD to find things. #integrateyourshelf

WhatWouldJaneDo I really loved this one too! Stephen Graham Jones is one of my faves. 4y

45 mins into day 3 of #cyoreadathon I‘ve finished this brilliant ode to slasher movies. So meta id say it‘ll be too much for some people but I drank it up with a spoon, so clever and irreverent.

Unfortunately no supernatural here so just 6 points for #teamharkness #scarathlon2020 @StayCurious @Sace

Didn‘t quite make it to seven hours on my second day of the #cyoreadathon but I got quite close! Maybe tomorrow. Keeping it very spooky in the spirit of the #scarathlon2020 - I‘ve loved or am currently loving all these books so it‘s been a good reading day.

Ever wonder what a "B" horror movie would be like if you watched it with your eyes closed and the described video on? Yeah, me either but fortunately there's an #audiobook for that!

Luckily, I LOVE cheesy B horror movies so I enjoyed this. Not great, but definitely a pick if you love slashers where every character knows they are in a slasher. Cheesy names like Jamie "Lee" Curtis are a must ? ????

“You ever feel like you‘re in the prequel, like?” Izzy says to Brittney. “Like the important stuff, the stuff that really matters, it‘s just next, after this?”
