The Famished Road
The Famished Road | Ben Okri
So long as we are alive, so long as we feel, so long as we love, everything in us is an energy we can use. He is born into a world of poverty, ignorance and injustice, but Azaro awakens with a smile on his face. Despite belonging to a spirit world made of enchantment, where there is no suffering, Azaro chooses to stay in the land of the Living: to feel it, endure it, know it and love it. This is his story.

This is a thicket of brambles as a a book- the writing is so dense with description. Okri weaves between dream and waking; between the spirit world and that of the living, where the two bleed into one another so seamlessly that it oftentimes left me reeling. Strong stuff!

TheKidUpstairs I really want to read this one, but I feel like it needs to be at a time when I can really focus on it! 6mo
Creadnorthey @TheKidUpstairs true, but at certain point I just had to let Okri‘s writing wash over me… to be honest, I feel, if anything, I became unfocused. (edited) 6mo
Dilara Happy to see that others enjoyed The Famished Road: it's one of my favourite novels! 6mo

Creadnorthey @Dilara I‘ve been carrying this book on my TBR shelf for longer then I‘ve been married (celebrating 28years this August)- didn‘t realize that other people even had this on their radar 😆 6mo
Dilara @Creadnorthey Well, it did win the Booker Prize back in 1991 😁
Happy 28th anniversary by the way!

Mehso-so

A frustrating book! Frustrating because it's like an unfinished sculpture: inside there is a true fantasy classic, where dreamy depictions of the spirit world lay aside comical satire of a community in the grip of 'progress', yet undone by greed and thirst for power. But there needs to be 100-200 pages chiseled away from neverending scenes of partying, fighting, more partying, more fighting, dragging on indefinitely.

Tamra Shoot, I have had this TBR for a long time. Might need to remove it. ✔️ Took it off shelf and onto donation it goes. (edited) 12mo
Billypar @Tamra It's a shame because there are a lot of great scenes too. It might be better enjoyed by someone who reads faster than I do, so the dull parts move more quickly. 12mo

Bailedbailed

A really tedious read. The characters were underdeveloped, the adjectives used to create the atmosphere were too many and the story, quite pointless.

The premise of this book had so much potential, but in the end, dismally fell short.

Liked this to start with but I was distracted away from it and it‘s a shame because I‘ve heard it has an amazing ending. Hard to pick up again though....

BookwormM It is an amazing book maybe another time you will manage to get into it 5y

Bailedbailed

Woah, way way too deliriously magical-realistic and dream feverish for me. Bailed early.

Vansa SAME here. I really really couldn't bring myself to finish this , I couldn't understand it all ! As you've said , there was just waaay too much magic for it to be comprehensible! 7y
Cathythoughts Hahaha had this for Bookclub last year ... a lot of bailing went on. I could not get it at all 7y

"It is more difficult to love than to die. It is not death that human beings are most afraid of, it is love. The heart is bigger than a mountain. One human life is deeper than the ocean. I received an eARC copy of The Famished Road from Open Road Integrated Media via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Beautiful & unique with a magical feel that drags in places. I appreciated it, but I didn‘t love everything about it. It's definitely a story that you need to sit & contemplate while reading & after you finish it. Definitely recommended to those who enjoy reading literature and books that require thought.

I know some people who couldn't manage 500 pages of this book. I loved it. The language, though plentiful at times is stunning and the ultimate message is utterly important!
The language makes the devastating moments in this book easier to read and absorb.
If you can't manage to read the whole thing. Read Section Three - Book Eight. It may help to convince you!

Look what arrived in the mail today via Amazon from a woman in Russia who I don't know. The first book I received as part of the Facebook book exchange, and not only have I not read it, but it looks wonderful!

ReadingEnvy I have this one on my shelf ... I started it once and really liked it but I had read so many novels from Nigeria! It really is the literary Mecca of Africa. Someday. 8y
