I loved the first half of this book. Anyone who is a fan of RENT would enjoy reading about the birth of the musical. I could‘ve done without the author‘s first sexual experiences in the middle, but I could certainly identify with some of the grief he experienced when he lost his mother. All-in-all I‘d only recommend it if you are a big fan of RENT.

#DashingDecember wrap up. How like me to read exactly one book off of my intended TBR and follow up with 6 other books 😆 So much easier to do audio with the holiday hustle and bustle than cozy up with my Kindle. Tagged book was very good but a very heavy read compared to what I‘ve been reading lately. 💔 #BookSpinBingo #WinterGames #TeamGameSleighers #Adventathon #WrapItUpReadathon 150 words for #WGWordSearch

Fun fact: my first ever purchase on a credit card was buying this book back in university.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Straight up loved what is one of the most unflinching and honest memoirs of grief, loss, musical plays and relationships, I have ever read. I absolutely loved this book and read it in 3 sittings. It would have been one, but a Tom Hiddleston play intervened ... as did a sister.

RaimeyGallant Nice review! And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. I'm fast running out of room on my signed books shelves... 😟

Because I'm bored, you all are going to be subjected to some of the more memorable ones here.

VeganCleopatra I don't think I have even one signed book. 😆 It's just really not my thing, I've never cared. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra I started young. 😂 And I have such memories attached to some of these. And for some, the author has since passed so they're extra special to me 6y
VeganCleopatra Haha I noticed! Shades of Gray was given to me growing up, not for a class, and I still haven't read it. 😆 6y

silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra Haha. I had a well-meaning aunt who thought all I should read we're classics -- but not fantasy classics. I still haven't read some of the ones she foisted on me. 6y
VeganCleopatra @silentrequiem Better than the hideous sweaters and weird randomness I got from my extended family at least. 😬😆 But isn't it funny how we can remember who gave us books that we still haven't read decades ago? 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra Oh I got plenty of awful clothing too! 😂 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra I'm going to turn into that aunt... My goddaughter got a signed book at her first birthday from me. It's probably in a box somewhere at their house. And I got her and her sister signed copies of Phoebe and Her Unicorn books when I saw the author a few months back. I hope they grow up to be readers. 6y
VeganCleopatra Going to turn into that aunt or...already that aunt? 😉 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra Oh, I'm already that aunt. Haha! Since I moved across the country from them, I make no bones about the fact I'm bribing them with gifts to make them remember me. 6y

I don‘t know how many times I saw RENT while I was living in NYC - but it was a lot. And I wasn‘t aware that Anthony Rapp had a memoir! 🙀 I started listening to this yesterday and now I can‘t stop. I love his descriptions of 1990s NYC because that will forever be “my” NYC ❤️. He also chronicles his mom‘s diagnosis with cancer. You definitely don‘t need to be a fan of RENT to be moved by this beautiful story. #seasonsoflove #musicalnewyear

Bookish_AF Oh my gosh I remember when this came out! He came to my college to do a talk/book signing. It was so cool to meet him, it‘s the only book signing I‘ve ever gotten to attend. 6y
LauraBeth @whippoorwill815 wow! That‘s a pretty great book signing to attend! 6y
vivastory I don't read memoirs very often, but I will definitely be checking this out! 6y

ErikaB He also released an album a few years ago called “Without You (A Musical Memoir)”. I haven‘t had a chance to buy the whole thing yet, but I did buy the first track, which happens to be “Losing My Religion” and I had been dying to hear his version since I found out it was his audition song all those years ago. 6y
Cinfhen I literally got goosebumps reading your description, Laura. I will be looking for this audio and I can‘t wait to hear his rendition of Losing My Religion @ErikaB 6y
ErikaB @Cinfhen There‘s also a live album called “Acoustically Speaking” performed with Adam Pascal from 2016 that‘s worth checking out, if you‘d like to hear his covers of “The Origin of Love” and “Falling Slowly”. I saw one of their concerts in 2012 and it was amazing, even if I was practically incoherent by the time I got to the signing line afterwards! (They were very sweet - I think they‘re used to somewhat emotional fans.) 6y
Cinfhen Ha, I‘m sure they are @ErikaB I think musicians really have a unique gift in their ability to reach us in such a haunting and personal way. I‘m blown away by that type of power they can produce from singing 🎶 6y
LauraBeth @ErikaB thanks - I found it on Apple Music and am now streaming it! 🙌 Have you read this memoir yet? The first chapter is titled Losing My Religion 💕 @Cinfhen this album is great so far! Although...big tears 😭 6y
Bookzombie This has been on my library wish list for a while. I‘m going to bump it up! 🙂 6y
ErikaB @LauraBeth I own the Kindle version (will have buy a hard copy if I‘m ever lucky enough to go to another concert/signing) but haven‘t read it yet. One of my general resolutions for this year is to stop saving things for “later” and actually use/read/enjoy them. Hopefully I‘ll get to it this year - I can think of at least two reading challenge prompts where this would work! 6y

So Anthony Rapp friended me on Goodreads and now I want to listen to "La Vie Boheme."

I was lucky to see RENT a couple times when Anthony and Adam Pascal returned to the show on Broadway. I also saw him in concert and his book is wonderful.

?Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes?

DebinHawaii That's cool. 👍📚 I didn't know he had a book. 8y

I was (and still am) a total Rent-head. Yes, this is a book about loss. It's a book about grief, and getting through. It's also a look inside the process of Rent, since Rapp was with the show from its early workshop performances. Riveting, moving, a must read for fans of the show.
