Other People We Married
Other People We Married | Emma Straub
10 posts | 16 read | 18 to read
The beloved debut story collection from the New York Times-bestselling author of The Vacationers. In Other People We Married, Straub creates characters as recognizable as a best friend, and follows them through moments of triumph and transformation with wit, vulnerability, and dazzling insight. In Some People Must Really Fall in Love, an assistant professor takes halting steps into the awkward world of office politics while harboring feelings for a freshman student. Two sisters struggle with old assumptions about each other as they stumble to build a new relationship in A Map of Modern Palm Springs. In Puttanesca, two widows move tentatively forward, still surrounded by ghosts and disappointments from the past. These twelve stories, filled with sharp humor, emotional acuity, and joyful language, announce the arrival of a major new talent. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The writing is sharp and clever, but most of the stories left me feeling unsatisfied.

I love Emma Straub, but I dislike short stories.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book... Some stories were great, really sharp writing and excellent job setting the tone. Others fell really short. Pick it up if you're looking for a light airy read, or better yet read her book The Vacationers instead, which I preferred.

Why I read it: #LitsyAtoZ letter O, #mountTBR

BooksForEmpathy Did you read Modern Lovers?? 8y
8little_paws @BooksForEmpathy not yet. Probably someday. I'm fairly interested but it's not super high on my list. 8y

Still on my short story kick! I just picked up Other People We Married for $1.99 on Kindle. 👍🏻👍🏻 Currently one story in to each of these collections. 📚

So, I bought this one mainly for the absolutely stunning cover. And because it was on sale one day. But I am SO happy I did!! I am almost finished and it is delightful. This is one of the nicest book surprises in a while - where I bought it on a whim and it just has been exceeding my expectations with every story. It's fun and sassy and a great addition if you liked Single, Carefree, Mellow or Barbara the Slut.
