My only thought about the rose episode is that maybe Holmes was stalling for time so that he could look around the room to see where the plans could be hidden. He couldn't go down on his knees with his magnifying glass (a la “The Speckled Band“) because people were in the room, so maybe this was his only way to have a looksie. 3mo
And, how could the side street be left UNLOCKED for anyone to come in? 3mo
