The last two books I‘ve read were written for young readers by Australian Aboriginal writers about the stolen generation which, for those not familiar with our history, involved the systematic removal of Aboriginal children from their families. This practice only ceased in the 1970s.

As we head into Australia Day, celebrated here on 26 January, I choose to share these stories with my 11 year-old. I would love to see them read more widely.

This quote from the Author‘s Note at the end of this quality young adult fiction, written by Palyku Pilbara (north Western Australia) Aboriginal writers who are siblings.

These stats are so high that “no family escaped the effects of forced removal”. 😢

Jeg I think I heard Sandra Hill say 4 generations of her family taken. And that she never let her own kids out of her sight. 4y
Freespirit I hope that this never happens again! 4y

Racing through this ebook, already a third into it after a day or so of off and on reading.
Seems it's a mystery set in Australia involving the aboriginal story telling as well as the topic of the Stolen Generation.
Easy to read and follow. Loving it so far.

MrsMalaprop I‘m reading this too 👍🏼 4y

#12BooksOf2020

My other favourite #Ozfiction for the year

thegirlwiththelibrarybag This book is brilliant! I‘m so glad a library friend absolutely gushed about reading this because left to my own devices I probably wouldn‘t have picked it up. The audio is really good as well ☺️ (I‘ve been trying to convince myself that I can focus on audiobooks so have been easing myself in with books I‘ve read before) 4y
Andrew65 Love the cover. 4y
TrishB This looks good 👍🏻 4y
MrsMalaprop I was just in a bookshop in Dunsborough WA when I saw this book. I immediately did a Litsy search & found this review, which of course led me to buy it! Thanks 🙏👏. 4y
CarolynM @MrsMalaprop 👍 I'm pretty sure you'll love it. 4y

Wow! What a powerful, lyrical YA mystery. A word of warning for this target age group it probably ought to be papered with trigger warnings!

CarolynM I loved this one too. I thought it handled some tricky subjects more delicately than I've seen elsewhere. 4y

This was a great Australian YA mystery. Beth Teller is helping her detective Dad with his new case, the thing is, Beth has died 😯 Very cleverly written. ⭐⭐⭐.5

#FirstQuarter #Booked2020 wrap up - style inspired by @JennyM

I decided to go by the seasons as they apply to me in the Southern Hemisphere and start with summer. Catching Teller Crow was the one I enjoyed most, Sophia Khan Is Not Obliged was the one I liked least.

Thanks hosts. I'll be getting on with Autumn now.

BarbaraBB I love that about the challenge, that you can follow your own seasons! Hope you are still well 💕 5y
Cinfhen Congrats on completing your first season of #Booked2020☀️♥️🎉This is your “official” entry for #FirstQuarterDrawing 🙌🏻 5y
JennyM Love it! 😘😘 5y

AceOnRoam Oh my goodness you have been busy, look at your Litfluence! How are you? Are you severely impacted by the forced closures?. Have you got enough dunny paper ??? 5y
CarolynM @AceOnRoam We're OK, but it's not good for my husband's business which also means no work for me. So long as we can still get take away coffee from our local cafe we will survive.😂 Luckily we were only about half way through our big box of Who Gives a Crap TP when the madness started. Still got plenty.👍 5y
AceOnRoam @CarolynM yeah so many businesses. I had a meltdown on Monday when I saw the marina restaurant pack up and close its doors, don't know how everyone will survive without income. 5y
AceOnRoam Was lovely chatting, thanks again for checking in on me 😍😘💕💖 5y

What an extraordinary book! So many themes of love, loss and resilience, not to mention an intriguing mystery, all in one short book. An excellent piece of YA #ozfiction

It covers both #YANovelbyaPoC and #FinishinaDay for #booked2020. Can I use it for both? Also #teenangst #authenticvoice for #BBRC

SaturnDoo Nice😊 wtg knocking out some of those challenge prompts 👏👏👏 5y
Tamra I adore that cover! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh, that‘s our one request. One book, one prompt. In most other things, we‘re pretty easy. Just not this one. Thanks. 🥰 5y

Tamra Weird and I don‘t get why publishers change titles. In Libby the book is titled, The Things She‘s Seen. Far less attractive cover too. (edited) 5y
CarolynM @Tamra I agree, I don't get the different covers in different markets. Changing titles can be really confusing, but I suppose it might be necessary where an expression might have a quite different meaning in different countries. 5y
Cinfhen Book sounds great 👍🏻 but what @BarbaraTheBibliophage ....sorry ☺️you can decided later on how you want to use the book 5y
LeeRHarry I really liked this one too! 😊 And like yourself read it in one day. (edited) 5y

A dead girl waits for her father to stop being sad. To be able to continue living and to be able to celebrate her life and not just be stuck on the fact it ended. He‘s also a police officer, called into oversee a possible murder case in a home for young offenders that had recently burnt down. They solve it together. I‘m so glad I finally read this. Even though I didn‘t exactly mean to read the whole thing on a ‘school night‘ #loveozya #ownvoices

Well that was amazing. A quick but very thought provoking and emotion packed read. Beth, her father, and Catching work to unravel a small town mystery after a children's-home fire. There is ghostiness & the impacts of invasion and colonisation & the strength of Aboriginal women and girls.

Content notes for harm to children (in traumatic dissociation/metaphor, but I'm not sure whether that makes it more or less upsetting for you), racism, grief.

Lauredhel @Liberty I wanted to especially rec this one to you- I don't know how much Australian YA usually crosses your desk but I think this might be firmly in your wheelhouse 6y
