Lawrence Durrell reminds me of my uni classmate Peter. We were assigned to partner in a group assignment, and he‘s very controlling. While reviewing our work, he read my part of the essay and looked very annoyed. “Come on, Sisilia. You can‘t use “to solve the problem” for such serious paper. Change it to… *thinking for a few minutes*… “to decipher the enigma”. You need to work on your writing skill!” 🤪

Billypar I always like to highlight my enigma-deciphering skills on my resume 😆 1y

Bailedbailed

I decided to cut my losses at p.70/877. I think Durrell worked hard to impress his readers by putting a lot of acrobatics. I appreciate good writings but this one is full of words jumbled up together and yet I was left asking “wth are you trying to say?” I posted those paragraphs that caught my attention and made me feel 🤢 My last draw was this: “..love, as a sort of masturbation, took on all the colours of neurasthenia.” Pfftt 🙅🏻‍♀️

TheSpineView Bummer! 1y
Aimeesue Totally agree. Durrell was such a show off here, and it just turned into word salad. 1y

Starting my journey with this tetralogy

Ruthiella Good luck! I‘ve read the first one. The language is a little too poetic for me, but other reading friends have loved it. 1y
sisilia @Ruthiella Not even halfway in, I find him verbose. I seriously want to kick him to just say what he wanted to say already… haha 😅 Let‘s see… 1y

The great unboxing continues. These lovelies are the 4 volumes of the Alexandria Quartet. It has been on my TBR for years.Pocket Book Cardinal editions that retailed for 50 cents.Their golden spines unbroken.Seems like they were on the previous owners TBR as well, unless they were read very gently.

Chrissyreadit They look intriguing. Looking forward to hearing what you think. 7y

I started reading Justine when I was about 20 and stopped, which was rare for me. About 10 years later, I started over and read all 4 books in a week. And it blew my little mind, big time. Such finesse! I cannot say strongly enough how amazing this quartet of books is. But they should definitely be read all together. #changedyourmindabout #feistyfeb

CarolynOliver I look for these in bookstores all the time, but I've never found a full set. It's so disappointing since I've heard how wonderful they are. 8y
ApoptyGina69 Cool. I happen to have added this to my wishlist just this week. Very slick editions you have there. 📚👍 8y

Pickpick

The Alexandria Quartet is a series of four interconnected books set in Alexandria, Egypt in the 1930s and 40s. These books are a work of art as far as atmosphere, imagery, philosophy, character and voice are concerned. The prose is incredibly gorgeous and well crafted, but they‘re not easy to read, & at times I had no idea in which direction the story was going. I both loved & hated them. A memorable experience, worth both the time & effort.
