Chise Hatori has lived a life full of neglect and abuse, devoid of anything resembling love. Far from the warmth of family, she has had her share of troubles and pitfalls. Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers, obtains her through a slave auction, Chise's life will never be the same again. The man is a "magus,"a sorcerer of great power, who decides to free Chise from the bonds of captivity. The magus then makes a bold statement: Chise will become his apprentice-and his bride!

As I keep reading, this series reminds me why I love manga.
There's a great slow burn in the pacing in the story that works here along with the hints of dark, magic, and fantasy and the characterizations of the each character slowly coming into their own as it's building up from the previous volumes.

Ah behold my messy desk. I picked up volume one of this manga at a used bookstore and I find it very interesting. I always love reading stories of magic and I love manga illustration!

I really enjoyed this. It's like a fairytale for older kids/teens and adults. It has magic, dragons, and fairies. If you love fantasy and fairy tales, then you'll love this manga.

Today was a very hard and emotionally exhausting day teaching. I treated myself to some retail therapy at Barnes and Noble after work.

Okay, I'm in love. Have you ever found a book series that fits so neatly into your aesthetic that it seems like it was written for you? This series may not be for everyone but it is absolutely for me. A soft, beautiful story with fairies and dragons and as much magic and wonder as you could want. A sort of grown up Ghibli-esque tale. Definitely would recommend.

Tsubame Ahhh, I've been eyeing this series for a while now, but I'm a bit afraid that it's rather juvenile, while I would hope for something deeper from this manga. What are your thoughts on it, considering this? 8y
Limonotte @Tsubame So, this is absolutely still a shonen series. If you're looking for something very deep or complex I don't think you'll be satisfied. That said if you like slowly unfolding character development and plays on various stories and fairytales (they even directly reference H.P. Lovecraft's Cats of Ulthar) then you might get a pleasant afternoon out of it. 8y
Limonotte Ah!! It's worth mentioning that this series starts off with some red flags. It begins with a severe power imbalance between the main character and the titular Magus. I think the relationship between the two main characters develops respectfully from that point on but if that kind of thing isn't for you then you might give it a skip. 8y
Tsubame Thanks! It's exactly the connection to other fairytales that makes me so curious and the artwork seems to be alright too, still I'm not convinced yet, but I'll keep it on my tbr. 8y

Just finished the 4th volume! It just keeps getting better! They call these gremlins! Although they weren't really explained, they apparently come into your house and tinker with all your things, breaking many of them 😄

Serotonin I've been enjoying this series 👍 8y

Finally finished reading volume 4 during our drive up to Vancouver BC 👍

I really enjoyed this volume more than the previous ones because I got to learn more about Ainsworth and Chise's past - like how Ainsworth became a mage and also a look at Chise's family before she was left alone. There was also character development - which I love because it always adds depth to a story well told. Good stuff 📚 🙌 #manga #ancientmagusbride

BekahB I've been on the fence about picking this manga series up, but I think I'll give the first volume a try. 😀 8y

I set this book on the couch so that I could finish reading it. Hours later, I returned to find it missing! I strongly believe my 2 year old hid it somewhere 🤔 I will conduct a search party tomorrow 😆#manga #ancientmagusbride #mommylife #toddler #missingbook
