The Black Pearl
The Black Pearl | Scott O'Dell
4 posts | 18 read | 3 to read
From the depths of a cave in the Vermilion Sea, Ramon Salazar has wrested a black pearl so lustrous and captivating that his father, an expert pearl dealer, is certain Ramon has found the legendary Pearl of Heaven. Such a treasure is sure to bring great joy to the villagers of their tiny coastal town, and even greater renown to the Salazar name. No diver, not even the swaggering Gaspar Ruiz, has ever found a pearl like this! But is there a price to pay for a prize so great? When a terrible tragedy strikes the village, old Luzons warning about El Diablo returns to haunt Ramon. If El Diablo actually exists, it will take all Ramons courage to face the winged creature waiting for him offshore.

Pickpick

This was required summer reading for my 6th grader. It's from the author of the Island of the Blue Dolphin. The book was easily finished in one day. I read it to my child, who said the beginning was boring but then it got interesting.? It was first written in 1967, so the descriptions of women and "Indians" were off-putting to me, so I made sure to point that out. Otherwise, it was an easily read bit of adventure. My kid rates it a pick. #kidlit

WarpedSweetness I remember reading this in school and enjoying it. I still really like Island of the Blue Dolphin. 7y
AmandaL @WarpedSweetness This was my first book by the author. I was only familiar with him because my mom used to teach Dolphin to her middle school students. I may pick it up now. 😊 7y
