so-soI am probably in a good place to give a so-so rating because I do typically enjoy Palahniuk‘s work. This one, while a lot of fun at first, petered out for me. I‘m not sure where he lost me, but he did. And that‘s okay. You can‘t win them all. A 13-year-old girl is poised take over Hell. I was unaware this was a series when I picked it up, so I‘ll hold off Judgement Day until I finish it. Maybe it‘ll all tie up nicely?

bailedThe lack of an overarching plot, the repetitive “Are you there Satan” (a la Judy Blume‘s Margaret), the weird obsession with The Breakfast Club and the attempt to create a damned version in hell, and a 13yo female MC who sounds more like a middle aged white man attempting to imagine what a 13yo girl might sound like all did me in. DFN at 25%.
Time for some Palahniuk. He‘s always good for a horrified laugh.

When I was younger, a Sunday school teacher used to always tell us to be good little boys and girls or we'd end up "down there" which is what I first thought of with this prompt. I'm still not sure why she didn't just use the word Hell.
I actually enjoyed this book when I read it, so if you want to take a literary trip "down there" give it a read. ?

bailedI tried. However I spent a week trying to advance a single chapter and at some point you have to tap out. This clearly wasn‘t a book for me, which is unfortunate since it started great but just ended up boring me. I did buy this one though so there‘s a good chance I might pick it up again one day.

pickI loved this book. It was definitely out of sorts from what I normally read. I would have to describe it as light and funny, yet it addressed important modern issues from the perspective of an above average intelligence teenager.

*The lyrics to this song always make me think of Palahniuk‘s novel “Damned.” There‘s Maddie, the 13-year-old telemarketer, calling from Hell, surveying the old and infirm. But—what lo—they fall in love with our Maddie, which prompts them to cash in their chips ahead of their expiration dates so they can join her army in Hell, confronting such baddies as Hitler, Vlad the Impaler, Catherine de Medici, etc.
I DNF'd this tale narrated by a 13-year-old girl who ends up in Hell. Interesting idea, but I hated the execution of this #highwaytohell.

This was a #DNF for me. I tried to read this a few years ago and I'm not even going to try to find an excuse for bailing. Ugh. I've enjoyed a few Palahniuk novels but this just was a big "no" from me.

panUnreadable. I feel as interesting as the plot is the execution of this was horrible. I can't imagine anyone enjoying this. Nothing to do with the writing style either because I loved Choke by him. This was scattered, repetitive and seemed like something he puked up to meet his deadline. I'm shocked this was even published.
True, Jane Eyre is an eternal, ageless character, but no matter how many times you read that damned book, she always gets married to gross, burn-victim Rochester. Reread that Bronte book all you want but Jane Eyre‘s never going to get gender reassignment surgery or train to become a kickass ninja assassin. And it‘s pathetic she believes she‘s real. Jane‘s just ink stamped on a page, but she really, truly thinks she‘s a living-alive person.

It's a little cheesy but I found it entertaining. It's first in a proposed trilogy but I didn't enjoy it enough to seek out the others.

pan🎧 Palahniuk skewers lest coast liberalism and its inherent hypocrisy in this satire featuring a 13-yo who dies after smoking too much mj and finds herself in Hell. While by no means family-friendly listening, there‘s not much of the author‘s trademark shock content and there are some tiresome and repetitive word/phrase usages. Audiobook narrator sounds like a 13-yo, but mispronunciations and awkward delivery “damn” this production.
🎧 Pulling this backlist title from my TBL queue and starting it tonight! I‘m prepared for rough/crude scenes and satirical humor in this story about a 13-yo who dies and goes to hell. So yeah, just your standard run-of-the-mill Palahniuk 😜

pickThis was a fun book. I think a lot of people didn‘t like it because it was so heavy in the satire genre, more so than any of his other books. He makes reference to Johnathan Swift who is one of the great writers of satire in this and it makes it evident of how the sarcasm is supposed to be heavy to make its point, similar to Swift‘s “A Modest Proposal”. Definitely over the top, but it wouldn‘t be Palahniuk if it weren‘t.
pickI have been a long time fan of Chuck Palahniuk. Some of his earlier books are among my all-time favorites(Survivor, Diary, Invisible Monsters, Choke, Lullaby). He lost me somewhere around Haunted and Pygmy. This audiobook was available from the library this week so I gave it a shot. It wasn't as great as his earlier stuff, but I enjoyed it and look forward to the sequel!

Damned is the first in what was supposed to be a trilogy, but I'm not sure if the 3rd book is ever coming out.

This book was a hell of a read (pun intended)!
I enjoyed the character development. Some people might not like how the main character is 13 years old, but I think it's okay.
There is a Breakfast Club type thing going on, but it's only surrounding the main character and nothing like what we know as the Breakfast Club.
I LOVED Chuck's version of how Hell is and how you can be "Damned" to it!

Something before I write my review on this book.
Some advice, don't read the summary of what the story is about. You will be disappointed if you go into reading this if you think it's just like the breakfast club, but in Hell. I'll spoil it for you; it's not.
It is a crude book, so it might not be for everyone.
Also at chapter 28 page 184, things escalate quickly!
This booking isn't what I was expecting, but I want to know how this will end!

Interesting view on Hell!
Candy and sweets are currency and there's an ocean of sperm, bugs, and hills of clipped toenails/ fingernails!
My brother recommended this book to me.
He says it's basically like the Breakfast Club but in Hell.
He also says it's funny, so I guess I'll see if this book can turn my mood around from the previous horrid book I read!
