Race to the Sun
Race to the Sun | Rebecca Roanhorse
35 posts | 28 read | 29 to read
Lately, seventh grader Nizhoni Begay has been able to detect monsters, like that man in the fancy suit who was in the bleachers at her basketball game. Turns out he's Mr. Charles, her dad's new boss at the oil and gas company, and he's alarmingly interested in Nizhoni and her brother, Mac, their Navajo heritage, and the legend of the Hero Twins. Nizhoni knows he's a threat, but her father won't believe her. When Dad disappears the next day, leaving behind a message that says "Run!", the siblings and Nizhoni's best friend, Davery, are thrust into a rescue mission that can only be accomplished with the help of Din Holy People, all disguised as quirky characters. Their aid will come at a price: the kids must pass a series of trials in which it seems like nature itself is out to kill them. If Nizhoni, Mac, and Davery can reach the House of the Sun, they will be outfitted with what they need to defeat the ancient monsters Mr. Charles has unleashed. But it will take more than weapons for Nizhoni to become the hero she was destined to be . . . Timeless themes such as the importance of family and respect for the land resonate in this funny, fast-paced, and exciting quest adventure set in the American Southwest.

2.75⭐ While there is much to be admired in this book, it was just okay for me. I loved how it utilized Navajo myths and culture, and the adventure itself had a fun, traditional-folktale-in-modern-times feel. However, it just didn't quite hit home for me. I enjoyed it enough to find out how it ended but not enough to be invested in the story. I think this primarily comes from the internal monologue of the MC and some of the dialogue.👇

Nelnjali I enjoy snarky humor, but the "ha-ha, I'm a quirky preteen that is totally concerned about these monsters trying to destroy the world, but also, aren't little brothers annoying?" attitude just didn't mesh. I think middle school children are quite capable of understanding big emotions, and at times, this book seemed to have things forced in to be more "relatable" but it actually seemed out of place and maybe even a little insulting to preteens. ? 2y
Nelnjali I can definitely see why this story is loved and that kids might love it, but I think it had so much more potential that didn't get fully realized. That said, I am curious to read her writing for adults because the mythology and fantasy elements were quite fascinating. 2y

Absolutely brilliant. Another for any #riordan fans- Rebecca Roanhorse expertly introduces Diné ideas and holy people through an engaging fictional setting. My favourite part is the regular use of Navajo words, with a pronunciation glossary in the back.
What a find!

The book is a interesting take on the fantasy genre and shines a light on mythology that is almost never talked about . I love how you almost know as much as the character as the story progresses and that there aren't many dull moments.
so yea that's why i recommend Race to the Sun

It's a middle-grades book about a middle-grades monster hunter, based on Navajo folklore. It's fun, and knows its audience.

What a fun quest story surrounding Navajo mythology. I enjoyed the characters' relationships and the magical animals. My only complaint is that the plot felt rushed at times. The story wrapped up nicely, which is kind of confusing because I had heard that there is an intended sequel
Read for #tropeicalreadathon for the #absentparents prompt
Also read for #royalreadathon for the #Chip prompt (middle grade)

My first of the Rick Riordan Presents was a hit! Which also makes me eager to dive into Roanhorse‘s Trail of Lightning, which has been on my shelves for way too long.

Nizhoni struggles with some school and home issues, and now she‘s seeing monsters. And is supposed to slay them. Surprise! Good buddy adventure.

First completion for #MarvellousMarch @Andrew65

ravenlee Whoops - forgot this was also for #MGMarch @megnews 4y

Uh-oh. I‘m getting an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade vibe here. Is the magical horned toad an ally - or an enemy?

I liked this book. It had a good plot and stuff, but I‘m getting tired of the whole mom-is-missing-need-to-go-on-a-quest-to-find-her thing. It seems to be in every book I pick up lately. But other that that it was good.

LibrarianRyan @Oldschool_millenial unlike some authors imprints (Patterson I‘m looking at you) there has not been a dud for RR Presentsthis was excellent. The only series I have not read at least one book from yet is Dragon Pearl, AruSha, and the Storm runner. But all others are excellent. Highly recommend. 4y

@LapReader I wish I‘d slept well but we had lashing wind & rain all night long. This is my quarantine buddy, Bunny. Today is the one year anniversary of the day she got hit by a car & came thru completely unscathed. That day she learned not to run out the front door, she learned her name, & she learned that we‘re invested in keeping her safe & healthy. She learned a tiny bit of caution. This is a lesson for all of us now. #isolationinteractions

My first DNF of 2020. I just couldn't get into this book. The writing felt so juvenile and basic that I quickly lost interest. I know this book is a middle-grade novel but I have read a number of middle-grade novels that have a much higher standard of writing. So disappointed that this book wasn't for me, it has a very interesting premise.

Another winning book from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. This one is inspired by Navajo culture, history & tradition & tells the story of Nizhoni Begay, seventh-grader & monsterslayer. When a monster shows up in town & kidnaps their father, it‘s up to Nizhoni, her brother Mac & best friend Davery to save him. Danger, adventure, friendship, & sacrifice bring the story to life & it‘s a race against time to save the day. A great MG read.

This was an amazing read. I loved reading about how Nizhoni grew. The four trials-and how they helped her grow-are great metaphors everyone can relate to. I had to stop reading it and absorb them, myself. The sibling protectiveness was what struck me; I too, would do anything for my family. Only complaint is the big battle was done quickly. But that‘s nothing compared to the incredible writing about the Navajo culture and stories. #RiordanPresents

I literally spend my days trying to find books for unserved Indigenous communities AND OH MY GOD THERE IS LIKE NOTHING OUT THERE! Now I don't live anywhere near a Navajo territory but having a book I can take to the communities I do serve with a power-wielding bad-ass Indigenous girl fighting against some evil dude trying to destroy the environment...is amazing! She's incredibly relatable and I love her family's backstory. Praise this imprint!

SassenachTheBookWizard Getting Indigenous own voices stories that are not residential school stories from a big publisher is still basically non-existent. 5y
Nebklvr I just heard about this book. Love her other books. Can‘t wait to read this one. 5y
Bookish_Gal I‘m in the middle of her story now and I love it!! Hearing the stories from those underrepresented cultures is so SO important. I am so glad this book exists 5y
SassenachTheBookWizard @Bookish_Gal I got 🤞🤞 that Rick's Imprint will do more Indigenous cultures. 5y

My name is Nizhoni Begay, (nih-JHOH-NIH) and I can see monsters. In fact, I‘m looking at one tight now. The monster is a pale man with thin blond hair, slightly bulging eyes, and unusually red lips. He‘s tall and skinny, and he has a black suit and tie. #RiordanPresents

I can not wait to read this. I have yet to read a bad book from Rick Riordian's imprint. I am so glad they take their time to pic greet books, not just books that will make money. This one is based on Navajo myths. It can not get her soon enough.
