At Bletchley today - imagining Alan Turin walking through these gates every day to work on cracking the Enigma machine codes.

Mitch Going straight home to watch the Imitation Game! 5y
Soubhiville I loved that movie 💜 5y
Mitch @Soubhiville it was so good re watching it tonight knowing I‘d stood in those rooms not 2 hours earlier. 5y

“Atheist, homosexual, eccentric, marathon-running English mathematician, A. M. Turing was in large part responsible not only for the concept of computers, incisive theorems about their powers, and a clear vision of the possibility of computer minds, but also for the cracking of German ciphers during the Second World War.”

#TBRtemptation post! Did anyone see "The Enigma" movie? Well, here's the book that inspired it ???! And, of course, I'll start taking bets as to whether the book is better or the film ?. I'm j/k. This is a really thick selection though! Probably moves along swiftly enough aside from parts explaining ciphering & coding and such. I still regularly hear people talking about this. It's added to my TBR now ???! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Moray_Reads I have it on my Kindle, unread as yet... 8y
Rachael_reads I saw the movie...it was really good! 8y
Biblionerd I checked it out from the library right after I saw the (amazing) movie but didn't get around to reading it before I had to take it back. I'll give it another shot! 8y

Meg858 I loved the book. Mentions of coding went over my head at times. In this particular case I think the movie and book are a tie. 8y
Cortg The movie was great! We were just talking about the Enigma machine last night. You can pay money to see one behind glass at the Spy museum in DC or you can visit the free Cryptology Museum at NSA in MD and actually play around with one! 8y
RebeccasReading I loved the movie- Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent as usual. Hope the book is just as good! 8y
vivastory There's a Spy museum in DC? That's incredible. 8y
MrBook @Moray_Reads A 2017 read, perhaps 😎👍🏻? @Rachael_reads I haven't seen it yet, but I will 😊👍🏻! @Biblionerd That happens to you too 😂👏🏻?! #KindredSpirits 🙌🏻! @Meg858 Ooh, a tie! Nice 😁👍🏻! @Cortg See, I knew you talked about it, so I figured... 😳😂👏🏻! @Writergal Me too 😊👍🏻! Some are saying it is ☺! @vivastory 😁👏🏻! Yeah, I didn't spy it last time I was in DC, but it's lurking in shadows somewhere there 🙌🏻😉👍🏻. 8y
mom2bugnbee This went on my TBR after watching "The Imitation Game". I was embarrassed that I didn't know about that slice of history. #BlameBenedict #Cumberbatched 8y
CouronneDhiver The film was incredible, so I imagine that the book will be even better. Enjoy! (Ps - @mom2bugnbee Love the hashtag! 😂) 8y
LibrarianToujours We just watched The Imitation Game last night! 8y
mom2bugnbee @CouronneDhiver BC fans are often called "Cumberbitches", but my 14yo adores him & I was NOT okay with that moniker for her, so I came up w/"Cumberbatched". And I #BlameBenedict for my new-found love of audiobooks. I could listen to that man read the phone book. 8y
minkyb @mom2bugnbee that is just hysterical. Cumberbatched is awesome! 8y
Cortg @vivastory There is a Spy Museum in DC and it's kinda awesome! It's not run by Smithsonian so they charge an entry fee, but it's well worth it. 8y
vivastory @cortg @MrBook When I make it there, I will definitely check it out. That's really cool. 8y
Moray_Reads @MrBook My goal is to read as least one non-fiction a month so this could definitely be one of them 8y
Hooked_on_books Damn you @MrBook ! I really liked this movie but didn't know it was a book. Now I'm going to have to add it to TBR mountain. 8y
MrBook @mom2bugnbee Never be embarrassed, history is a massive subject 😊. @CouronneDhiver 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. @NHLibrarian That's amazing 😁👍🏻! Did you like it? @vivastory 😊🙌🏻! @Moray_Reads WOOHOO! Seems like it would be one of those absorbing books that could be gotten through easily 😊👍🏻. @Hooked_on_books 😂👏🏻 My job here is done 😎👌🏻! 8y
Zelma There is also a graphic novel of The Imitation Game. 👍 8y
LibrarianToujours @MrBook Love it! We saw it in the theaters and were rewatching. I'm always amazed at his intelligence and sad at his treatment by his government after what he did for them. 8y
Gissy Concur with @NHLibrarian! 8y
LitDrivenGirl I watched the movie yesterday for the first time and it definitely made me want to read more about Alan. I think I'll add this to my tbr too 😊. 8y

Very interesting book, well written, entertaining and not too technical.

For, of course, the body is a machine. It is a vastly complex machine, many, many times more complicated than any machine ever made with hands; but still after all a machine.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've been meaning to read this one every since I saw the movie. 8y
XxCaptainLoreleixX Such a good movie! I'm still in the beginning and it's a bit slow but I'm gonna keep on going :) 8y

Alan Turing was a remarkable man who was leaps and bounds ahead of his time, and Hodges is able to capture his story in a beautiful and moving way. This is one of the best and most detailed biographies I've ever read.
