This story involves the main 13-year-old character Sal, who is on a road trip from Ohio to Idaho with her grandparents to see her mother. A poignant read.
Newbery winner Sharon Creech tells a story of 13 yo-Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of the "Indian-ness in her blood," who travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom.

Walk Two Moons is not a book I would have ever thought would be banned or challenged but this past year it has been on the receiving end of a lot of negative attention. It's been challenged and banned in various places due to 'distressing topics for young people' such as childbirth and women screaming in labor. 🙄 *rolls eyes*
I love a book that takes me on a road trip.
I love stories that portray children navigating their way as the adults around them stumble through grown-up problems, and this novel does that skillfully. My son and I read this aloud to one another, and we both enjoyed the layers and layers of stories (except for the romance, which my son says is dumb because the boy is a creep and not a "romantic guy"). Read as part of the Build Your Library homeschool curriculum, level 7.
I ❤️ that my 12.5-year-old still likes reading aloud with me. We trade off reading each chapter.
1. Sometimes seeing an article about a book being recently challenged or removed from curriculum puts it on my radar - in that sense, it does make me more likely to read it.
2. My older sister once made me stop reading L'Engle's A Wind in the Door because she said it was “New Age.“ If I wanted a book I thought my parents would disapprove of, I'd casually hide it in the middle of my library stack. Worked like a charm.

My all time favorite book; it‘s sad, funny, folksy, and a really well-spun yarn.
This is two stories. Sal tells her grandparents the story of Phoebe and her mother while on a road trip to see Sal‘s mother. We listened to it in the car and there was not a dry eye by the end but we all loved it.
Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared. This novel is a wonderful adventure, especially bc Sal & grandparents stop in my MN hometown.

Starting my first read for #SuperSeptember readathon. It's a childhood favorite. And with everything going on in the world and here in California, I needed a comfort read.
I liked this book way more than I thought I was going to after reading the first chapter. I was crying so much through the second half. Very sweet story. I loved the characters and lessons through the book.
✨I enjoyed it a bit while I was walking my pup around the yard before bed 🌝
✨Cooler weather coming soon, school starting, learning new things and spending time with family
✨Right now... boring things for work, but the tagged book recreationally, The Secret World of Og to my kids, nonfiction In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and audiobook The Life and Times of Frederick Douglas... enjoying them all! 📚📚📖📖

As a former Wisconsinite, I love this description of Madison.
Sal and her father leave their farm after Sal's mother leaves them. She finds a friend, Phoebe, who is totally opposite of her but goes through a similar situation. Wonderful lessons about family and not judging people before you know anything about them. So many layers in this book and beautiful characters and I cried myself to sleep last night when I finished it!!
I liked Mary Stuart Masterson as the narrator of this story. 2.5 ⭐
Salamanca goes on a journey across across the Northern United States to Idaho to bring back her mom, along the way, she tells the story of Phoebe and the lunatic.
This was another one of my favorite books when I was younger, this book has survived my many moves across the United States.

1. Continue with my bookshelf challenge that I have given myself. I may join another challenge but I haven't gotten up the nerve yet.
2. I read with water all the time. 🤣 My husband and I love topo chico (mineral water) and drink it by the caseload.

I would use this book to teach my classroom about empathy and the meaning of friendship.
This book has many great lessons for children to learn! The relationships presented and conveyed give children an insight to the importance of them. This story of a girl traveling across the country with her grandparents and telling her life events can be an open door for children to not feel alone.
Realistic Fiction Newbery Award winner Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech is a great IR or LC. This book is about a little girls who's mom left and she is trying to reunite with her. On a long journey with her grandparents to see her mother again lots happens and many stories are told. #UCFLAE3414F19
At @ljuliel 's suggestion:
One of the first (longer) books that really touched me was the tagged book, my 7th-grade reading. Not clear why it did. I had hair down to my waist, like Salamenca, and she also sees the world a little differently. I think it was mainly the theme of not judging others until you know them better
I really want to pick this book up again

“Don‘t judge a Man until you‘ve walked two moons in his moccasins” this RF by Sharon Creech has won a Newbery Medal. This book had many great life lessons and relatable content. Sal is on a road trip with Gram and Gramps, and she tells them a story about her friend Phoebe. This story talks about how Phoebe‘s mom left the family and it results In the story of what happened to Sals mom when she left the family. #UCFLAE3414SU19
On a cross country road trip with her grandparents, Sal must face the truth of the mother who left her to “go out west”. She begins to accept the part of her that is just a 13-year old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother

This may not be the cover you remember, but let me just tell you... the beautiful writing and memorable characters in Walk Two Moons will bring you right back to your childhood, when it was the cool book in the library that all the bookworm kids wanted to get their hands on (in my school, at least!). In Episode 52 of my podcast, we discuss this Newbery Medal winner and the ways in which it tackles big issues! Link to listen in bio! 🎧
Oh, no—I read the wrong book! When I came across/bailed on another of Creech's books last week, I thought I remembered *loving* one of her books that I had read with one of my boys. I searched our book logs, and thought it was Walk Two Moons. Nope. It was Hope Was Here, by Joan Bauer. Back to WTM: I *did* read this with Number One Son many moons ago. I can only assume that I was just as bored with it then, and that I quickly put it out of my mind.
More childhood favorites! I loved all books by Sharon Creech and adored the Julie of the Wolves series!
Newbery award winner "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech is an F book that would be perfect for an LC. The story revolves around Salamanca and her family as they take a road trip across the country. As Salamanca tells her family a story to pass the time in the car, truths about her own life start to unravel as well. Sharon Creech was my favorite author growing up and this was one of her best books, in my opionion. #LAE3414sp19

I knew how this book was going to end within the first few pages, but I still bawled like a baby when I finished it. All of the characters in this book are fascinating and the ways they interact with each are so real, you can't help but want to learn more about them. If I ever teach middle grade English, I'll definitely incorporate this book into my lesson plans.
Salamanca Tree Hiddle, a 13 year old with Native American roots, travels cross country with her grandparents. An important part of the journey is in southwest Minnesota, where American Indian tribe members quarry the soft red stone (catlinite) from which peace pipes, jewelry etc are made. This where I grew up. #settingyouvebeento #riotgrams @bookriot

Walk Two Moons was my absolute favorite book growing up (and in a lot of ways, even now that I‘m older). It really gifted me my love for storytelling and eccentric characters. This book is funny, complex, heart melting, and it has truths that will stick with you long after you‘ve finished it. I would highly recommend! Huzza, huzza.
