Sarah Churchill Duchess of Marlborough
Sarah Churchill Duchess of Marlborough: The Queen's Favourite | Ophelia Field
16 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
A brilliant new biographer presents an unforgettable portrait of Sarah Churchill, first Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744), the glamorous and controversial founder of the Spencer-Churchill dynasty that produced both Winston Churchill and Lady Diana Spencer. Tied to Queen Anne by an intimate friendship, Sarah hoped to wield power equal to that of a government minister. When their relationship soured, she blackmailed Anne with letters revealing their intimacy, and accused her of perverting the course of national affairs by keeping lesbian favourites. Her spectacular arguments with the Queen, with the architects and workmen at Blenheim Palace, and with her own family made Sarah famous for her temper. Attacked for traits that might have been applauded in a man, Sarah was also capable of inspiring intense love and loyalty, deeply committed to her principles and to living what she believed to be a virtuous life. Sarah was a compulsive and compelling writer, narrating the major events of her day, with herself often at center stage. This biography brings her own voice, passionate and intelligent, back to life, and casts a critical eye over images of the Duchess handed down through art, history, and literature. Here is an unforgettable portrait of a woman who cared intensely about how we would remember her.

I read a lot of amazing books this year...and I am hoping to finish a couple more before we flip the calendar to 2021. Here are my #20in2020. I probably could have added ten more amazing books to this list. So hard to decide. Full reviews are available at my blog theludicreader.com

Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, was as glamorous as she was controversial. Politically influential and independently powerful, she was an intimate, and then a blackmailer of Queen Anne.

Klou I really need to watch this movie, and read this book. Sounds so interesting 4y

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 Fantastic week & you crushed your book goal! 🎉 5y
jenniferw88 @wanderinglynn I'm not going to set a new book goal, just going to see where I end up. Part of the reason I smashed it was because I was on holiday, now I'm back home I'm not going to have as much time to read. 5y

Favourites from the first half of 2019...a surprising amount of backlist!

Slightly less thrilling are the curlews that spend the night wailing back and forth at each other - it started off as a single bird, however it‘s now found a friend. 😑

I saw the movie yesterday. Who new some much happened in the royal circles? I loved this movie, the only thing is that the ending came a little sudden to me. This could also be because I was into to story.

Now I want to read the book.

(Picture from google. This seems to be the poster for the movie)

Birdsong28 If you are in the UK the Kindle book that you tagged is only £1.99! 6y
AnneCecilie @Birdsong28 Thanks for tip, but I‘m neither in the U.K. or own a kindle 6y
Moray_Reads I liked so many things about the film but I found the score physically painful in parts, I almost had to leave at one point! 6y

AnneCecilie @Moray_Reads I didn‘t think much about the music. I was probably too involved in the story to notice 6y
charl08 Not a fan of the one note cello bit either. 6y
AnneCecilie @charl08 Where in the movie was this? 6y
charl08 I can't find it on the soundtrack album, but it is on the trailer about 2 mins in. https://youtu.be/SYb-wkehT1g 6y

Oryx Let us know what you think. I'm debating going to see this one too 6y
shaynarae @Mitch @Oryx I saw this last week and really enjoyed it! It was a bit too dark and intense for me to laugh at, but I would recommend it nonetheless. 6y
