One sultry summer in the 1980s, a teenager arrived in the wealthy town of Opal Beach to start her life anewto achieve her destiny. But before the summer was up, she vanished. Decades later, when Allison Simpson is offered the opportunity to house-sit in Opal Beach, it seems like the perfect chance to regroup and start fresh after a messy divorce. Its the off-season, after all, which means peace and quiet on the Jersey Shore, and more important for Allison, safety. But when Allison becomes drawn into the story of a girl who disappeared from town thirty years before, she begins to realize that Opal Beach isnt as idyllic as it seems. The walls of the gorgeous homes hide dark secrets. And as Allison digs deeper into the mystery, she uncovers not only the shocking truth, but finds herself caught in the middle of a twisted plot. Part electric coming-of-age story and part breathtaking mystery, One Night Gone is an atmospheric, suspenseful novel about power, privilege and, ultimately, sisterhood.

Author Tara Laskowski was the moderator of the Ashley Winstead and Julia Bartz panel yesterday at Gaithersburg Book Festival! I have two of her books but haven‘t read them yet. So exciting to see these authors in person! This is them prepping for the panel. Local author Angie Kim was the introducer for them.

1. Really enjoyed this one!

2. Psychological thriller for sure!

3. Would you believe I‘ve never read any of Stephen King‘s novels?! 😬

#SundayFunday

SheReadsAndWrites Yes! I believe it. Because I haven't either. 😬 I love his books in writing. He's just so brilliant. But I am a HUGE scaredy cat. I know I couldn't read his stuff. I've been told that Under The Dome is a good one of his that isn't too scary. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Book *on* writing 4y
HappilyEverKrafter @SheReadsAndWrites I‘ve read On Writing and also his teleplay called Sorry, Right Number but never his novels! Thanks for suggesting that one! I‘ll have to check it out! 4y
BookmarkTavern Another here that hasn‘t read any King. My sister despairs of me! 😂 Thank you for sharing! 4y

This one was an impulse pick up at the library this week; the cover endorsement by Tana French was enough to hook me! I hope it‘s good!

Between a Pick and a So-So.
I didn't understand what motivated Allison to look into the disappearance of the missing girl in the first place...was it a ghostly presence or was it more like subliminal messages? Otherwise a mostly decent mystery with a message some woman may need to hear...don't let a man make you feel like you're disposable.

ONE NIGHT GONE 📚 The reader is allowed a glimpse into Maureen's life during the summer before her disappearance, as well as Allison's attempts to pick up the pieces of her life. Then things get increasingly unsettling. What I really like about Tara Laskowski's writing is that she could make the most mundane things seem like a creepy foreshadowing of danger to come.

Lovely language and rising tension. You can tell that the author writes flash fiction, in which every word matters so much! #vivid #characterization #strongverbs

Believe it or not, we're more than two-thirds of the way through #read99women! Today's rec comes from E.A. Aymar, who calls the tagged novel "a taut, character-driven read, the kind of book that begs to be read slowly." More on the blog: http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/3/29/read99women-ea-aymar

Mehso-so

I was excited about this book because three of my favorite authors blurbed it as being basically fantastic. But, it was a bit of a turkey for me. I think the setting, a beach town in fall/winter, could have been used more effectively. I also didn‘t feel that invested in the 1980s MC, which I think is because she was written in third person POV, instead of first person like the current-day MC. It wasn‘t great. It wasn‘t terrible. Just meh.

Karisa Sorry the book was meh, but that is the cutest turkey ever! 5y
Kshakal That turkey is adorable!! 5y

Librariana I have the same turkey!! I call him Turkey Potter or Harry Gobbler, depends on my mood 😝 5y

Most everyone else is giving this good to really good reviews. I'm clearly in the minority so I hope this doesn't discourage everyone. I don't think this was poorly written, just the story was kind of TV movie for me. It didn't really add anything to the genre, nor detract. It was just kind of there.

"When Dolores's team- the Manchester County Vixens - was announced, the cheers were deafening, echoing off the gymnasium walls. Derby names were a big thing - all the women had them stenciled on the back of their jerseys. Dolores was called Spine Cracker. "She has her master's in library science. Get it?" Tammy said. "
