Time After Time: A Novel | Lisa Grunwald
51 posts | 39 read | 66 to read
"On a clear December morning in 1937, at the famous gold clock in Grand Central Terminal, Joe Reynolds, a hardworking railroad man from Queens, meets a vibrant young woman who seems mysteriously out of place. Nora Lansing is a Manhattan socialite whose flapper clothing, pearl earrings, and talk of the Roaring Twenties don't seem to match the bleak mood of Depression-era New York. Captivated by Nora from her first electric touch, Joe despairs when he tries to walk her home and she disappears. Finding her again--and again--will become the focus of his love and his life. Nora, an aspiring artist and fiercely independent, is shocked to find she's somehow been trapped, her presence in the terminal governed by rules she cannot fathom. It isn't until she meets Joe that she begins to understand the effect that time is having on her, and the possible connections to the workings of Grand Central and the astrological phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge. As thousands of visitors pass under the famous celestial blue ceiling each day, Joe and Nora create a life unlike any they could have imagined. With infinite love in a finite space, they take full advantage of the "Terminal City" within a city, dining at the Oyster Bar, visiting the Whispering Gallery, and making a home at the Biltmore Hotel. But when the construction of another historic landmark threatens their future, Nora and Joe are forced to test the limits of freedom and love. Delving into Grand Central's rich past, Lisa Grunwald crafts a masterful historical novel about a love affair that defies age, class, place, and even time"--

This is the story of Joe and Nora and the life they try to build together even though Nora‘s ghostly existence relies heavily on the phenomenon of Manhattanhedge in Grand Central Station. The middle drags a bit and it‘s not exactly the epic love story it is billed as but a fascinating premise worth the read. I was thinking tonight about how no one in the world has ever read the exact same list of books as you have. Your “read” pile is uniquely yours. It‘s the set of books that has specifically shaped you — only you. Your “read” pile is as unique as your fingerprint. It‘s a list of characters, titles, authors, and quotes that have built who you are. It‘s a beautiful thing, isn‘t it?

“The past and present ceased to exist, or rather, each of them pulled at her. But she wasn‘t able to turn back, and she wasn‘t able to go forward.”

Joe meets Nora in Grand Central Terminal and notices something‘s a little different about her. She‘s not exactly a ghost but she‘s not alive either. Together they figure out the secrets keeping her where she is. I loved the descriptions of GCT. Another free spot for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Loved this book. I am on a roll with good books. Joe falls in love with Nora after they meet in NYC at Grand Central Station. Something is a little weird about Nora, Joe figures it out and this love story is a good one filled with great facts about GSC. I need to go back to NYC on Dec. 6 or June 6th!:).

This book is right up my reading alley - historical setting, magical realism/time-travel, relationship, etc., and I enjoyed it. Grunwald made some interesting choices with the premise which I have mixed feelings about. The pacing, especially in the last quarter of the book, felt off, leaving me a little unsatisfied. Yet, the authors admonition to her daughter that “not all love stories end the same way” really resonated.

A love story that works outside the normal constraints of time and death. I really enjoyed the writing and the story, especially because it reminded me of one of my favorites, The Time Traveler's Wife.
Unfortunately, the storyline doesn't maintain its momentum. The ending is not a crowd pleaser. All that being said, it was well-written and had unique alterations to typical storylines. I will look into the author's other books.

Nora dies in an accident in 1925. After that she magically flickers back to life in NYC and is seen by Joe, a station worker. I adored the descriptions of Grand Central station. It was absolutely a main character within the novel. The plot had some strengths and weakness and lags in the middle, but the historical detail is excellent. There‘s a whole world within the station and the author brought it to life beautifully.

Admittedly, I‘m not generally a fan of historical fiction—rarely, I find one particularly well done; mostly I‘d rather read the actual history & save myself the forced & feeble fictional story line. The premise of this one was intriguing to me, so I tried valiantly to like it. From the outset, the story was very familiar—it‘s been done (better) in other books. As I plodded on, I found Joe and Nora less and less appealing. [bailed at 53% / 6:35:56]

Finally finished! I enjoyed the descriptions of- and secrets about- Grand Central Station more than I did the story of Nora and Joe. Their situation was very intriguing but I never really warmed up to either of them. I kept reading as I was interested in knowing how they managed the situation they were in. I liked the decision they made at the end but I'd have liked a lot more detail than we got in the last chapter.

When I first starting hearing about Time After Time, I have to say I was a little hesitant about reading this especially when compared to The Time Traveler's Wife because I loved that book so much. However, after receiving and ARC and then finding it on Modern Mrs. Darcy's Summer Reading Guide I said I am going to give this a shot.

I love this book but it is so hard to classify what kind of book it is. It‘s definitely a love story. I have seen it listed as “time travel“ but I don‘t think that description fits since it is more about someone stuck in time. I‘ve also seen it described as “science fiction“ which totally boggles my mind because I don‘t think there is any way it can be called that. But, whatever you want to call it, it‘s a great story with a great ending.

Lisa Grunwald's Time After Time is a lovely, gentle romance. (Thanks to Sara for the loan!) It's not the people in the novel who create conflict--each is empathetic to the extreme--it's the circumstances. Joe Reynolds works in Grand Central Station, a solid, faithful employee, brother, and son. On December 5, 1937, he glimpses Nora Lansing and feels an instant connection when they meet. And then she disappears. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod What ensues is a love story divided by time, death, and war. Grunwald has crafted here a historical novel that deals with the importance of love in the face of the rest of one's life. I found these characters to be so believable, so real, and their decisions were just heartbreaking. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod This is a perfect summer read and brought to mind Fiona Davis's The Masterpiece (because of its connection to Grand Central Station) and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife (because of the role of time in the central love story).⠀ 5y

It is a love story conquering time and obstacles. Set in 1940‘s Grand Central Station. A great light read for summer vacation. The plot is slow but not boring. I don't like the male lead character, but the female lead is pretty great.

I was SO excited for this book. Historical fiction, romance, & fantasy - it sounded right up my alley. I was disappointed. The premise of the novel is extremely clever, but I didn‘t like the execution of it. The characters felt flat to me. There were stretches of the book where I felt quite bored.
With that being said, I liked the ending.
It wasn‘t a bad book. It wasn‘t a great book. I‘m very apathetic about it. I give it a solid 2.5/5 stars.

Great (so far) book that takes place in the 1920/30s at Grand Central Station and gives a great history. Really enjoyed this unconventional historical love story.
1938 - Nora can‘t leave Grand Central Terminal. Joe, a train leverman, falls in love with her. How can they make a life together?
Nora‘s unusual circumstances and the Depression era / WWII setting made for a very enjoyable story.
Also learned a lot of history about Grand Central Station.

I simply loved this book. It started off slowly, but as it unfurled and gained momentum, I fell deeper and deeper into its many chasms...an epic supernatural time-travel tale, a complicated and heart wrenching love story, an absorbingly interesting historical spanning from the mid 1920s-1947 and a true celestial/geographical phenomenon that seems more like science fiction...this book covers a lot of territory. And it all takes place in 🔽
