Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump
Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump | Andrew G McCabe
On March 16, 2018, just twenty-six hours before his scheduled retirement from the organization he had served with distinction for more than two decades, Andrew G. McCabe was fired from his position as deputy director of the FBI. President Donald Trump celebrated on Twitter: "Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy."In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career, and an impassioned defense of the FBI's agents, and of the institution's integrity and independence in protecting America and upholding our Constitution.McCabe started as a street agent in the FBI's New York field office, serving under director Louis Freeh. He became an expert in two kinds of investigations that are critical to American national security: Russian organized crime--which is inextricably linked to the Russian state--and terrorism. Under Director Robert Mueller, McCabe led the investigations of major attacks on American soil, including the Boston Marathon bombing, a plot to bomb the New York subways, and several narrowly averted bombings of aircraft. And under James Comey, McCabe was deeply involved in the controversial investigations of the Benghazi attack, the Clinton Foundation's activities, and Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. The Threat recounts in compelling detail the time between Donald Trump's November 2016 election and McCabe's firing, set against a page-turning narrative spanning two decades when the FBI's mission shifted to a new goal: preventing terrorist attacks on Americans. But as McCabe shows, right now the greatest threat to the United States comes from within, as President Trump and his administration ignore the law, attack democratic institutions, degrade human rights, and undermine the U.S. Constitution that protects every citizen. Important, revealing, and powerfully argued, The Threat tells the true story of what the FBI is, how it works, and why it will endure as an institution of integrity that protects America.

Great evening last night with fellow Democrats, raising money for our local organization and candidates. Former Acting Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe, was the speaker. He talked not just about the topics of his book, but also about getting involved and having hope. He did no trash talking, but lots of straight talking about the current administration. Great night!

Well written and interesting book. Enjoyed that it was narrated by McCabe as well. #audio

FBI agents are on the outside of politics looking in. At least that‘s how it‘s supposed to be. Until political figures cross the boundary and muck with investigations. McCabe doesn‘t lead with the story of attacks, email, and possible collusion. He starts with the NYC Russian mob, and then proceeds into counter terrorism. Well done and readable.

Well, this is appropriate to the current news cycle. Especially considering that the author of the quote worked for Mueller at the time. And it‘s a good thing to keep in mind as Americans put Mueller‘s testimony in perspective and in context. #politicalreader #politicalnerd #memoir

Lauram I liked this book much more than I‘d expected. Yesterday, I thought about this quote while watching certain Congressmen make absolute fools of themselves. 5y
wanderinglynn That‘s one reason I hated living in DC—it‘s all a game, all staged with the focus of getting your soundbite on tonight‘s news. It‘s exhausting. 😣 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lauram Glad I‘m not the only one. The author will actually be in my town for a Democratic fundraiser this fall. I can‘t wait! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @wanderinglynn Ugh—that‘d be tough. I got a feel for that atmosphere when I read 5y

Started this one today. It‘s so easy to read, at least in terms of writing style, compared to Proof of Collusion. Plus he‘s coming to my city in September for a fundraising dinner. Might just have to get tickets!

I liked that it was very straightforward, this was my experience, this is how x thing is supposed to work but it‘s been corrupted. It‘s scary to think about how much norms, and even laws, are being undermined and enough people aren‘t doing anything about it. You may think it‘s ok because you‘re somehow benefiting but I can guarantee you, some day what is happening is going to bite a lot of people in the ass.

This was a good one. Gives a good account of what the FBI does and the terror attacks he helped investigate. Also gives his account of this administration and how they operate.

A very interesting book, while I don‘t agree with how the Clinton email stuff was handled, I understand a bit more why it was handled the way it was. Definitely an interesting perspective on the FBI. 4⭐️ #24hourreadathon #deweysreadathon

“The President has stepped over bright ethical and moral lines whenever he has encounters them. His unpredictable, often draconian behavior is dangerous- a threat to both the Bureau and the nation.”

I enjoyed learning about the inner workings of the FBI and was not surprised to read of McCabe‘s bizarre encounters with well-known government figures. #LitsyAtoZ

In The Threat, McCabe systematically demonstrates how the FBI goes about investigating by discussing some of the past cases he has worked on. He also reveals how it does not work, in a clear, unblemished refutation and rebuke of Trump. While I do think he idealizes the FBI and it‘s people a bit, the book is strong and damning.

I‘m not a non fiction dude but I figure this books is a necessary read for all Americans, kinda like how the Constitution is a necessary read for the president. Couple of chapters in I‘m ready move Silence of the Lambs down to my second favorite book about the FBI, and Andrew McCabe is now my favorite G-Man.

I was surprised by how compelling this was for me. It‘s mostly an account of McCabe‘s FBI career. He describes the work and all of its detailed bureaucracy and methods without bogging down in minutia. His obvious love and respect for the agency give what could be a sappy read plenty of authenticity. The most salacious details are some of the least interesting. What it does best is give context to some of the sound-bite stories out there.

Important book to read. Always must read each person‘s‘ account of serious issues. Andrew McCabe is the stereotypical FBI agent and I believe in my heart of hearts he did what he believed was in the best interest of the US. Worth reading

“Fear is why the president still has a map of his electoral college victory hanging outside the door to the Oval Office. “On one occasion Sessions launched into a diatribe about whom we were hiring at the FBI. Back in the old days, he said, you all only hired Irishmen. They were drunks, but they could be trusted. Not like all those new people with nose rings and tattoos—who knows what they‘re doing?”
