My Soul to Keep (Revised)
My Soul to Keep (Revised) | Tananarive Due
27 posts | 36 read | 57 to read
When Jessica marries David, he is everything she wants in a family man: brilliant, attentive, ever youthful. Yet she still feels something about him is just out of reach. Soon, as people close to Jessica begin to meet violent, mysterious deaths, David makes an unimaginable confession: More than 400 years ago, he and other members of an Ethiopian sect traded their humanity so they would never die, a secret he must protect at any cost. Now, his immortal brethren have decided David must return and leave his family in Miami. Instead, David vows to invoke a forbidden ritual to keep Jessica and his daughter with him forever. Harrowing, engrossing and skillfully rendered, "My Soul to Keep" traps Jessica between the desperation of immortals who want to rob her of her life and a husband who wants to rob her of her soul. With deft plotting and an unforgettable climax, this tour de force reminiscent of early Anne Rice will win Due a new legion of fans.

I enjoyed this- it was more creepy than scary in some parts. I wanted to shake Jessica- has she never watched a horror movie 🤷‍♀️
Author is not well known here so the rest of the series is quite expensive- may need to shop around.

I like how Due takes what's essentially a variation on a vampire story and imbues it with emotional depth and meaning, and gives me chills along the way. At its base is the question, what is the purpose of the gift of life, mortal or otherwise? The immortals in this novel have rules and a culture and a code that feel--- much like human culture in general---arbitrary and made up. I think I'd like to read the sequel now, too.

GingerAntics This sounds really interesting. 3y

A character just filled up the tank of a minivan for $10. This is what happens when you read a book published in 1997.

BiblioLitten We were just talking about the current gas prices for a full tank. 3y
Addison_Reads I really enjoyed this book. I hope you do too. 3y

Megabooks Wow…and now I‘m remembering my first tank of gas (1996) was 96 cents a gallon. Just wow. 3y
ImperfectCJ @Megabooks I remember filling up my mom's Jeep around 1996-1997 and being shocked that I had to use a 20 to pay. 3y
ImperfectCJ @Addison_Reads I am! I like the emotional depth and nuance Due's writing has. This was going to be my selection for round 14 of #lmpbc, but the used hardcover I bought smells a little musty, which I know bothers some readers a lot. 3y

Such a good book! I read the second half in one afternoon. Jessica has a perfect life, exciting job, loving husband David, and precious daughter Kira. Then her friend is murdered, her sister attacked, and she discovers her husband is immortal?! A secret that cannot be known, but now she does. Life goes out of control as the consequences of all her knowledge come to bear. Second book of Ferbuary #bookspin done!

@Jadams1776 @allureofbeauty @phantomx Some ideas for #lmpbc #GroupH for round 14. These are what I already own, and if none of these work, I can totally buy one (I'm eyeing one by Tananarive Due: My Soul To Keep, tagged). The Quiet Boy is more of a thriller and the Moshfegh is, based on what I know about her writing, probably more weird than horror, but I thought they were close enough to include as options. Any of these look interesting?

phantomx I've been wanting to read My Soul to Keep for a long time. But I'm also fine with whatever everyone else picks 3y
allureofbeauty I vote death in her hand 3y
Jadams89 Death in Her Hands or My Soul to Keep sound good to me 3y
ImperfectCJ @phantomx @allureofbeauty @Jadams1776 Thanks for weighing in! I've ordered a copy of My Soul To Keep. If it takes too long to arrive (or if the "very good" used copy I ordered is less than acceptable), I'll go with Death in Her Hands 3y

A thrilling original take on vampires. Both a love story and a horror novel. Not knowing much going in is best. 4⭐️ +15 #teamhendrix theme read.

This was a really interesting story about immortality. I did struggle with Dawit/David‘s character and believing a 500 year old person would behave the way he did though. I‘d tried reading this before and had a hard time getting into it, but second time was the charm. Will probably check out the sequel at some point.

I tried listening to this audiobook last year and just wasn‘t in the mood I guess, because today I am fully involved in the story.

Lots of posts coming so that I can get things totalled for #Scarathlon2020.

I loved this book. It felt like a mixture of Stephen King's writing and Octavia Butler's. It was quite a journey through the lives of immortals, full of rich African culture and folklore, a wonderfully created magical world, and vibrant well-developed characters. 💚

It‘s four hours away until midnight, but I‘m calling time at 7:22:11. Working double shifts Saturday and Thursday took their toll on me, and a good majority of my reading was spent sleeping instead. I made it to chapter 8 of Dune. My Soul to Keep and Grimly Jane I managed to get one chapter each read. Hope to see you all next month without a chaotic work schedule interfering.

Sunday night #readtobreathe marathon. I‘m a little behind on what I wanted to accomplish and today I‘m aiming for Deep Breaths (read 100 pages) with tagged book. I slept my day off away recovering from working double shifts yesterday so I‘m going to read throughout the night until I get tired enough to fall asleep.

This story about immortal beings from Africa is compelling and the characters are very convincing in their fallibility. I could feel the music in this book. It was a supernatural suspense thriller with a human heartbeat and mystical rhythm.

This was supposed to be a #screamathon book, but despite being shelved as horror on GR, it‘s definitely not a scary book. It is, however, really well-written urban fantasy/paranormal that I enjoyed a lot. Very original and thought-provoking. I loved Jessica, but the other main character was hard to like most of the time. I will continue the series.

This was also my #PersonOfColorMCParanormal for #Booked2019. 🙌🏻

I have mixed feelings about this book. The story was interesting but I really didn‘t care for the characters. Most of the time immortals come off a little more enlightened but this guy couldn‘t even respect his wife career and goals. I think there is potential based on the ending that the next book will better. So I will continue the story. #blitsyhistorymonth

I really liked the premise of this book (a non-vampire concept of immortal people of color) but, unfortunately, I didn‘t particularly care about any of the characters. Could be that it was a tough book to listen to on audio and maybe would‘ve been better read.

Ohmygaawwwwwddd this was so good!! I can't believe I've never read Tananarive Due before. It has a slow burn to start, but the stress and nail-biting increased all through to the end and it did NOT end like I was expecting it to. I simultaneously am dying to read the next book but also afraid that it won't hold up to how great this was. 😍😱🤯

Have you ever been meandering through a decent-but-unremarkable novel, only to realize that, holy hell, you haven't torn your eyes away from the pages in three hours and have no desire to start now. This book does that. It begins as an unassuming and almost deceptively bland story of domestic bliss: a successful young journalist, her perfect husband, their beautiful daughter. As Due lulls you, she's also sinking her hooks in so slowly that you 👇

2BR02B don't even feel it. Much like Jessica, the protagonist, by the time you realize the sinister spiral you're caught in, it's much too late to turn back. 6y

Just starting this amazingly creepy book... Jessica is a journalist happily married to David. She believes David merely an academic, stay-at-home husband, but he is, in fact, an emotionally unstable, immortal killer. 😱

I realize for oh so many people this would be an unremarkable month of reading, but 18 books in January is somewhat a minor miracle for me. And while they weren‘t all great, quite a few of them were. Here‘s hoping February is just as wonderful!

sunnyaltman 28 books is amazing! Also, I'm having serious handwriting envy right now! 7y
dastevensish @sunnyaltman Yikes—28 Books would be amazing! Total typo—I only read 18, which for me is still pretty amazing. 😉 (edited) 7y

Told myself I was going to get better about posting my reads this year, and already I almost forgot. First in her African Immortals series, this book made sure I would read the rest. Not because of any cliffhanger ending, but simply because it was a unique, suspenseful, compelling read. Supernatural tales aren‘t really my most-loved genre, but so far I am two for two when it comes to Due‘s books. #diversebooks
