The Sweet Far Thing
The Sweet Far Thing | Libba Bray
It has been a year of change since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Having bound the wild, dark magic of the realms to her, Gemma has forged unlikely and unsuspected new alliances both with the headstrong Felicity and timid Ann, Kartik, the exotic young man whose companionship is forbidden, and the fearsome creatures of the realms. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test those bonds. As her friendship with Felicity and Ann faces its gravest trial, and with the Order grappling for control of the realms, Gemma is compelled to decide once and for all which path she is meant to take.Pulled forward by fate, the destiny Gemma faces threatens to set chaos loose, not only in the realms, but also upon the rigid Victorian society whose rules Gemma has both defied and followed. Where does Gemma really belong? And will she, can she, survive?

I'm prepped and ready for the #readathon tomorrow and now I'm in bed for a little pre-readathon reading before I go to sleep. I've only got about 15 pages left of the tagged book.

This was the third volume of the Gemma Doyle trilogy (?) and I wish there would be more books with this character. Libba Bray's writing style is great and makes a 819 pages book a delight to read. Awesome historical fiction with fantasy and emotional depth.

Cheshirecat913 Yes! I loved this series and it made me a huge Libba Bray fan. 4y
LeticiaToraci @Cheshirecat913 Is "The Diviners" like this or more towards horror? 4y
Cheshirecat913 You know, it wasn't until way after I read Diviners that I saw it described as horror or creepy. I don't read horror in general. I read Diviners a good number of years back now but I don't remember it being what I would call horror. The Gemma Doyle books are fantastical and The Diviners is definitely paranormal. I don't remember it being much more creepy then the creepy tree in A Sweet Far Thing though. I know it had a more realistic feel. 4y
Cheshirecat913 Bray really did a good job invoking the 1920s and I learned a few things about that time period. I bought the next book but haven't gotten around to reading it. I really need to read The Diviners again and tackle the rest of the series. 4y
LeticiaToraci I'll put The Diviners in my TBR. 4y

SPOILER ALERT

Honestly I‘m kind of over these ups and downs with Kartik at this point. I really loved him and Gemma for most of the story but I think his dramatic “there‘s nothing for me here” exit to India is just treacherous. I almost wonder if he will turn up one more time before the book ends since he always seems to find his way back into the story.

This book was almost a DNF for me. The moodiness and everything seemed incredibly predictable and at times, forced. Book two of the series redeemed the first, but this did not. I did enjoy the ending when everything started to pick up, but I was annoyed by the main character through most of this read.

Slajaunie I finished it but was not thrilled. 6y

Libba Bray is one of my favorite young adult authors. I've read the other two books in this series and looking forward to this one! #tbr

TommieMarie74 I read the first in this series and then got pulled in to other books. I need to get back to this one. Love Libba Bray‘s work! 7y
SamHeartCoffee @TommieMarie74 It's been awhile since I read the first two, but I enjoyed them so much that this one is hopefully as good! 7y

tonyahoswalt I love this series, and Libby Bray! Have you read her newest series? 7y
SamHeartCoffee @tonyahoswalt I haven't read her newest series. What's it like? Do tell! 7y
tonyahoswalt @SamHeartCoffee It's called The Diviners series, it takes place in 1920's New York, prohibition, flappers, etc. Some people have powers such as healing, dream walking, object reading, etc. and they are called the Diviners. In the first book, if I remember correctly, there is a murder that they are investigating. 7y
SamHeartCoffee @tonyahoswalt Nice! That sounds Iike I would really enjoy it. 7y

I read this series nearly 10 years ago and all I remembered about it was how much I loved it! It was really fun going back and reliving the magic and discovering it all over again. Love the Victorian Gothic setting and the unique fantasy world.

This was the conclusion to a wonderful, exciting trilogy. It is fantastical and magical, and also deals with social issues from the Victorian age.

"Do you ever feel that way?"
"Lonely?"
I search for the words. "Restless. As if you haven't really met yourself yet. As is you'd passed yourself once in the fog, and your heart leapt - 'Ah! There I Am! I've been missing that piece!' But it happens too fast, and then that part of you disappears into the fog again. And you spend the rest of your days looking for it."

The final book in the Gemma Doyle Trilogy. If you are looking for a happy ending. This was not it. I read this series when it came out and I still cannot get over the ending. It is a fantastic story, don't get me wrong. It was the first book where I was not expecting that ending. If Libba had ended it the way I had expected, it probably would not have been as great.

This is the third in this ya series that I've read. I love it. The sad trap of women's lives in this period is wonderfully exposed and intertwined with fantasy. The language is a bit stilted and Victorian which is appropriate for these characters and setting.
