Ancestral Night
Ancestral Night | Elizabeth Bear
A space salvager and her partner make the discovery of a lifetime that just might change the universe in this wild, big-ideas space opera from multi award-winning author Elizabeth Bear. Halmey Dz and her partner Connla Kurucz are salvage operators, living just on the inside of the law...usually. Theirs is the perilous and marginal existencewith barely enough chance of striking it fantastically bigjust onceto keep them coming back for more. They pilot their tiny ship into the scars left by unsuccessful White Transitions, searching for the relics of lost human and alien vessels. But when they make a shocking discovery about an alien species that has been long thought dead, it may be the thing that could tip the perilous peace mankind has found into full-out war. Energetic and electrifying, Ancestral Night is a dazzling new space opera, sure to delight fans of Alastair Reynolds, Iain M. Banks, and Peter F. Hamilton.

Bk4 of January 2022 & #JumpStart2022 is done. Finally! Haven‘t had time to read with the cleaning but I got there in the end.Fantastic space opera, the start of a new series it‘s full of beautiful imagery & space facts. There‘s a section that talks about the SuperMassiveBlackHole at the centre of the Milky Way that was brilliant. The characters & the story were both well written & interesting. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #Pop22 #ReadHarder22👇

#fourfoursin21 - revolution (because the prompt made me think of the cover art) @Lauredhel

I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next book. If you are a fan of big idea space operas, I recommend this. Elizabeth Bear is an excellent writer. It was quite a slow, thinky read for me, but I appreciated that.

Lauredhel Oh and I love that cover 4y

My #24in48 stack for the weekend! Plus audiobook - still Bleak House - and ebook - still Some of the Best of Tor dot com 2020.

I know I won't make the full 24 hrs, but hoping for 12+ and a book or two finished. I'm at 1 hour right now.

Nute Great stack! Love that mug! 4y
llwheeler @Nute thanks! 4y
marleed My book of Robert Frost poems is one of my most treasured items. It was a gift from my dad in the early 70s after I randomly memorized and oft‘ recited (as a grade schooler) the fire and ice poem! 4y

Just got a fourth #BookSpinBingo with the tagged. It‘s a compelling hard SF, though the length feels excessive in places. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Looking forward to my stack of February reads!

I stacked this as Bailed / DNF, although I did end up finishing it over several tries, but skimming for plot only.

I didn't click with alll the philosophical musings at all, but mostly enjoyed the world building, particularly the glimpses of cats in space! 🐱 😻 ✨

Squidapus Ooo, Squidapus wants to read Bloody Rose but is the first book necessary to understanding or liking the second? 5y

GrilledCheeseSamurai @Squidapus You can understand the story well enough without reading the first, however, the emotional punches and inside jokes will be blunted by not having the connection to certain characters. 🤷‍♂️ 5y
Eggs Gorgeous blue 👏🏻🤗💙 5y
vivastory Did you like the Tregillis? It's been on my TBR. I loved 5y

This is a phenomenal scifi! The audo narrator is absolutely fantastic. The worldbuilding was enthralling and all the various alien species felt believable. Plus there are ship cats! I really recommend this one and can't wait for the next in the series!

One of the best books I have read this year.
A space opera that can be read as a standalone, which explores aliens as well as human emotions, morals and identity. I loved it!!

Omg there's a new Elizabeth Bear coming in March and look at that cover!

Guess I should probably read the 4 or 5 books I have of her backlist that I haven't gotten to yet... but I already know I want this one! *grabby hands*

Found via https://www.tor.com/2018/12/26/the-books-were-looking-forward-to-in-2019/

Lots of other amazing looking stuff in there too - new Zen Cho, Kate Elliott, Ann Leckie and more! Looks like a great year for sff!
