2024 review.

I pretty much stand by my 2018 review. Although it's a twisty case, there are moments when your attention wanders & it seems to go on forever before the long awaited conclusion. I'm also remembering why Maeve Kerrigan's character irritated me in these first few books. 3⭐

OutsmartYourShelf 2018 review.

Maeve Kerrigan returns in a case that starts off with paedophiles being tortured and murdered and ends with an even more twisted tale of kidnapping and imprisonment of young women. Despite this, parts of the book dragged a little and at times the most interesting part was the on/off relationship between Kerrigan and Rob Langton.

OutsmartYourShelf There were a couple of new characters, most notably DI Josh Derwent who obviously graduated from the Gene Hunt School of Charm and Policing.

I‘ve caught up on a lot of my mystery series, so I‘ve started this Maeve Kerrigan series. This is the second book, and I liked it a lot. It starts out about solving cases with unsavory victims and turns into more. Maeve is a good character. The book also covers the sexism a woman faces in a field like law enforcement. I‘m looking forward to reading more of these.

TrishB Love this series. 2y
MallenNC @TrishB That‘s great to hear. I am glad I have several left to read! 2y

If this book is any indication of how the rest of the series goes then count me as hook, line, and sinker. Holy moly!!! It was even better than the first book! The tension of the investigation, the twist, Maeve‘s sarcasm... seriously it‘s so good! Maeve is quickly climbing up on my list of favorite investigators. I cannot wait to get into the next book.

Getting some much needed reading time and cuddle time with Theo. Up most of the night with poor Matty. His fever seems to be gone for now but has no appetite. We‘ve even tried sweet things and he bats us away. Hopefully after his nap he will be thirsty and hungry. Thank goodness it‘s Friday! 😅

jenniferw88 @Cinfhen When daydreamer Clementine discovers a mysterious house standing in the middle of town that was never there before, she is pulled towards it by the powerful sense of a mother she never knew. The place is full of snowglobes, swirling with stars and snow and each containing a trapped magician, watched over by Gan, the bitter keeper of the house. One of these is Dylan, a boy who teases her in the real world but who is now desperate for ⬇️ 4y

I read a lot of thriller/detective books and so I always look at the way the main character is described, the way they work. Maeve Kerrigan is the main character (detective constable) and is described very well, the methodical way of thinking and the way the author describes what she is doing, thinking and the way she interacts with other people makes it seem like it is real, like you are watching it all unfolding as you are reading it.

Maeve Kerrigan is determined to prove she has what it takes as a female in the London police force. A brutal killer is targeting sex offenders and Maeve soon finds someone targeting her. DC Josh Derwent is sarcastic, egotistical and not easy to work with. The book also focuses on Maeve's personal relationships with her family and DC Rob Langton. Unique characters with a twisting plot. I recommend to those who love police procedurals.

This book grew on me more as it progressed. Wasn‘t altogether sold initially, not helped by the paedophile theme, even if someone was killing them! It did take a while to get going, but eventually I was totally sold & found it very difficult to put down in the second half of the book. Maeve is a great character, & we saw some Important changes in her life in this one. Very well written overall and love the characters. I look forward to continuing!

EadieB @Andrew65 Nice review! I‘m starting chapter 6. Love learning about her mum and brother and wife. Also about her relationship with Rob. Makes the paedophile theme go down easier. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We certainly get to know her better in this book. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes I like that! It takes away from the gritty parts! 6y

Thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the Maeve Kerrigan series. Someone is brutally killing convicted peadophiles in London. A well-known criminal‘s daughter goes missing. This and a lot more is going on in DC Kerrigan‘s life. She gets highly involved in the case, more than she ever thought she would. Intelligently written, well-plotted, and highly engaging. If I‘d have a friend on the Force I‘d like it to be Maeve Kerrigan!

TrishB Me too! Love Maeve 💕 6y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Not finished the book (in fact not had a chance to read any since Sunday night) but I am enjoying it. Although similar themes to other books I feel it is fresh due to taking place in Denmark - a country I‘ve a,ways wanted to visit. 6y

Despite the subject matter (vigilante killing paedophiles and the kidnapping and imprisonment of young women), the book dragged in parts.

There was also the on/off relationship between Kerrigan and colleague, Rob Langton. Could get tiresome. Plus new character DI Josh Derwent obviously graduated from the Gene Hunt School of Charm and Policing. Rating: 3 ⭐️

Second I've read in the series now, really enjoying the development of the characters. Only gripe - is the police force this sexist (I think I probably know the answer) as sometimes I hiss a bit at those sections.....
