When the Doves Disappeared
When the Doves Disappeared: A novel | Sofi Oksanen
13 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
From the acclaimed author of Purge (a stirring and humane work of art The New Republic) comes a riveting, chillingly relevant new novel of occupation, resistance, and collaboration in Eastern Europe.1941: In Communist-ruled, war-ravaged Estonia, two men are fleeing from the Red ArmyRoland, a fiercely principled freedom fighter, and his slippery cousin Edgar. When the Germans arrive, Roland goes into hiding; Edgar abandons his unhappy wife, Juudit, and takes on a new identity as a loyal supporter of the Nazi regime . . . 1963: Estonia is again under Communist control, independence even further out of reach behind the Iron Curtain. Edgar is now a Soviet apparatchik, desperate to hide the secrets of his past life and stay close to those in power. But his fate remains entangled with Rolands, and with Juudit, who may hold the key to uncovering the truth . . . Great acts of deception and heroism collide in this masterful story of surveillance, passion, and betrayal, as Sofi Oksanen brings to life the frailtyand the resilienceof humanity under the shadow of tyranny. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Thank you for sending me this book to read @jenniferw88 I enjoyed it so much. I have not read a book from this standpoint before, a country (Estonia) torn between the oppression of two opposing invaders, Communist Russia and Nazi Germany. I‘ll have it and the current #lmpbc book in the first class post on Tuesday.

Crazeedi Hi Verity! I hope you are well, take care!! Happy spring ⚘🌷⚘🌷 4y
jenniferw88 It's just arrived - thanks for the mini eggs! 4y

Hi @klarusu @veritysalter @ElaineR
A couple of questions!

Just wondering if you are a) allowed out yet and happy to go to the post office, and b) happy to start #lmpbc back up again? And if you are, where did you get to back in March - are you ready to send on or are/were you still annotating? I'm all ready to send but it obviously depends on everyone else!

veritysalter @jenniferw88 Yes, we are allowed out now and I finished annotating back when we originally planned. I‘ll get the book out to you this week. Hope you‘re well. 4y
jenniferw88 @veritysalter eek exciting! I've messaged @klarusu on Twitter so @ElaineR I'll try to aim to send this week too unless you're not ready to send. 4y
jenniferw88 @veritysalter and yes, as far as I'm aware, I'm well. Hope you and your family are ok too! 4y
veritysalter @jenniferw88 we‘re all good, slowly and carefully getting back ‘out there‘. 4y
jenniferw88 @veritysalter I sent mine to @ElaineR today so hopefully we can start again. 4y

Hi @klarusu @veritysalter @ElaineR - just checking in re #lmpbc. At the moment I'm allowed out from 1st July (this is dependent on gov't & ❤ hospital), so I could (& would be happy) to start then, but I realise it may be different for you three. Do you know when it is possible for you to go out again? I'm equally happy to delay for a while longer if you don't feel safe going out again in July. X

veritysalter I have the same information as you @jenniferw88 happy to restart as soon as we are allowed out. 4y
ElaineR Work has calmed down a bit so happy to aim for July. I'm still not reading much at the min (just don't have the focus) but it's improving, slowly! This could be good motivation. 4y
jenniferw88 @veritysalter @ElaineR @klarusu with the latest announcement it looks likely that I won't be able to go out until August now. My parents are happy to send parcels but I'm guessing Verity that you're in a similar position to me. Think it's going to have to be August now 😭. 4y
veritysalter Yes @jenniferw88 August for me too. 4y

Hi #LMPBC friends!
As @veritysalter , @ElaineR and myself all have restrictions/duties placed on us due to #Covid19, do you fancy postponing this round until it's all over, or just cancel all together? @klarusu

veritysalter Postponing is good for me, happy to assess in 12 weeks, if we‘re allowed out again then. #StaySafe everyone. 5y
ElaineR Postponing would be wonderful. Hope you're all safe and well x 5y
jenniferw88 Hi @veritysalter and @ElaineR , I've just been messaging with @klarusu on Twitter and she's also happy to postpone. I suggest we check in on here about 22 June (that's when I can come out of self-isolating) and see how we are all feeling about it. In the meantime, stay safe! 😊 5y
veritysalter Stay safe too xx 5y
ElaineR Thanks @jenniferw88. You too X 5y

Very interesting book, if a bit slow in places.

#Estonia for #readingeurope2020 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

#W for #litsyatoz @BookishMarginalia

Third physical book for #MarchUnshelfing @Clwojick

@Cinfhen this may not be the book you want to use for #Estonia because part of it focuses on Germany's treatment of the Estonian Jews.

4 1/2 🌟

Librarybelle Great review! 5y
Cinfhen I just read a book last week that I used for Estonia! But it covers TONS of other European countries and it was really enjoyable 5y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen ok, just wanted to warn you because of the subject matter! 5y

#reversereadathon book 5

Country 9: I feel like Estonia gets forgotten a lot. I saw the old city of Tallinn and the KGB Museum.
This book was okay, I think it hit me in the wrong mood. Well-written, it details the national traumas of Naziism and Soviet Communist rule through cousins on opposite sides (Roland and Edgar). The USSR was so Orwellian, and right after Nazi rule...I feel so badly for the people.😣

Linsy What a great photo! 6y
bookandcat @Linsy thank you! My violet has been working so hard to give me a new round of blossoms. I had to show her off - I'm always excited when I don't kill a plant 🤣😂 6y

I had to look back on my GR round world challenge to find this literal interpretation of this thread. An interesting read from Estonia.

shawnmooney Ooooh this sounds good! I see @LeahBergen already has it stacked! 8y
andrew61 @shawnmooney a while since I read it shawn but i did give it 4*, definitely an interesting period as nazi rule slipped seamlessly into communist rule. 8y

I was wondering if I have a book that has a dove in the title ... Of course I have it, because my Kindle it's some kind of wonderland! Needless to say, but yeah ... unread 😊

#lyricalapril #whendovescry

Cinfhen Today's prompt is hard...score one for the Kindle 😊 8y
tricours I like Oksanen, but her books aren't the type of books I just dive into... 8y
Simona @Cinfhen My Kindle is full of surprises 😂 8y
Simona @tricours I don't know nothing about her works, but she looks very interesting! 8y
Decayy I've only read her debut The Purge and it was okay, not really interested in adding her next books to the tbr list 8y
