Loooooved!
Loved it! I saw it several times on here today. Downloaded it and read it. I‘m going to reread it tomorrow just to make sure I didn‘t miss anything!
Lewis Michaux started a one-of-a-kind bookstore in Harlem in the 1930s and named it the National Memorial African Bookstore. It became a cultural meeting place/library-Lewis believed in the power of the printed word.

The art of this book was very cool. It was burly but it was full of color. It used every inch of the space on the page.
This was very good read. It was engaging and really enjoyed the relationship the father and son had.
“He was right. People came and they read.”
I really enjoyed this book. The images worked hand in hand with the words to provide a story that was moving and pleasing to the eye.
This book written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and illustrated by R. Gregory Christie tells the story of Harlem‘s greatest bookstore, the National Memorial African Bookstore. This story is all about reading and black culture. The illustrations are gorgeous. Christie uses rougher strokes and a distinct color pallet to set the mood of the book store and people that are being portrayed.
Loved this story. The power of knowledge and reading was celebrated by Lewis Michaux who ran a book shop celebrating Black culture and history.
This book takes a historical look at the National Memorial African Bookstore and what it meant to the people who frequented it. This is a delightful read that really captures the heart of activism in this space. #CivilRightsMovement #BLM #AmericanHistory #nonfiction #PictureBook #BookStore
Thought the writing was slightly awkward in places, but liked the history of the bookstore and the art.

I‘ve always believed this and I‘m excited to use my newfound time taking an online course. Learn something new everyday.
I love the story of this bookstore and I love that there‘s a picture book about it.
Love the pictures. Great book to try and instill a life long love of books in young readers while providing an interesting aspect of history that even many adults (myself included) may not already be familiar with.
A fantastically written and beautifully illustrated look at the real life Harlem renaissance bookstore owned by the author's great uncle. Fantastic read and highly recommended.
Oh nooooo I'm away from home and I finished the only book I brought with me whatever will I doooo...

(Picture taken yesterday. Today it is pouring rain and very chilly!)
I loved this book so much. It‘s a historical fiction picture book about a wonderful Harlem bookstore in the 1930s. It‘s inspirational and timely.

Great children's picture book about Lewis Micheaux opening a book store in Harlem that became the National Memorial African bookstore and a meeting place for civil rights activists.
This is a good B book about African Americans and education. This is a story about a African American who had a book itch. He began with 5 books in a bookstore and now has tons for books. Back then African Americans didn‘t read or get much of an education. The bookstore became a monument in Harlem. It‘s a good story to share with students about never giving up on there dreams. This is an Corretta Scott King and Jane Addams Award Winning Book.
Telling the story of a famous African American bookstore in Harlem, this #picturebook was both empowering and emotional. Written by the great-niece of the owner, it relates several aspects about the store's history and the type of people who frequented it. With incredibly quotable dialogue & gorgeous illustrations, The Book Itch is a must-read.
What a powerful book! I am so sad the bookstore closed down. People need places dedicated to community and ideas.
it wasn't easy for my 3-year-old to sit through this, but she did want to re-read it several times and now knows the word propaganda. #weneeddiversebooks
I really like this picture book! It's a great story that can spark a lot of discussion. Plus, it's about a historically significant book store! The picture is from inside the cover.
Dad says books can help you. Not every book is true, he says, but the more you read, the easier it is to figure out for yourself what is true.
