Lewis Michaux started a one-of-a-kind bookstore in Harlem in the 1930s and named it the National Memorial African Bookstore. It became a cultural meeting place/library-Lewis believed in the power of the printed word.

The art of this book was very cool. It was burly but it was full of color. It used every inch of the space on the page.

This book written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and illustrated by R. Gregory Christie tells the story of Harlem‘s greatest bookstore, the National Memorial African Bookstore. This story is all about reading and black culture. The illustrations are gorgeous. Christie uses rougher strokes and a distinct color pallet to set the mood of the book store and people that are being portrayed.

Loved this story. The power of knowledge and reading was celebrated by Lewis Michaux who ran a book shop celebrating Black culture and history.

Thought the writing was slightly awkward in places, but liked the history of the bookstore and the art.

Love the pictures. Great book to try and instill a life long love of books in young readers while providing an interesting aspect of history that even many adults (myself included) may not already be familiar with.

A fantastically written and beautifully illustrated look at the real life Harlem renaissance bookstore owned by the author's great uncle. Fantastic read and highly recommended.

This is a good B book about African Americans and education. This is a story about a African American who had a book itch. He began with 5 books in a bookstore and now has tons for books. Back then African Americans didn‘t read or get much of an education. The bookstore became a monument in Harlem. It‘s a good story to share with students about never giving up on there dreams. This is an Corretta Scott King and Jane Addams Award Winning Book.

brittanyg I would use this book for an AS because it brings out a lot of history behind the author that relates to the book. http://familylocket.com/the-book-itch-researching-our-ancestors-passions/ This will have students explore there ancestors passion or itch they had that they perused. DrSpalding What a wonderful idea to have students exploring their ancestors. Sounds like SS to me! I'm thinking that this is a biography. Am I right? 7y
brittanyg @DrSpalding when I looked up the genre is said nonfiction but it could be a biography maybe? Not sure. 7y
DrSpalding Knowing that biographies are non-fiction, I believe this is a biography based on your description. 7y
brittanyg @DrSpalding okay thank you that‘s what I was thinking but I wasn‘t sure. It‘s a great book! 7y

Telling the story of a famous African American bookstore in Harlem, this #picturebook was both empowering and emotional. Written by the great-niece of the owner, it relates several aspects about the store's history and the type of people who frequented it. With incredibly quotable dialogue & gorgeous illustrations, The Book Itch is a must-read.

Dad says books can help you. Not every book is true, he says, but the more you read, the easier it is to figure out for yourself what is true.
