No Crystal Stair
No Crystal Stair: A Documentary Novel of the Life and Work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller | Vaunda Micheaux Nelson
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Told by a banker that he should sell fried chicken rather than books, since "Negroes don't read", Lewis Michaux defies the odds to build Harlem's National Memorial African Bookstore, an intellectual center and gathering place from 1939 to 1975.

Pickpick

Sign above Michaux's Harlem bookstore: "Knowledge is power--you need it every hour. Read a book." Starting with 5 books in 1939, Lewis Michaux opened a business that went far beyond a bookstore. The "documentary" format of this novel created a quick pace. If you were the kid who could spent hours in a bookstore, you will enjoy this book.
(My first Litsy book review.)

Afternoon reading. Almost done with this quick read.
Favorite quote: "I like the smell of books."
My girls get this from me. Just the other week my 13 - year-old said, "Mommy, you have to smell this book...isn't it great?"
