The Deceivers | Kristen Simmons
Pretty Little Liars meets Ocean's 11 in this intrigue-filled contemporary drama from acclaimed author Kristen Simmons. Welcome to Vale Hall, the school for aspiring con artists. When Brynn Hilder is recruited to Vale, it seems like the elite academy is her chance to start over, away from her moms loser boyfriend and her rundown neighborhood. But she soon learns that Vale chooses students not so much for their scholastic talent as for their extracurricular activities, such as her time spent conning rich North Shore kids out of their extravagant allowances. At first, Brynn jumps at the chance to help the school in its mission to rid the city of corrupt officialsbecause what could be better than giving entitled jerks what they deserve? But thats before she meets her marka senators sonand before she discovers the schools headmaster has secrets hell stop at nothing to protect. As the lines between right and wrong blur, Brynn begins to realize shes in way over head. Currently I have been reading the Deceivers a book about Brynn. Brynn is split between two worlds, her home life and school life. Often times it feels like school and home life can be very separate entities, and life is divided between the 2. While Brynns struggle is much more difficult then most of us face the premise is very similar.

Sola M I like the way you used the word ¨entities.“ It makes you seem smart, presumably smarter than you are. 1y

I have began reading “The Deceivers“ a fascinating book written by Kristen Simmons, I am only 50 pages in but I am already hooked. The Story begins by introducing the reader to Brynn, the main character. Brynn has been raised by just her mother ever since her father was killed in a conveniece store robbery. Brynn has been raised in poverty without the money for college she works a job but turns to conning others to raise money for her future.

This book is so so good! I haven't finished a book so fast in a long time. Brynn is a likeable character as well as Caleb. I like how the author got the idea for this book from Valhalla and Odin sending Valkyries out to gather souls.

So much fun I already want to reread. Brynn is a con artist from the very first page, recruited to a special school in order to con & spy for its headmaster. The characters are charming (esp. Henry!) & the mind games are fun, if predictable. But they weren't annoyingly so, and I felt happy to just let the book take me on a ride. Brynn did frustrate me a bit, and the ending felt a bit abrupt & unsettling. Regardless, next book, please. I'm in.

jmtrivera I was also fortunate enough to meet the author at the NoVA Teen Book Festival, who was sweet as could be, and provided me with my own letter to enter Vale Hall! 5y

Brynn thinks she's dealing with the usual high school #cliques at first, but it's not that simple at a school for con artists. Really enjoyed this one.

Chrissyreadit I had to look twice! It‘s so odd to see my daughters name but it is becoming more common- although hers is Brynne. 6y
jmtrivera @Chrissyreadit Oh, I like it as Brynne! It's such a unique name. The author uses it as one of her references to Norse mythology! 6y
Chrissyreadit Thanks! Funny!! It‘s Welsh origin. I‘m going to order it, sounds like an entertaining read. 6y

March whizzed by! Faves of the month were probably The Deceivers, Grace and Fury, and revisiting the Anne books. Anne and The Everlasting Rose were my only #SeriesReads this month, but I started a new ones with my two faves and The Sweetheart Sham, which was pretty cute.

Who can you trust when you go to school for con men? That‘s the question Brynn has to ask herself when she is recruited to the mysterious & very exclusive Vale Hall & given her first assignment. This school should be the answer to all her problems but is it? A quick, fun & entertaining YA mystery/thriller which is the first in a new series. I expect this will be a big hit in the library, particularly with fans of Truly Devious.

Update: I definitely picked The Age of Light for my #BOTM pick and then got distracted by some of the extras that were available! These two YA picks both jumped out at me and I couldn't resist!

MarriedtoMrT I‘m really interested in The Deceivers! 6y
