My Beijing: Four Stories of Everyday Wonder | Nie Jun
26 posts | 18 read | 8 to read
Yu'er and her grandpa live in a small neighborhood in Beijingand it's full of big personalities. There's a story around every corner, and each day has a hint of magic. In one tale, Yu'er wants to swim in the Special Olympics, a sports competition for people with disabilities. But she and her grandpa don't have a pool! Their trick to help Yu'er practice wows the whole neighborhood. In another story, a friend takes Yu'er to a wild place full of musical insects. Later, Yu'er hears a special story about her grandparents. And in the final story, Yu'er and her grandpa show a cranky painter the sweet side of life.

This would be a cute book read to children and break up into multiple days of reading each story.

This book has 4 stories within the book. It is super cute and child like all about dreaming. The illustrations are very detailed and look almost like water color paintings. The text however is very small and they way the boxes are set up might be overwhelming for kids to read, as some are stacked on top of each other, others side by side, some big and some small, etc.

This book was published in 2016. It is 4 books in one. The one I read was kids at heart. The illustration in the front is what tied me into the book. The illustrations are cute and the text is easy to read.

This book consisted of 4 stories, all centered around making the right choices and being a positive person in a community! I thought it was a really cute story that could apply to many kids with the same thoughts.

This book has 4 short stories. I think this is awesome because people can read 4 stories in one book and enjoy every single one of them.

I thought this comic was adorable. I loved how it gave the real facts and angles of a professional swimmer and compared it to a dancer. It showed the measurements that a swimmer needs. I also love pictures in this book they are adorable.

Unique graphic novel that depicts a loving relationship between a girl and her grandfather. There are 4 stories to look at and talk about living in a different country. Addresses bullying and people with disabilities.

This is a sweet little comic book that tells four stories from the life of Yu'er and her Grandpa in a neighborhood in Beijing, with fantastical touches. The watercolor art is gorgeous, with lots of beautiful detail that still gives plenty of space for the stories to shine. The book is 128 pages but feels shorter, and I would gladly have read twice the number of stories.

effani #ReadHarder2021: a children‘s book that centers a disabled character but not their disability. This is a perfect pick for this task! 4y

I forgot to do my #bookreport yesterday! 😱

So. Last week I liked MY BEIJING (so lovely!) and MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I‘m also loving TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN by Talia Hibbert and vol 2 of JESSICA JONES, both of which are in progress.

I borderline liked THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E. Harrow, with reservations.

I bailed on MIDDLEGAME at maybe 60%, CLOUDS OF WITNESS at 50%, and OMORPHI by C. Kennedy at 34%. Sadness.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A beautiful book of MG graphic short stories, with a touch of the fantastic. Yu‘er lives with her (doting) grandfather in a Beijing hutong. She dreams of swimming in the Special Olympics (she has an unmentioned physical disability which leaves her unable to walk), gets saved from bullies by a mysterious boy, sends a very special letter & learns to paint. The artwork is 💚. All the stars. More please.

#graphicnovel #kidlit Four short stories of the power of invention and imagination center around Yu‘er, her grandpa, and their hutong (neighborhood) in Beijing. The author is well known in China and elsewhere but this is the first English translation published. I don‘t think I was wowed— I wanted a little more interpersonal depth and I thought the magical elements were overexplained— but I was charmed, particularly by the art.
