Death Before Wicket: A Phryne Fisher Mystery
Death Before Wicket: A Phryne Fisher Mystery | Kerry Greenwood
20 posts | 29 read | 15 to read
Phryne Fisher is on holiday. She means to take the train to Sydney (where the harbour bridge is being built), go to a few cricket matches, dine with the Chancellor of the university, and perhaps go to the Arts Ball with that young modernist, Chas Nutall. She has the costume of a lifetime, and she's not afraid to use it. When she arrives there, however, her maid Dot finds that her extremely respectable married sister Joan has vanished, leaving her small children to the neglectful care of a resentful husband. What has become of Joan, who would never leave her babies? Surely, she hasn't run away with a lover, as gossip suggests? Then while Phryne is visiting the university, the very pretty Joss and Clarence ask her to find out who has broken into the Dean's safe and stolen a number of things, including the Dean's wife's garnets and an irreplaceable illuminated book called the Hours of Juana the Mad. An innocent student has been blamed. So Phryne girds up her loins, loads her pearl-handled .32 Beretta, and sallies forth to find mayhem, murder, black magic, and perhaps a really good cocktail before more crime erupts in Sydney. Kerry Greenwood, winner of the Australian Crime Writers Asso-ciation Lifetime Achievement Award, began her Phryne Fisher series in 1989 with Cocaine Blues. She has written 18 books in this series with no sign yet that Miss Fisher is hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. Ms. Greenwood lives and writes in Australia. www.phrynefisher.com"

I love a bit of Phryne and I haven't read one for ages. She is a great antidote for me. In this one Phryne and Dot travelled to Sydney to investigate a robbery at a university and they end up investigating two other mysterious.

As always a good fun read.

I‘m on book 10 in my reread of the Phryne Fisher series via audiobook. As always, the narrator is awesome and captures Phryne‘s essence perfectly. She also captures the different voices and accents of various secondary characters so seamlessly. This book has one of my favorite sex scenes in any book (sorry if TMI!). The mystery aspect deals with Egyptian mythology and has a satisfying conclusion. 4⭐️

I‘m finishing off my #loveozfictionreadathon with Bk10 in the Phryne Fisher series by Aussie author, Kerry Greenwood. I love these books, I‘m a card carrying member of the #phryneappreciationclub Please please Kerry, write us a new Phryne adventure, I‘m begging🙏 This story is the only one set in 1928 Sydney, while the bridge was still being built & the Opera House was far in the future. Phryne & Dot are looking for Dots missing sister.🕵🏻‍♀️

It's been a stormy Sunday morning. Perfect for another adventure with Phryne.

Stress reading, pure and simple. I adore Greenwood and this Phryne Fisher set in Sydney, as opposed to her usual Melbourne, is one of my all time favorite books. The air is polluted, Puff is terrified of the rescue cat and visitor chaos remains but this book was still lovely. Cricket, Sydney, Sydney University, the occult, a missing sister and a strange theft, this is classic Phryne and Greenwood at her brilliant best. Highly, highly recommended.

ElishaLovesBooks I hope things get less stressful soon! 💙 7y

EllanaRose I love the TV series, would you recommend the books as well? 7y
gossamerchild @EllanaRose oh man. I am so in love with the books! Yes, I'd highly recommend them. Really fast reads, too. So fun! 7y
EllanaRose Awesome, thanks! I know sometimes if you watch the show first it spoils the book, but that's great! 7y

gossamerchild @EllanaRose I think there's a lot of overlap (I've actually only watched the first episode), so there probably won't be any surprises. Otherwise, I enjoyed both. Again, though, I've only watched one episode. 7y
EllanaRose Honestly I'm OK with that. I sometimes like seeing things from different perspectives, ya know? 7y
JazzFeathers @EllanaRose For me, thebook series is very uneven. Some books are great, some others are really not so. The series is more even, in my opinion, and some reletionships are more intense and interesting. Just my take at it 😉 7y
Lizpixie Love me some Miss Phryne! There‘s a lot of the books that didn‘t make it onscreen, especially regarding Phryne‘s love interest & her adopted daughters. Plus Mrs Butler is missing too. I dearly love the tv series, I think Essie Davis is fantastic as Phryne, but there‘s so much more in the books. For me at least. I recommend getting addicted to both!🤗💜💙💚❤️ 7y

My go to comfort read because the author is so consistently good. Unlike the rest of the Phryne novels, which are set in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), this one is set in Sydney, NSW. Greenwood brings her location and characters to life with depth, insight and good humor all backed up by impeccable research and great skill. A good detective story with a university, poets, the Queen of Sydney Vice, occultists & a missing sister. Wonderful book!

MrBook Love this! Welcome to @Litsy ! We hope you enjoy your stay with us 😊👍🏻. We're the most positive, tight-knit, passionate bibliophile community you'll meet. Careful: this'll take over your life. 😂👏🏻🙌🏻 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @MrBook thanks!!! Still trying to figure it out (may have impatiently skipped through the intro faster than I should have..!!) but getting there 😊😊😊 7y

My first Phryne Fisher mystery certainly lived up to expectations. A little crickey, black magic, lots of '20s fashion and, of course, a cosy mystery or thee for Phyrne to work her own magic on. I'll definitely be back for more.

I couldn't do #litsypartyofone last night but today is wide open. The kids are with Granny for the weekend and there's a storm brewing outside. SO promised a snack run later this afternoon, I'm all set. First up is to finish this Phryne Fisher.

JazzFeathers I'm reading Miss Fisher for the party too! :) 8y

My very first Phryne Fisher. I'm definitely in need of some cosy mysteries right now!

Took the kids to the library for some holiday reading.... I just couldn't help myself. Thought these might be a good antidote to my job-application-induced-brain-strain.

Wife Good luck with your job search! 🍀 I say start with the Phryne Fisher book. She can always boost my mood! 8y
Joanne1 @Wife my thoughts exactly. And as the job hunt (and career switch) will likely take some time I may just get through several. 8y

I finished this Phryne Fisher story at lunchtime. Loved this, the 10th in the series, especially because this one is set in Sydney, my hometown, instead of Melbourne. A lot of it is set in Sydney University, which I've had the pleasure of being to & it is gorgeous, very green & lots of old sandstone buildings. The case was suitably mysterious, the men were pretty and the cricket was fabulous. As the Hon.Miss Fisher would say, Very Tickety-Boo!

LeahBergen My grandmother (who grew up in the 1920s) said "very tickety boo". ? 8y
Dedebimp I really wanted to read this series but I made the mistake of starting at number one and I don't think that it is the best start. Do you have a suggestion ? 8y
TheLondonBookworm Ooh I'm gonna start saying that ☺️☺️ 8y
Lizpixie @LeahBergen @TheLondonBookworm I love all the jazz age sayings in this and Agatha Christies books! @Dedebimp I think you really need to start at the beginning, otherwise you can lose that continuity of the relationships between Phryne & Dot or Bert & Cec, and all the other people that go in & out of the books. If you'd prefer to come in later, try Death at Victoria Docks or The Green Mill Murder.🙂 8y
Lynnsoprano I'm reading Murder and Mendelssohn, and it's the first I've read. I think you're right. I'm going back to the first after this. It helps a bit that I've seen the first in the television series. 8y

#12DaysOfXmasPhoto #day10 #stockings This has both the Xmas type of stocking, a cute garland we used to put Kinder Surprise eggs into for the kids and a book containing my favourite detective in silk stockings, The Hon. Phryne Fisher. This Phryne novel is set in my hometown of Sydney rather than her usual Melbourne & involves Sydney University, a cracked safe, Tilly Devine, a famous madame/gangster from the roaring 20s in Sydney & Test Cricket.

Marchpane Clever title 😁 I love a good cricket pun, bowling a maiden over and so on. 8y
Lynnsoprano I attended my first cricket match this summer, so hopefully I will have a general understanding of any cricket references. I am getting seriously hooked on Phryne 😊 8y
