The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld | Patricia A. McKillip
Sybel, the beautiful great-granddaughter of the wizard Heald, has grown up on Eld Mountain with only the fantastic beasts summoned there by wizardry as companions. She cares nothing for humans until, when she is sixteen, a baby is brought for her to raise, a baby who awakens emotions that she has never known before. But the baby is Tamlorn, the only son of King Drede, and, inevitably, Sybel becomes entangled in the human world of love, war and revenge - and only her beasts can save her from the ultimate destruction. . .

Happy Friday! 🎉🎊🎉 I hope everyone has a great weekend lined up! I'm off today and tomorrow, since I'm working Sunday! I decided to reread the tagged book in honor of Patricia Mckillip, who just recently passed away. This is definitely one of her best books! 🌿📖

Fantastic, if brief, look at the tendency to classify female scifi/fantasy writers as MG or YA even when it‘s blatantly inappropriate to do so. Given examples include Maas‘ ACOTAR (which I have not read) and Novik‘s fairy tale retellings. I would include the tagged, as my copy is clearly marketed/labeled for the MG market and is decidedly NOT.

ravenlee @Milara I definitely understand the idea of graphic novels being ok for kids, because they‘re like cartoons, right? And the trauma that could result. I‘m thinking of something like Monstress being handed to a child. 4y
LibrarianRyan I agree with this. I think it is partly to blame for why YA is trending so much older to begin with. I have read Maas, not my favorite, but Yeah, I would not put it in YA now after reading it like we did when it first came out. My local BN took it out of YA and it is now only in adult fantasy. 4y
ravenlee @LibrarianRyan When I worked at BN we had so many parents wanting to send their “advanced reader” elementary kids to YA for something more challenging. I spent so much time trying to convince these parents to look for MG books that fit the bill because YA subject matter is just not appropriate for 10-year-olds. Having adult stuff filter into YA makes it even worse. 4y
LibrarianRyan Yep. We divided our teen section betwee YT and YA. Young Teen was 4th and up YT was high school and up. It was nice to have it differentiates. I used to hate it but I have grown to love it. 4y

"Swift as water draining into earth, stealthy as man burying man beneath moonlight, he carried his name down to the forgetting regions where he was nameless even to himself, but she was there before him, waiting behind the last door of his mind."

Really enjoying this so far! Reading it while snuggled in a chair with my kiddo, as my pup-in-law vigilantly watches the window for neighborhood dogs to gently growl at. Ah, vacation.

We are leaving tomorrow to visit family back in California for a couple weeks. I have narrowed it down to these 3 books and an e-reader.*

*Choices subject to change before we leave for the airport 😆

Patricia McKillip knows how to weave a beautiful tale. I am in awe of her ability to create beautiful, magical worlds that draw me in. They seem so simple, but are always written so deftly and the emotion of them is so subtle and genuine.

"You are not terrible", he said softly, "and I think you do love him, or you would not be so grieved. Be patient. It will be over soon."
"Soon is such a long word," she whispered.

It took me a while to get into this book, I think because it‘s very old-fashioned. But I think I see what everyone loves about it. It reaches for a certain grace, and I think it gets there in the end.

I‘m reading this one because it‘s downloaded to my Kindle and I‘m working. I prepped several books I‘ve been meaning to read. It comes highly recommended by Gail Carriger, who wrote the forward for my edition. I‘m 30% in and I‘m not sure how I feel about it. It feels a little bit like Wizard of Earthsea.

"Soon is such a long word". Such a phenomenal quote... Soon is perhaps the one word used to define time that has no concrete meaning. It's all relative. Is it weeks? Months? Years? It's soon ? and yes, it can feel like forever.

I've been gone for quite a while, drawn into trouble with work and my other passions. Designing new adventures for my D&D campaign, remembering what my PS4 looks like, finishing that 900+ page book, etc...

So. Here I begin another book on my TBR list. I honestly don't know if I'm going to fall in love with this one or regret the purchase. Only one way to find out!

Happy Friday! 🍻

#book haul from Half Price Books this morning. Confession: I‘ve already read all but one of these, but I‘m spending so much time rereading teen favorites that I don‘t feel bad buying them to have on hand. Plus, I‘ve been looking for some of these in hardcover for ages— how could I pass them by? Now I have a rainy afternoon to get started on my stack!

In a word—marvelous. In more words—it‘s easy to see why some people describe this as their “desert island” book. Sybel is a powerful young wizard living on a mountainside, isolated from the world of men & all its troubles until the day a soldier arrives on her doorstep with a baby in his arms. Gorgeous writing, a rich and fascinating world, a strong independent woman, and a fantastic cast of supporting characters make this a must read. Excellent.

Jabberwocky Bumping it up my TBR list! 7y

I started seeing a lot of chatter about this book on Twitter a couple of weeks ago so of course I went to my shelves to see if I had it. Turns out I had a lot of Patricia A. McKillip but not this one. I didn‘t remember reading it either, so I decided I should as a lot of authors whose work I like describe it as one of their favorite books. That‘s a good enough recommendation for me. Diving into my Friday night read...

The only thing better than a three day weekend is some book mail arriving just before it starts. Yay! Starting February off with some fantasy, science fiction, nonfiction and a YA debut before diving back into my, slowly but surely, shrinking TBR pile. Super excited to read all of them!

I have to say one of my favorite fantasy authors is Patricia A. McKillip. I can‘t even! She‘s written many books, some series, all with diverse story lines, lyrical writing and beautiful characters. I‘m obsessed.

My personal favorite is “The Forgotten Beasts of Eld” I‘ve read it 3 or 4 times by now. It‘s the kind of book I finished reading, flipped over, and started again.

First time reading one of Patricia McKillip's novels and this did not disappoint. Despite the time this novel was written, the characters hold up pretty well. Including the main character who is constantly challenged by the politics around her. The novel had wonderful prose as well. Definitely a must read if you wish to experience a different writing style. 5/5.
