“We save ourselves by saving others. That is the way of things; that is the way of the Sweep.”
By connecting Nan‘s journey to students‘ own experiences, the lesson would encourage them to recognize the value of friends in overcoming challenges, building empathy, and fostering positive relationships.
This book follows 11-year-old Nan Sparrow, an orphaned chimney sweep whose life changes when she is miraculously saved by Charlie, a golem made of ash and soot. Together, Nan and Charlie escape to a haunted house where they forge a new life, discovering the magic of friendship and family.

A beautifully written story about and 11 year old girl in Victorian London. She is orphaned at a young age and is indentured as a chimney sweep. She is all alone in the world except for her Golem, Charlie. This is a brilliant mix of fantasy, historical fiction and Jewish folklore.
This compelling novel is set in Victorian London, where young orphans are owned by chimney sweeps and forced to clean flues. Their life is hard and dangerous. They are malnourished, and work in hazardous conditions. Providing a fascinating insight into the harsh realities faced by many homeless children in 19th-century Britain, this moving page-turner is also an uplifting tale of friendship, love and kindness, enhanced with a touch of magic.
I have wanted to read this book since March when I first heard about it. I finally managed it. It seemed very long, but then ebooks often seem long to me. The story was sweet at times and the effort to protect children from people that would take advantage of them was admirable. #100YEARS100BOOKS #98 #BookSpinBingo #19 #TAILSandTALESforADULTS #25
I‘m continuing to read #middlegrade books even though it‘s April already. I just didn‘t fit enough in last month. This one is really great. #middlegrademarch
The school librarian suggested this when I mentioned I was listening to The Golem and The Jinni and I‘m so glad she did! What a beautiful tale of love and courage and how we can save ourselves when we save someone else. ❤️
Nan‘s sweep has been missing for 5 years and has left her with something that will change her life. As soon as she becomes an a orphan she realizes that the char is special and will change the course of her time.
Kicking off the day with my mom‘s famous coffee cake that I made yesterday. It‘s the first time I‘ve made it since she passed away. She would have been baking up a storm of these and having my dad do porch drops
This story broke my heart in five different ways. It's beautiful and humorous and oh, so sad. I don't mind admitting that I was sobbing by the end!
Listening to this audiobook, and loving it so far. Only 2 hours left, and that‘ll be another one complete for #JumpStart2020 @Lizpixie
Another summer read. A fantasy but one based around history and the story of children chimney sweeps and climbers in London. Well written and vivid, gives you the feels for the poor people who lived during that time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a wonderfully charming, refreshingly honest, beautifully crafted narrative! Such a delightful tale about struggling to find your place in the world, and fighting for what is right! I adored everything about this story; from its complex characters, to its simple yet moving plot; but especially the absolutely marvelous voice of the narrator: Nan Sparrow. I could not recommend this book enough! A treat to keep you warm during these cold months!
This is such a good book. I hope you can read it an enjoy it the way i did.
Some books know just how to land in your heart and stay there. Loved this middle grade novel 💙💚💜🧡

What an absolutely delightful MG historical fiction story. The life of a chimney sweep in 1800s London is a dangerous one. Nan is stuck in a chimney when a fire starts. Somehow, she wakes to find herself in an attic with a golem watching over her. This is a story of a courageous young girl, the families we make, being a minority/other & finding your way in a place that doesn‘t always accept you, & daring to make a difference. Recommended.
“That‘s how it works, doesn‘t it? We are saved by saving others.”
Last book in the preview pile. Excited to start this MG adventure which has gotten really good reviews.
A book about a little girl in Victorian London. She is a chimney climber. Her life is very depressing and tragic..Fortunately, she has a little bit of magic—and luck in her life. Surprisingly, I wished there were illustrations in this book. I would have loved to see what Charlie and Nan actually looked like in the author‘s eye. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just signed up for my first book swap, and I‘m so excited!! Thank you @TheBookKeepers for putting this on! #justabookswap
Hey! Did i tell y‘all this ended up being a TOP pick for 2018? I loved it. It‘s kinda like Oliver crossed with a fairy tale. Golems might be my favorite mythical creature. Well. After dragons and phoenixes. Anyway, I think that the lesson here is to never let #LibraryFines define you.

Loved this book - even more than the author‘s earlier book Night Gardener which I didn‘t think was possible. Beautifully written characters and a moving, emotional story. The endnotes connecting it to the history of the children who worked as chimney sweeps in the Victorian era were a great addition. Loved it!
Book 3: This book was adorable! And now I must nap, because I am still sick, and it‘s important to listen to your body. Hope everyone is having a wonderful #readathon so far! “See” you in a bit. 📚❤️😴

It‘s already hour five of the readathon! GO TEAM. I‘m enjoying SWEEP, and making lunch. I like to carbo-load for readathons like I‘m running a race. But then I get in my hammock in my jammies and read books. BEST. RACE. EVER. What‘s on the menu for you today? - @Liberty #readathon 📚
Started Sweep yesterday and am loving it. Decorated this weekend with all my Halloween stuff and washed all my Halloween socks and cannot wait to wear them all! 😊
I have this book and look forward to reading it. It could be a fun October read.
