Pretty Girls (Library)
Pretty Girls (Library) | Karin Slaughter
Lee Child says it s stunning certain to be a book of the year. Kathy Reichs calls it extraordinary a major achievement. Jeffery Deaver says that fiction doesn't get any better than this. Gillian Flynn says of Karin Slaughter: I d follow her anywhere. See for yourself what these #1 New York Times-bestselling authors are talking about.Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed. The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful novel from one of the finest writers working today."

This book was surprising. While you should heed the trigger warnings, I didn't find it as bad as some people were saying. I found that I couldn't put the book down; it was quite thrilling, and I was never sure where the next twist would be.

I was not expecting how dark this book got. It was a fast read, but I was invested in the characters and cared about what happened to them. Very well written with a satisfying ending. But damn it went to a dark place.

I loved characters so much! I rooted for them and hoped they would survive. Characters were well created and I loved how I couldn't know who were trustworthy and who weren't.

This had one brilliant twist and was super captivating.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this book locked me in from very early on. I was not expecting it to be so graphic and triggering; but wow what a tale. At times it was hard to read, but I continued to grasp for more information and to learn what really happened. Definitely beware of graphic scenes, but if you like an intense thriller…give it a go!

This book was really good! My jaw definitely dropped a few times! The middle started to really drag, though. Did not need to be this long of a book. Also, I would stay away from the audiobook. The way the author pronounced words that started with a wh.... kept reminding me of the episode of Family Guy when Stewie pronounced cool whip... 4/5

Bailedbailed

I just couldn't get into this one. A woman's husband is murdered and she discovers he was involved with videos of women being tortured and murdered. She and her sister, the other main character, are not very likeable, and the scenes seem too drawn out and slow. It is also pretty predictable (I checked at over halfway to confirm) Maybe if I were reading it instead of listening, I could have skimmed some and made it farther, but I bailed at 20%.

Slaughter writes some of the darkest shit I‘ve ever read, and I‘ll read every word. This gripping thriller kept me on the edge of my seat, broke my heart, and sewed it back together again. The best thing about this was the badass female characters. Smart, capable, and relentless, these woman leapt off the page. Whoa this book was a little deep in the dark side of humanity. This is the first book by Slaughter that I‘ve read so not sure if she normally writes about such disturbing subjects? I felt the story started out a little slow but definitely picked up in the middle with a few good twists I didn‘t see coming. This one may not be for everyone but if you have a tolerance for disturbing subject matter, I recommend!

5feet.of.fury Yeah she‘s pretty twisted. Some of her other books/series get some relief in the form of romance or character interactions. But they are all graphic and dark. 3y

This is dark. A story of a family who is utterly broken after the disappearance of their oldest daughter/sister decades ago. While a similar disappearance makes the news, The family is brought together unexpectedly when a tragedy befalls the youngest daughter. However nothing is as it appears, and they don‘t know who they can trust.

Impeccable writing, the characters, the conspiracy. The pacing had me unable to put it down. Horrifying. Wonderful

This book explores some pretty bleak aspects of humanity. Its conspiracies sometimes were more complicated than I could be bothered to keep up with and it also occasionally suffered for being told from multiple perspectives, but overall it was a good read. Just be warned though that it does explore graphic depictions of sexual violence.

My first foray into audiobooks now that I have a longer commute to work. I was not disappointed. I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters at first, but it was short-lived. The characters are not necessarily the most likable and it takes awhile before you understand the way in which the characters‘ stories intersect. At times, Karin provides TMI with the crime and the goriness of the violence, but I was hooked!!

If you are going to read this book, then you need to be aware of the seriously disturbed nature of the violence depicted. Thankfully, @CoverToCoverGirl and @LazyLibrary gave me a warning prior to jumping into this novel. Based on their warnings, I was actually expecting it to be a lot worse. My stomach for twisted is a bit higher than most, I think.
When Julia goes missing, all of her family members find their own ways to cope with the unknown⬇️

FelinesAndFelonies Most of them in unhealthy ways. Each of them grieving in their own way and falling into their own darkness. Claire and Lydia are the daughters left behind and living with the ghost of a sister who's presence is there though she is not. The story was packed full of twists and action and suspense. I finished this book in just under 24 hours. I couldn't put it down. I had to know if Claire and Lydia were okay. Definitely a solid thriller. 4y
FelinesAndFelonies This book will not be for everyone. TRIGGER WARNINGS ⚠️Graphic sexual violence, rape, torture, suicide, drug use, violence. 4y
BooksCoffeeNurse @FelinesAndFelonies I found this book to be very graphic. But I did still love the storyline and writing style. 4y
See All 11 Comments
LazyLibrary Yesssss! Not for the feint of heart! But great read!!! 4y
FelinesAndFelonies @BooksCoffeeNurse I have seen some pretty terrible things and read the statement of facts for over 600+ offenders. I think it becomes harder to be shocked when you realize how close violence lurks. They say on average we will each walk past 36 murderers in our lifetimes. I have personally walked past hundreds and had regular contact with dozens convicted of multiple murderers. But for people without that history I think this book would be shocking. 4y
5feet.of.fury @FelinesAndFelonies “We walk by 36 murderers in our life” 😳 I‘m shook. I love Karin. Def adding this to the TBR 4y
CoverToCoverGirl It was everything you described and more. Glad you enjoyed it! The “we walk by 36 murderers” I believe. Alan Legere, Noel Winters and James Hutchison are known to me. The first. a serial killer, I knew through his daughter, they lived on our street. The second, also a serial killer, resided over the hill from our cottage and the third was a family friend, he executed two policemen. It still scares me to this day, whenever it comes to mind. (edited) 4y
CoverToCoverGirl And I‘ve always lived a very quite and boring life, so you just never know who can wander into your sphere. 4y
FelinesAndFelonies @CoverToCoverGirl "you just never know who can wander into your sphere" is exactly the part of this book that is the most terrifying. You can never know the motives of a "chance" encounter. 4y
CoverToCoverGirl @Reggie @Reggie Right! Life truly is stranger than fiction. Legere was actually up for parole this past January but was denied, our whole province was terrified at the mere thought of it. This is a link if you are interested, they don‘t get much scary than this... https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/parole-board-refuses-release-of-killer-allan-legere-... 4y
