My Almost Flawless Tokyo Dream Life

"I'm here to take you to live with your father. In Tokyo, Japan! Happy birthday!" In the Land of the Rising Sun, where high culture meets high kitsch, and fashion and technology are at the forefront of the First World's future, the foreign-born teen elite attend ICSthe International Collegiate School of Tokyo. Their accents are fluid. Their homes are ridiculously posh. Their sports games often involve a (private) plane trip to another country. They miss school because of jet lag and visa issues. When they get in trouble, they seek diplomatic immunity. Enter foster-kid-out-of-water Elle Zoellner, who, on her sixteenth birthday discovers that her long-lost father, Kenji Takahari, is actually a Japanese hotel mogul and wants her to come live with him. Um, yes, please! Elle jets off first class from Washington D.C. to Tokyo, which seems like a dream come true. Until she meets her enigmatic father, her way-too-fab aunt, and her hyper-critical grandmother, who seems to wish Elle didn't exist. In an effort to please her new family, Elle falls in with the Ex-Brats, a troupe of uber-cool international kids who spend money like it's air. But when she starts to crush on a boy named Ryuu, who's frozen out by the Brats and despised by her new family, her already tenuous living situation just might implode. My Almost Flawless Tokyo Dream Life is about learning what it is to be a family, and finding the inner strength to be yourself, even in the most extreme circumstances.

This was an enjoyable read, set at the beginning in USA, Ellen lives in Washington DC and with foster parents. But life isn't easy. Suddenly she finds out that her long-lost father is rich and Japanese hotel mogul. She is jetted off to a completely new life full of luxuries she never thought was possible. But her new found family isn't so easy to live with. It comes with different problems.

Maybe it's because my life long dream of visiting #Japan was suddenly cancelled when this #pandemic started, but I really enjoyed this book. It really made me feel like I was there. 🇯🇵

5/5 for this one! I loved this. Elle experienced every bit of Tokyo! I want to go to cat island! The romance was sweet. The story was interesting. I felt for Elle as she goes through meeting a new family in a new place. I recommend this one.

This sweet Cinderella plot unexpectedly charmed me!

Bought this on sale for my cat/Manga/all things Japan-loving daughter, but she never tried it. 🤷‍♀️ Thought maybe my classroom library? However, I continued reading it even after I figured out it wasn't right for middleschool (14+ would work well). It's a fun, YA that made me feel like I'd taken my own mini dream trip to Tokyo. 😻

This book left me feeling meh! I felt like it was okay until the ending. I wish Elle had a better ending!

The plot was pretty simple and the characters a bit flat. The ending was unrealistic and quick, but really don't read this for any of that. Read it for all the details about Japan, which made me continue reading. I love Japan and it was cool reading about all the weird places and interesting customs.

One-word review: Vapid

Jennick2004 This isn‘t even the one you wanted to finish today was it? 🤣 6y
WanderingBookaneer @Jennick2004 : No 😬. I haven‘t touched that one, but I finished this one and am 300+ pages into another book. 😬😬 6y
gradcat That one-word review speaks volumes...thanks...I won‘t go there! 6y
rubyslippersreads Oh no! I was looking forward to this one. 😏 (I have to admit it was mostly due to the Maneki Neko on the cover.) 6y
Jennick2004 Wowza. Nice reading day!!! 6y

The narrator‘s voice is annoying at this point. Speaking of point, I don‘t think there is one. The only thing that has me considering finishing is that if I can plow through it at 3X, I‘ll be done in an hour.

DGRachel Wow, the narrator must sound like a chipmunk 🐿 at that speed. 😂 6y
kgriffith I really started using this feature for school this past semester; got through all of the assigned chapters for class one morning on my drive there 😏 6y
