Weaveworld | Clive Barker

Here is storytelling on a grand scale the stuff of which a classic is made. Weaveworld begins with a rug a wondrous, magnificent rug into which a world has been woven. It is the world of the Seerkind, a people more ancient than man, who possesses raptures the power to make magic. In the last century they were hunted down by an unspeakable horror known as the Scourge, and, threatened with annihilation, they worked their strongest raptures to weave themselves and their culture into a rug for safekeeping. Since then, the rug has been guarded by human caretakers. The last of the caretakers has just died. Vying for possession of the rug is a spectrum of unforgettable characters: Suzanna, granddaughter of the last caretaker, who feels the pull of the Weaveworld long before she knows the extent of her own powers; Calhoun Mooney, a pigeon-raising clerk who finds the world he's always dreamed of in a fleeting glimpse of the rug; Immacolata, an exiled Seerkind witch intent on destroying her race even if it means calling back the Scourge; and her sidekick, Shadwell, the Salesman, who will sell the Weaveworld to the highest bidder. In the course of the novel the rug is unwoven, and we travel deep into the glorious raptures of the Weaveworld before we witness the final, cataclysmic struggle for its possession. Barker takes us to places where we have seldom been in fiction--places terrifying and miraculous, humorous, and profound. With keen psychological insight and prodigious invention, his trademark graphic vision balanced by a spirit of transcendent promise, Barker explores the darkness and the light, the magical and the monstrous, and celebrates the triumph of the imagination.

Thanks for the tag @Parvez I‘m going to skip 1&2. 3- In Clive Barker‘s Weaveworld there is an orchard of peaches, where they are the juiciest and get you drunk off of happiness. It‘s located in a world woven into a carpet woven by the magic of the 4 families in hopes of escaping genocide at the hands of an angel. Unfortunately the orchard burns down when Weaveworld gets infiltrated by Immacolata, and Shadwell and the gyre gets destroyed.

CarolynM Well, it sounds like it was good while it lasted…😆 1y
Reggie @CarolynM lol, I know, I coulda left off that last sentence. 1y
Centique Happiest peach orchard sounds like a perfect setting 🙌 darn it when you can‘t even hide in a magic carpet forever though! 1y

Weaveworld is a fantasy epic that has great characters, exciting scenes, creative world building and much more. However, it felt too long and a little hard to get through. Check out our discussion about it on episode 8 of our podcast: https://bit.ly/3LhCzOK

KathyWheeler While I liked Weaveworld, I completely agree that it was far too long. 2y
mindduckbooks @KathyWheeler yeah, half way through the book I gave up and only came back to it after a few month because I wanted to discuss it on the podcast :D 2y
KathyWheeler @mindduckbooks It should have ended when the world was woven up the first time, but as I removed it, it was then unwoven and had to be rewoven a 2nd time. 2y
mindduckbooks @KathyWheeler yeah that was a little redundant:D I actually liked the ending of the second part a lot. If they edited the book and cut it down to 50-75% of the length, I think it would be an awesome book. Also, I was really interested what they would do with the memories and what you don't remember isn't real any more. I wish that would play a bigger role in the story. 2y
KathyWheeler @mindduckbooks I agree with everything you say here. 2y

Hubby and I are both big Clive Barker fans (from before we were together). I was lucky enough to meet him several times while he still lived in Liverpool.
Hubby did one better and worked with his brother and got invited to tea whilst Clive was there. Clive drew the pic in the book for hubby. I‘m not jealous.
Clive wrote genius horror/fantasy.

I read this book about thirty years ago, when in my twenties, and thought it 'da bomb!' Been considering netting myself a cooy to re read now but fear it may not live up to my memory. Have you ever been disappointed when revisiting a favourite read? Should I do this or let it remain a fond recollection!?

“Yes, fantastic fiction can be intricately woven into the texture of our daily lives, addressing important issues in fabulist form. But it also serves to release us for a time from the definitions that confine our daily selves; to #unplug us from a world that wounds and disappoints us, allowing us to venture into places of magic and transformation.” #QuotsyMar21

Reminded me of Imajica a bit, felt like the same world. 🤷‍♂️ Some bits were creepy as hell! 🙈

You really have to pay attention to this book when reading it, it's very complex, there's a lot of characters and it moves around a lot.

But it's one of the best books I've read of his and I definitely recommend this for anyone that likes epic adventure stories!

#WinterWonderland #SellMeACoat In Weaveworld, there‘s this charlatan named Shadwell who was given a coat made of magic made by Immacolata and her 2 sisters hell bent on revenge after being exiled from their place in a carpet that holds the four families of magic, the Seerkind. The coat is pretty pivotal throughout the story. It shows everyone their secret desires. Barker and this book were the beginning of me being a reader. #Firstbooklove

Finished this up yesterday! It was weird, fantastical and horrifying all in one!

Cal stumbles upon a magic carpet with a world hidden inside of it. Suzanna stumbles upon a family legacy. They both are thrown into a journey that takes them to another world, a world hidden within our own. Really enjoyed this and all the different characters it introduced. The main antagonist, Immacolata, is super creepy!

#getmovin #Sandstorm This part is where the bad guys, Shadwell and Hobart, go deep into the deserts of the Middle East searching for the long dormant Angel Uriel, The Scourge. They hope to find the angel to exterminate all the Seerkind, magical people who had woven themselves into a rug to protect them from the murderous angel when it was awake. Clive Barker is an author who got me into reading with his novels of fantasy and horror.

Wow! Since I knew that #CliveBarker was the author of the #Hellraiser series in wee book and big screen movies, I genuinely thought that this book would have been all blood, gore and twisted fantasies of some sort... And, its not! Took me by surprise, just how how laid back it is, yet keeping you on your toes and turning those 8306(I'm not kidding!) pages .

#autobuyauthors From upper left clockwise is Ana Castillo, Clive Barker, Robert McCammon, Julia Alvarez, and Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni. Clive is the first author I remember being 13 and staying up at our kitchen table reading until 2 in the morning. Robert writes with heart, above all else. And Ana, Julia, and Chitra let me know that if you feel like you're between worlds, you're ok, there's a lot of people out there who feel just like you do.

TrishB 💓 Clive! So went through an obsessive thing with his books. At one point every book was genius! 8y
Reggie @TrishB He was definitely different from anything out there. You don't forget reading him. I felt bad but i was listening to a podcast but it turns out he went to the dentist and a patch of bacteria loosened and caused him to go into a coma for a couple of months. He had 2 heart attacks while he was under but is still alive. Crazy huh? 8y
TrishB Wow! Didn't realise that. I followed him round Liverpool for a while, loads of book signings and readings, he was a nice bloke tbh. I did try and unearth family ties, but sadly none!! 8y

Whew! This one was a struggle for me to get through. It's not my usual genre but it was recommended by a friend so I didn't want to bail on it. I found the characters weren't developed very well and their behaviours and thoughts would change to suit the plot. Interesting imagery throughout, though.
