Plugging along through BLACK SUN RISING with my favourite schnauzer. It‘s not bad, but I haven‘t become invested in the characters or the story, so it‘s slower going than I want right now. (It probably doesn‘t help that I still can‘t stop thinking about THE TOMB OF DRAGONS by Katherine Addison.) One of the LT reviews said things click into place about 200 pages in, though, and I‘m ALMOST there. Hopefully that does it for me.

Lindy Oof. 200 pages is a lot of commitment before reaching any payoff. Stay strong! 2d

xicanti @Lindy I MIGHT pause and read something else before I finish. Depends on how this next chunk goes. I like it enough that I don‘t want to bail, but I feel like I‘ve lost momentum. 2d

I finished Katherine Addison‘s forthcoming novel last night and now I‘m BEREFT. Gonna try to drown my sorrows in Duffy snuggles and early-90s dark fantasy. C.S. Friedman is one of those authors I‘ve always been AWARE of but never quite managed to read, so it‘s about time I gave her work a try. It‘s off to a promising start.

Leniverse I remember that one as being really good! But I actually read it in the 90s so who knows what I would think of it today 😅 4d
xicanti @Leniverse so many of the things I loved back then haven‘t aged well, but thus one‘s well-written so far! Interesting worldbuilding, too. 4d

A dark academia fantasy/ horror novel about students with the gift of persuading others to their will. I thought it was clever and raised some good questions about free will and consent. It was a fun ride.

A wild, epic fantasy about a world doomed to darkness and the vampires that fight to rule. Gabriel's story continues, as he continues to protect Dior so she can fulfill the prophecy and put an end to the eternal night. This book is action filled, as our heroes constantly fight different vampires houses. The cruelty of the vampires is extreme, and there is very little happiness here. It is very intense and made me want to keep reading.

Jas16 I have these books sitting in my shelves. Really need to read them soon because they sound great. 3w
TheLudicReader I bought this when it first came out…but still haven‘t gotten around to reading it. Loved the first book. 3w

Fun and fairly quick read. Did not lean into the horror elements too much, but definitely a dark fantasy. My bookclub is reading this currently and everyone loves Hester 😂

This book was taxing, but not always in a bad way. It‘s dark, tragic, and emotional grimdark fantasy, so if that‘s your thing, go for it. It‘s also packed with action and interesting characters. However, I think the ending was the books weakest point, with sudden pacing issues and strange turns of character. Overall, an engaging start to a dark fantasy trilogy.
