The Cave Painters
The Cave Painters: Probing the Mysteries of the World's First Artists | Gregory Curtis
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The Cave Painters is a vivid introduction to the spectacular cave paintings of France and Spain—the individuals who rediscovered them, theories about their origins, their splendor and mystery. Gregory Curtis makes us see the astonishing sophistication and power of the paintings and tells us what is known about their creators, the Cro-Magnon people of some 40,000 years ago. He takes us through various theories—that the art was part of fertility or hunting rituals, or used for religious purposes, or was clan mythology—examining the ways interpretations have changed over time. Rich in detail, personalities, and history, The Cave Painters is above all permeated with awe for those distant humans who developed—perhaps for the first time—both the ability for abstract thought and a profound and beautiful way to express it. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I love that there‘s a copy of Surviving Infidelity (next to The Cave Painters) on Grace & Frankie‘s coffee table - a subtle nod to the fact that even though everything seems great with the exes (and even though they seem 3 years post-divorce), they‘re still dealing with the pain of it. Life definitely has a lot of mysteries and whether it‘s marriage or cave art - we have a desire to understand them and connect the past to the present.

Pickpick

Nice survey of both the art and the theories about the art, some of which made me look at it in a whole new way. It's a fascinating subject and Curtis did a good job of creating a readable narrative that explained a lot without resorting to any technical language. #science #art
