Chains (Reprint)
Chains (Reprint) | Laurie Halse Anderson
If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl? As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom. From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

Thanks to this challenge I've eventually managed to read Wodehouse (I might have read him before in German translation, some of it seemed familiar, but that must have been 30+ years ago).

Now to find a book with less than 225pp. 😁

Went through my physical pile of books and these are the ones I want to focus on for #SeriesLove2023 middle grade and YA edition. A couple of library titles thrown in to complete a couple series. Will I read them all? Nope. Will I stick to the plan? Not likely. Will I have fun? You bet!

TheSpineView My sentiments exactly! Good luck! 2y

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson is a historical fiction novel that was published in 2008 and is a Scott O‘Dell Award Book winner. It is about a 13-year-old Isabel who is an African American slave trying to fight for her and her sisters freedom during the American Revolutionary War. I think this could be a good novel for higher grades.

My second book read for #BattleOfTheBooks This was much better than the last one, City of Orphans, but this one wasn‘t much more than okay either. I feel like it started off strong and then just gradually died down. The middle felt quite dry and the end was just so abrupt. I will still be reading the next one though. 4⭐️

I appreciate that this novel offers a nuanced view of the Patriots and Loyalists of the American Revolution, and the author does a good job showing the lack of agency Isabel has as an enslaved young woman, but the novel doesn't completely work for me. The voice of the narrator is inconsistent, and the characters often act in ways that don't make sense to me. Despite the cliffhanger, I'm not inclined to read the next in the series.

megnews Chains absolutely amazing! I love Laurie Halse Anderson and enjoyed all three books but for me nothing could top the first. It was that great. 4y
ValerieAndBooks @megnews I read Fever 1793 many years ago and liked it. For some reason I thought this trilogy was for a much younger audience but when I saw Ashes in B&N recently felt I should read them all but they didn‘t have Chains. #ucfssechains I am 10 chapters into the book currently and I am so intrigued! I love the sister relationship we get to see between Isabel and Ruth. The way Isabel is so protective over Ruth reminds me of myself and my younger siblings. I'm curious to see how the book progresses with Isabel and Ruth living with the Locktons and her relationship with Curzon.

CherylVDM The opening of the book was disturbing. I know the story takes place at the time of the Revolutionary War but just the fact that the girls were “property” and were basically transferred after the death of their owner. I enjoy the character development Ruth. 5y
lina0217 I agree! the beginning was very disturbing. I was frustrated with the way Isabel was being treated by the Lockton's and how little control she had over her own life. One specific event that made me feel really sad for Isabel was In chapter 9 when Madame says that Isabel's name is ridiculous and her new name would be Sal Lockton because “it's more suitable“. Isabel was slowly being stripped of everything that belonged to her. 5y
aahmed21 Wow, the beginning of this book was intense for me. I didn‘t know what to think. As I continued reading I was trying to put myself in Isabel‘s shoes and was thinking about if I had been going through what she was dealing with or if I was to get treated the way she was being treated and it just brought a lot of frustration and anger to me. One thing that really bothered me was the girls being their “property”. So sad! Can‘t wait to continue reading 5y
RoblesMichelle In the first chapter when Isabel went looking for answers to her mother and asked what they should do next or where to go. I really found myself emotional and it was just the beginning. I really couldn't imagine going through what they had to endure during that period in time. When the pastor told Isabel you belong to Mr.Robert now I found myself quickly becoming angry because there was nothing they could do to prove they were to be freed. (edited) 5y
viankareyes I am also on chapter 10 and definitely am curious to see how it will be for Isabel living there. I wonder if she will go back and give her friend information or will she just keep it to herself! 5y

It is an incredible text that is set during the Revolutionary War and gives readers an insight into Isabel's life and he struggle to find her sister after escaping slavery. This book is part of a trilogy that I hope to read the next 2 books very soon! I would use this book as a IR or LC in my classroom.
