This was a #MoreMehThanYeah read.

Two timelines, one set in 1930s, one in 1880s.
Both about a Scottish woman taking care of their ailing fathers, both forced to work, one set mainly in Scotland the other mainly on the US east coast.

In 1930s, Emmie has come back to the UK from Australia, where she got a doctorate in botany and spent time discovering plants in jungles and deserts. ⬇️

julesG Emmie starts her treasure hunt and finds the diary of Hester, written 50 years ago. It tells how Hester grew up in the castle, then moved to the USA and then had to run for her life.

This book is not just a treasure hunt, but also a finding of identity. Because, it seems, no one involved in the story truly is who they pretend to be. (spoiler: it was rather obvious from the start) ⬇️ 12mo

julesG Annoyingly, the 1880s timeline about the Scottish woman who grew up in the Scottish Highlands until she was 9/10 years old then moved to the US with her Scottish father was narrated by an American. Why? This child and later woman would retain some of her Scottish accent, especially since she lived rather isolated with her father for quite some time. It pulled me out of the story every time. 12mo

Stories: The Collected Short Fiction | Helen Garner

I've just imported my books from goodreads into SG. I have no idea really how to use it. Any tips for a new user? I'm planning on doing the trial month and then paying for the upgraded version if I like it enough. Suggestions on how to get the most out of the app would be appreciated...or if there's a good youtube or tiktok tutorial, I'd go for that as well. Thanks!!

Kimberlone Tracking your progress on your currently reading is pretty similar to Goodreads, so you will pick up on it quickly. IMO the biggest asset of Storygraph is the automatically created graphs and statistics about your reading. If you keep your reading up to date, you can see your changing stats all throughout the year and month to month. I don‘t have the paid sub, but one optional feature I use regularly are tags to track the origin of each book. 12mo

Traci1 @Kimberlone I used GR mostly because I tend to forget if I've read a book or not. But other than that, it's been severely lacking. I'm excited about all the statistics. 12mo

I use it to track all my Litsy challenges, and also my monthly poetry reading, and a TBR challenge I picked cause it‘s open ended and I want to read the things that have been on my shelves a while, so I‘m tracking that this year. 12mo

Not sure who recommended this to me, a listoholic, but I thank the Litten who did it.?

This was fun, although, as always, I had an idea of what the MacGuffin was early on and where it was hidden. Also I knew who killed "Green Boots" and why and why (no, that is not a typo, read the book or listen to it to find out why ?). But I do read very carefully and pay attention to words and punctuation.

Thanks to this challenge I've eventually managed to read Wodehouse (I might have read him before in German translation, some of it seemed familiar, but that must have been 30+ years ago).

Now to find a book with less than 225pp. 😁
