Innocent Traitor
Innocent Traitor: A Novel of Lady Jane Grey | Alison Weir
16 posts | 43 read | 37 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Alison Weir's Mary Boleyn. I am now a condemned traitor . . . I am to die when I have hardly begun to live. Historical expertise marries page-turning fiction in Alison Weirs enthralling debut novel, breathing new life into one of the most significant and tumultuous periods of the English monarchy. It is the story of Lady Jane Greythe Nine Days Queen a fifteen-year-old girl who unwittingly finds herself at the center of the religious and civil unrest that nearly toppled the fabled House of Tudor during the sixteenth century. The child of a scheming father and a ruthless mother, for whom she is merely a pawn in a dynastic game with the highest stakes, Jane Grey was born during the harrowingly turbulent period between Anne Boleyns beheading and the demise of Janes infamous great-uncle, King Henry VIII. With the premature passing of Jane s adolescent cousin, and Henrys successor, King Edward VI, comes a struggle for supremacy fueled by political machinations and lethal religious fervor. Unabashedly honest and exceptionally intelligent, Jane possesses a sound strength of character beyond her years that equips her to weather the vicious storm. And though she has no ambitions to rule, preferring to immerse herself in books and religious studies, she is forced to accept the crown, and by so doing sets off a firestorm of intrigue, betrayal, and tragedy. Alison Weir uses her unmatched skills as a historian to enliven the many dynamic characters of this majestic drama. Along with Lady Jane Grey, Weir vividly renders her devious parents; her much-loved nanny; the benevolent Queen Katherine Parr; Janes ambitious cousins; the Catholic Bloody Mary, who will stop at nothing to seize the throne; and the protestant and future queen Elizabeth. Readers venture inside royal drawing rooms and bedchambers to witness the power-grabbing that swirls around Lady Jane Grey from the day of her birth to her unbearably poignant death. Innocent Traitor paints a complete and compelling portrait of this captivating young woman, a faithful servant of God whose short reign and brief life would make her a legend. An impressive debut. Weir shows skill at plotting and maintaining tension, and she is clearly going to be a major player in the . . . historical fiction game. The Independent Alison Weir is one of our greatest popular historians. In her first work of fiction . . . Weir manages her heroines voice brilliantly, respecting the pasts distance while conjuring a dignified and fiercely modern spirit. London Daily Mail

My first read of Weir‘s fiction, and I sadly wasn‘t impressed. I did enjoy knowing more about Lady Jane Grey, but I found the writing just too modern in many places. Perhaps her later novels are better! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

What an interesting, page turner of historical fiction. Loved this perspective of Tudor England from the front line, written by one of the nonfiction experts of that period. So, so good! Has been on my #TBR for too long, thanks for the push to read it, @TheAromaofBooks and @Andrew65 and, as always, my reading companions #BookspinBingo #marvellousmarch

It is over. My trial has ended and I am now back in the Tower of London, this place that was once my palace and is now my prison. #firstlinefridays @ShyBookOwl

I liked this retelling of Lady Jane Grey‘s short life. She exuded #innocence as only a hardheaded teen can. After looking at the author‘s website, I want to read more of her books. http://www.alisonweir.org.uk/books/bookpages/innocent-traitor.php

vkois88 I've looked at this one, just never picked it up. I read her book about Anne Boleyn... I think it was the tagged book below... I wasn't overly fond of it. It seemed to drag out and added random facts that didn't necessarily pertain to Boleyn. 7y
Ubookquitous Weir is an awesome historian who has written fiction that is great 7y
Godmotherx5 @vkois88 I read The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. My former book group read it & we all liked it. 7y

Godmotherx5 @Ubookquitous I‘ve read the one book by Weir. Do you recommend anything in particular? 7y
vkois88 @Godmotherx5 I've read that one and loved it 7y
Ubookquitous I also like Philippa Gregory. As for Weir, I like to read a novel then a related history or vice versa. I think a favorite for history is Eleanor of Aquitaine:A Life, and for fiction 7y
Godmotherx5 @Ubookquitous Sounds good. 7y

The only cover I could find that was bit more focused on her hair. But it's all stuffed in a snood, so definitely not #hairthereandeverywhere! #anditsaugust

#truths An excellent non-fiction book by Alison Weir, as always, about Lady Jane Grey - The Nine Day Queen who followed Edward VI in the Tudor period. A very sad story but was a great read.

Melissa_J This one is actually fiction 😉 8y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J You'd think as I'd read it a few years ago that I'd remember it was fiction not non-fiction! 😬Good catch. 😊 (edited) 8y
Andrew65 As my first entry was fiction, I will change my book for the tag #truths to 8y
Melissa_J I find it difficult to distinguish between her books sometimes, since she writes both fiction and non-fiction you'd think her book blurbs would more clearly indicate if a book is a novel or a work of non-fiction. They don't always do this. 8y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J I agree, I have at times picked up one of her books expecting fiction to suddenly find it is non-Fiction. 8y

First time I've read this author's fiction, after being a fan of her nonfiction for years. Definitely recommended if juicy royal drama is your thing - fascinating story about a (to me) lesser known figure. The audiobook was excellent!

Betty_Bookworm Oh! She always wrote the best non fiction royalty stuff. I may have to check this out. 8y

Wow. I devoured this account of the life of Lady Jane Grey written as historical fiction rather than non-fiction. Such a rich and immersive but devastating story. Well worth the 99p it is on kindle today. ❤️

BarbaraTheBibliophage I love Tudor-era historical fiction. I sure wish it was on sale today in the U.S. also. 8y
Eastbriar I have this on my list to read soon! I just finished her Henry VIII biography and Lady In The Tower and they were amazing. I may have to take advantage of that deal! 8y
lucy_literati I'm about to start her second novel - The Lady Elizabeth. Can't get enough! I'll check out her non-fiction too then if you think they're amazing! 8y
