The title is absolutely misleading and the author could have done so much better. However, the book is a fun read. The story revolves around immigrant punjabi widows in London who wanted to learn and write English from Nikki but somehow ended up writing erotic stories.
You would not believe the twists and turns such a simple plot could have. A definite page turner (especially when you skim through the stories) and a wholesome fun read.

The title might mislead some readers (it misled me, I‘m not too proud to admit it) into thinking this is purely a comedic novel, an older-women-behaving-badly romp with lots of literal lols. It‘s definitely entertaining, but it‘s also meaningful, and there‘s a lot of depth to it if you‘re reading it as a feminist text. This book took me completely by surprise, I loved it so much!

The women, and how they cheered and protected each other was the highlight for me. And the stories were 🌶🌶🌶

This book has become one of my top reads for 2024!

For the rest of the week, I‘m challenging myself to wrap-up a big chunk of the books I‘m currently in the middle of 😅…

I had to give back the Kindle copy of this one to the library, but I was able to get the audiobook. It‘s so good!

I finished this last night and it was a race to the end. I really like how the story is going along nicely and then TWIST. Lots of fun with some dark undertones. Very spicy (it‘s not just a clever title).
Read if you like girl power and reading about different cultures.

This was easy and fun. I really liked how it was set in London but in a very different version of London than usually. The story was slightly different than I expected but still a nice read.

I picked this up to read about Punjabi widows telling erotic stories and it delivered. I was surprised by where else the plot went, did not see the crime aspect coming but I really liked it. It was funny but serious and sweet and sad, so much depth in these characters. Really enjoyed this.

I enjoyed this book. It had humor, yes, but it also had lovely bits of wisdom in it. The widows of the story made me smile. It was ultimately a story about finding your voice, friendship, and love.

I could not put this book down. I don't think I have ever loved a book so much! I appreciated how this story was so original and unique. It gave voice to culture, relationship roles, family expectations, and desire. This book reminds us that everyone has unique desires and longings, which does not go away as we age. This book was beautifully written! It tied in mystery, romance, culture, and desire to create a beautiful and complex story.

Bingo for #bookspinbingo! February was a rollercoaster month. I am very glad I included space for mood reads because they were needed. I tried hard to get into I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings for #authoramonth, but my brain was not having it and that's okay. I will try again another time.

Favorite read of the month is tagged!

Hello somewhat misleading title. This book was so much more than I expected in a very good way. The detailed stories from the widows were the best. Here are these women risking everything to carve out a space were they can express themselves without judgement. Along the way, the women discover the power their voices have when they come together. This was a beautiful book about love, life, and second chances.

This book takes a very different approach to explain a topic, or topics. These women always have to worry about what others say and think. Their lives are somewhat controlled, with a certain way to think, act and be. I love that these widows found their voices thru erotic stories! This book is funny, insightful, and has a bit of a mystery thrown in. I really enjoyed it.

Surprisingly enjoyable and informative read with a tad of spice! “Don‘t let the title fool you”, I was advised. So true!

Endearing characters. Women‘s Rights. Cultural Issues. Ultimately uplifting.

Photograph of Indian widows who have broken the age old rule that widows can not take part in holiday celebrations. I imagined the faces of the widows in Nikki‘s writing class with their various expressions of joy and Sisterhood.Audio was wonderful!

I liked the friendship in the story. The widows were hilarious. I found myself cracking up a lot when I was on my walk with Riot listening to this book. Hopefully people didn‘t think I was some crazy lady. Anyway, I felt like the romance was just okay in this book. Also, the part with Mia and the killer was drawn out and I felt like it took away from the story.

Admittedly, the title would have scared me off if it weren't for all the positive reviews and the fact that this was a Reese's Book Club pick.

There were steamy stories, but also so much more to this book.

This was a fun book with some serious issues. Nikki takes a job to teach women from the Indian community English, but Nikki thought she would be teaching story writing. Somehow they begin to tell each other erotic stories which one of the women wrotes down. The class must be careful as the "moral police" the Brotherhood don't like certain behaviour by women. Also some young women go missing and died, Nikki wonders if there is more to this. #books

I enjoyed this book on many different levels. The title was just too much fun - I had to buy it based solely on the title! It was really interesting to read about how women living in a patriarchal society find small ways to express personal freedoms in their lives. An interesting study of the roles of men and women living in a traditionally male dominated society. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Generally, I would not go for such a title but I am glad that I did.Yes,its spicy and erotic but its more than that, its about womanhood, women expressing themselves freely, expressing there hopes, desires and pleasures, giving confidence to women of all ages.Women and men of all ages(well atleast 21 years and above) should read this book.It has mystery, romance and a whole lot of humour!!!

Meera Syal's voice has been keeping me company on my morning walks. Interesting multi-dimensional story that addresses issues surrounding preservation of traditional culture in an immigrant community, particularly in relation to the position of women. As for the erotic stories themselves - I enjoy sex scenes as the pay-off for the romance in a story - anonymous sex scenes are just a bit boring, really. Thanks @Cinfhen for putting this on my radar.

Come-read-with-me I just started reading this one and am really enjoying it! 4y

I really enjoyed this book about a group of “Punjabi widows” who join a writing class and begin to write risqué stories together. Through the support of the other women and the teacher of the class, who the story is centered around, they find their own voices and strength. There‘s so much about culture and expectations and women‘s empowerment this book and some mystery and suspense, too. This is not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it!

This was sort of all over the place but I really liked it. Nikki takes a job as a creative writing teacher but everyone seems to have a different idea about what that means. And there is a murder mystery and some love stories thrown in. And the widows are something else entirely.
