A Writer's Diary
A Writer's Diary | Virginia Woolf
An invaluable guide to the art and mind of Virginia Woolf, drawn by her husband from the personal record she kept over a period of twenty-seven years. Included are entries that refer to her own writing, others that are clearly writing exercises; accounts of people and scenes relevant to the raw material of her work; and comments on books she was reading. Edited and with a Preface by Leonard Woolf; Indices.

I've been reading this for months now in-between other books and at times I can't spare more than a few minutes. I'm sorry it's over, but I've got Shirley Jackson's letters to read now.

I'm enjoying this so much. It'll take awhile though. It's the sort of thing I want to save for when I really need it rather than reading it every day.

Happy International Women's Day! 💖 To celebrate, I wanted to highlight my favorite author; Virginia Woolf, who was one of the most influential 20th Century modernist writers! 😍 She has been such a huge influence in my life! 📚💕

Leftcoastzen I love her too! As you know, wonderful collection! 5y
Meaw_catlady I need to read something by her! What would you suggest first? 5y
Branwen @Leftcoastzen Thanks so much! It's so wonderful to share in the love of such an amazing woman and writer! 😁 5y

Branwen @Meaw_catlady OMG this is the best question I have ever been asked, EVER! *screams with delight* Okay. Yes. So I would suggest two places where you could start! (1) Mrs Dalloway. It's not her first book, but it's the book that really made a big splash with her stream of consciousness writing style. Also it's my favorite book by her, so I'm a bit biased! 😁 5y
Branwen @Meaw_catlady (2) Orlando. This book is an AMAZING story about gender. Basically tje main character starts the story as male and then changes to female. It was groundbreaking for its time! 😀 5y
Meaw_catlady @Branwen yay!!! Amazing ! I will get both of these ASAP! I‘m EXCITED !! 5y

I‘m slowly reading Virginia Woolf‘s diary entries, studying them, and highlighting quotes. I‘ve been suffering from writer‘s burnout, so I‘m hoping that reading her words as a woman and writer will ease my struggle. The highlighted part makes me laugh. I can‘t read my printed work without blushing and wishing to redo it or wanting to hide.

Happy wedding anniversary to Virginia and Leonard Woolf! She wrote in her diary against the idea that marriage grows stale. Instead, Woolf writes: "The truth is more like this--say 4 days out of 7--becomes automatic; but on the 5th day a bead of sensation forms which is all the fuller and more sensitive because of the automatic customary unconscious days on either side. That is to say the year is marked by great moments of intensity." ❤️

kdwinchester Virginia is my FAVORITE!!! 😍 8y

Pickpick

Rereading Mrs. Dalloway to play along with The Happy Reader book club; it's wonderful and, you know, a bit of a challenge. So I picked up A Writer's Diary to see what it might add (quite a bit) and guess what? It is NOT a challenge. It's addicting. It's literary-genius-flavored potato chips.

dairine Am I horrible that I REALLY didn't like Mrs. Dalloway? I'm awful, aren't I? 8y

OSChamberlain I read that exact same copy for my Brit lit class. Also had a hard time with it but liked it enough that I want to revisit it one of these days. 8y
SusanInTiburon @dairine Heavens no! It's Virginia Woolf! She wrote to please herself; she made no effort to please the likes of us! For me, parts of it are gorgeous and other parts are ... hard work. 8y
Mayread That reminds that someone absconded with my Bell. Does she get bitchy about Joyce & Eliot in this one, too? 8y
MrBook I have that copy. It's a beautiful cover. 8y
Gezemice That's great to know! I might need to get a copy of that! I did love Mrs Dalloway but it was definitely hard work in parts. I found you kind of need to get into a rythm to enjoy it but if you do it is fantastic! 8y
SusanInTiburon @Skiles She's scathing about Ulysses, mostly because she finds it, and Joyce, lower-class. T.S. Eliot appears frequently as a member of her circle, but her opinion of his work is muted. 8y
Mayread @Susanintiburon Haha. Love it. Well, I might as well pile another one on.. 8y
dairine @Susanintiburon I feel vindicated. It was beautiful in some places, when it wasn't a slog. 8y
