The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun
The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun | J. R. R. Tolkien
10 posts | 8 read | 25 to read
The world first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien, which tells the epic story of the Norse hero, Sigurd, the dragon-slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrn, and the Fall of the Niflungs. "Many years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien composed his own version, now published for the first time, of the great legend of Northern antiquity, in two closely related poems to which he gave the titles The New Lay of the Vlsungs and The New Lay of Gudrn. In The Lay of the Vlsungs is told the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Ffnir most celebrated of dragons, whose treasure he took for his own; of his awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and of their betrothal; and of his coming to the court of the great princes who were named the Niflungs (or Nibelungs), with whom he entered into blood-brotherhood. In that court there sprang great love but also great hate, brought about by the power of the enchantress, mother of the Niflungs, skilled in the arts of magic, of shape-changing and potions of forgetfulness. In scenes of dramatic intensity, of confusion of identity, thwarted passion, jealousy and bitter strife, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, of Gunnar the Niflung and Gudrn his sister, mounts to its end in the murder of Sigurd at the hands of his blood-brothers, the suicide of Brynhild, and the despair of Gudrn. In The Lay of Gudrn her fate after the death of Sigurd is told, her marriage against her will to the mighty Atli, ruler of the Huns (the Attila of history), his murder of her brothers the Niflung lords, and her hideous revenge. Deriving his version primarily from his close study of the ancient poetry of Norway and Iceland known as the Poetic Edda (and where no old poetry exists, from the later prose work the Vlsunga Saga), J.R.R. Tolkien employed a verse-form of short stanzas whose lines embody in English the exacting alliterative rhythms and the concentrated energy of the poems of the Edda."Christopher Tolkien

I came home to some wonderful #bookmail today! Thanks so much for adding to my Tolkien collection, Cydney!

#YearofTolkien friends, this one is now officially on my shelf to read at some point.

CBee Yay! I hope you enjoy it ♥️😁 6y
JazzFeathers I have still to read any of these more academic of Tolkien's book. I really should at some point. 6y
Daisey @CBee @JazzFeathers This was one I really hadn‘t considered seriously until recently. I‘m much more interested after reading the History of the Hobbit and seeing this story considered such an inspiration and influence. 5y

A special #signedsunday this week to showcase my lovely deluxe collector's edition of Sigurd and Gudrún, a story that inspired so much of Tolkien's legendarium. It might not be signed my the great man himself but this is the next best thing. This book is almost solely responsible for #NoBooksNovember. I'll have l gaze upon its beauty whenever I'm feeling weak 😍😬

elkeOriginal GORGEOUS!!! 7y

There I was breathing a sigh of relief because there was nothing that particularly caught my eye on the Folio Society Christmas Collection. And then this landed...
Why, oh why can't they take pity on my poor bank balance? #foliofreaks #foliofriday

saresmoore I have nothing to say about this that wouldn‘t be considered enabling. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore well, enabling assumes that I haven't already bought it (which I have 😳). It's definitely going to be #NoBooksNovember for me 7y
saresmoore 🙌 Oh, good! Please do share photos of it when it arrives so I can drool over them. 🤤 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore at this rate I may have to start charging a fee! 7y
