A dark and twisted crime novel, perfect for fans of Ragdoll. 'A thrilling curtain raiser for what looks set to be a great new series' Mick Herron 'A powerful thriller from an explosive new talent. Tightly plotted, and not for the faint hearted!' David Mark A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District's prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless. When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation he wants no part of. Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant, but socially awkward, civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it. As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he's ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive ... 'Satisfyingly twisty and clever and the flashes of humour work well to offer the reader respite from the thrill of the read.' Michael J. Malone

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Oddly named detective, Washington Poe, & the National Crime Agency (NCA) have mutually turned their backs on each other following an incident on Poe's last case. He is reluctantly brought back into the fold when the third victim of a serial killer is found with Poe's name carved into his chest. The victims are being burned alive in old stone circles in Cumbria & as yet, the police are nowhere near catching the killer. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Poe is teamed up with his old sergeant, Flynn (who has been temporarily promoted to Poe's old rank) & a brilliant but socially awkward civilian analyst, called Tilly Bradshaw. Working together, sometimes against the wishes of those in charge, this small team races to find the killer before they strike again.

OutsmartYourShelf There's no shortage of crime series with maverick police detectives who buck the system, but I quite liked Washington Poe. The best character though is Tilly, some of her 'without filter' comments at the meeting with the Bishop had me laughing out loud & her friendship with Poe looks like it may make the series rather enjoyable. Their humorous moments help balance out the fact that the case itself was very dark & generally unpleasant. 2y
OutsmartYourShelf Overall it kept my attention well (although I guessed the identity of the killer) & it was intriguing enough for me to buy the next one in the series. 4.5 🌟

TWs: violent death, paedophilia, sexual assault.

Back to work but yesterday was a Bank Holiday & I spent some time reading a new crime series with a decent police detective Washington poe. Fairly clichéd characters including what nowadays seems to be stereotype quirky young computer nerd but overall it was a good start and I will read more. Plot is a series of murders in Cumbrian stone circles, evidence points to suspended poe who is brought in to investigate with his new friend tilly Bradshaw.

After reading the middle book of the 3 he has written in this series so far ,I got this one the 1st ,which filled me in on the characters of Tilly and Poe. I love these two. And will read his 3rd next and hope that there are more to come. Once again the ending was a surprise and just when I thought it was solved there was more, then more. Loved it.

The Puppet Show was bloody brilliant. I was hooked from the beginning, it kept me on the edge of my seat and I could hardly put it down. It was a fast-paced book, I loved the characters and can't wait to read more of Tilly and Poe which I will soon enough because I immediately bought the next two Tilly and Poe books after reading this one. Highly recommend The Puppet Show to anyone who likes crime thrillers with epic twists and turns!

TrishB Great pic 👍🏻 this is a great series. 4y

I think I‘ve read 2 books in total this month and was desperate to recapture my reading mojo. This fulfilled that goal and then some. One of the more compelling “first in a series” books I‘ve read in a while. Loved the character dynamics and the plot was really well thought out and executed. Immediately downloaded the rest. 👍🏼 #StartASeries #SeriesRead2021

TrishB I think I was going through one of those slumps too and these really helped! The characters are great. I brought them all too and have now read them before the next is due out. 4y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB It‘s not even that I‘m slumping necessarily. I desperately want to read but work has just been insane. And then when I‘m done, I‘m exhausted. Pesky job. 😒 Happy Mothers‘ Day, love! 😘 4y
TrishB I just worked all afternoon today as had Friday off. It definitely is exhausting. Thank you ❤️ 4y
eanderson This book saved me from a potential slump. The whole series got me going. Glad you enjoyed it. Forewarning.... the second one has a dark eating description and the third is sad but probably my favorite so far in the series. 4y

MicheleinPhilly When WFH started for everyone I was very proud of doling out advice to my co-workers on taking breaks, including lunch, and setting up boundaries regarding schedules, etc. Now I rarely follow my own advice. 😔 4y
TrishB @Kdgordon88 it definitely is 😞 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly some days I will get a 30 min break, but no one else is around to take the dog out so she comes first. Which then means I eat crap in the middle of meetings, I guess we know what we should do but just don‘t get chance 😞 4y

Last book of 2020 finished. First book on the new bookshelves. I stayed up late! So worth it though. If you are a series person like me and enjoy detective stories, this is a great one! I‘m happy I ordered the next 2 from Book Depository. I love Poe‘s brashness and Bradshaws blunt honesty. I had a feeling about one of the twists but it didn‘t ruin the experience of this book. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Crazeedi I love series, so I'm going to check it out! 4y

eanderson @TrishB haha! That‘s awesome! I‘m sure you will like it. Washington Poe kind of falls in line with a male version of Kim Stone but not as badass. @Crazeedi I think you should! I‘ve seen a lot of praise for the author on Facebook. 4y
TrishB I probably brought it last time someone recommended it! 4y

Whew! Finished in one go! It‘s fast paced and a great airplane read (with respect). Two new characters to root for : Washington Poe is the police detective, and Tilly the computer whiz. Thought these two would be cliches, but gradually found Pie‘s got secrets and Tilly is braver and more interesting than first thought. Someone is killing then setting the victims on fire. Won‘t be surprised to see this on Netflix.

Tonton Poe not Pie, damn autocorrect! 5y

I'm a bit late to the party when it comes to this series, but I have without doubt found a new favorite character duo as well as a contender for the 2019 favorites list! Absolutely brilliant read.

This was such a great read. I loved it from beginning to end and was conflicted because I wanted to get to the end and discover the resolution but at the same time it was so good I didn't want it to end.I want Tilly as a new best friend. She's so adorable and awkward but and so strong, just what Poe needs. Poe is the perfect character for me, well developed throughout but still with his secrets and mysteries.I want more Poe...I need more Poe.

Glad I picked this up - a good police procedural with an interesting ‘odd couple‘ pair investigating - gruff Washington Poe and socially awkward Tilly Bradshaw. The fog & stone walls of Cumbria are brought to life nicely. Graphic at times and I guessed (part of) the plot but it held my interest and I liked the ending. Has potential as a series.

#BookMail today was the Goldsboro BOTM book for June. It a signed & numbered first edition plus it came with the bookmark which has a passage from the novel on it. It sounds intriguing. A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake Districts prehistoric stone circles. When Detective Washington Poe‘s name is found carved into the chest of the latest victim, he‘s brought back from suspension to spearhead an investigation he wants no part of.
