Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned about Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat
Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned about Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat | Gwen Cooper
21 posts | 22 read | 10 to read
ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS. The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen's veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who'd been abandoned. It was love at first sight. Everyone warned that Homer would always be an "underachiever." But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen's life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer's unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen's life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn't something you see with your eyes.

Finished up this book while watching March Madness. I enjoyed it a lot! A memoir about adopting a blind kitten and how the cat‘s spirit impacted her life/way of thinking. Definitely makes me appreciate my kitty all the more, especially given my Sammy is turning 16 in a couple months. Was a nice reminder to love him even in those moments of frustration

Another true story about one little kitten who beat the odds. With an infection that was life threatening, a surgery removing his eyes was the only option. They were sutured shut, and no one wanted to adopt him, so the author took him in with her two other cats. He saved her life from a burglar and was in NYC when 9/11 happened; Homer taught the author to take chances.

@MaleficentBookDragon Thank you so much for everything! I feel like you spoiled me, and I know I was no help as far as picking out books go leaving it as wide open as I did 😂 Both books sound interesting and maybe not something I would‘ve picked up myself so I love that - I enjoy moving out of my usual genres more. Fallen in love with some surprises that way

Thank you again! Happy Holidays!

1. I retired! 🎉 I had surgery! 🤕
2. Tagged! It‘s shocking, I know, that I would pick a book about a black cat 🐈‍⬛ and it‘s also my #July pick for #12booksof2021 since I‘m already out of chron order with that anyway. 😉

3. Adjust to the changes wrought by both events mentioned above. Also travel? 🤞🏼

Andrew65 Thanks for the tag. Hope you had a good 2022. (edited) 3y

Any book set in Mew York City in 2001 is going to lead inevitably to a 9/11 story, and this book is no different. It‘s just one chapter in the story of this intrepid cat and his human and feline friends. #falltreasures

Leftcoastzen I‘ve been meaning to read this one. 3y

Attention: the cat lives through the book! This was my biggest concern going in (though I did look up Gwen‘s blog to find out what happened after the book, and that did make me cry). Not a perfect book, and I felt it dwelt too much on romances, but it‘s a nice story.
I was unprepared for the section on 9/11, fair warning. It‘s visceral and gut-punching.
Six done from my #bookspin list! @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo! Great work - and I'm glad that the cat lives! I'm always worried about that with animal stories! 5y

This story is as much about a blind wonder cat as it is about the author‘s journey through her 20s and 30s, a move to NYC, and the meaning of family. The cat in this photo is my cat, not Homer.

A heartwarming memoir for cat lovers. Homer was a feisty little black cat who had a serious infection that resulted in the loss of both eyes. Though the author already had two cats and a temporary housing situation, she adopted Homer and watched him fearlessly explore their shared world. His open heart and unwavering loyalty inspired her to take a few risks with her own heart.

Really sweet, charming story. It‘s definitely for the cat lover to read. I‘m not one for non-fiction novels but I enjoyed this one very much.
