so-soI found this volume fatiguing. I had trouble connecting with and keeping track of the characters, and since this trilogy is a period of US history told through the lives of individual characters, not connecting with them makes it difficult to glean meaning. I did note the use of the word "privilege" and other sentiments in use today, which gives me a sense of history repeating itself. Knowing what happened after WWI, this isn't comforting.

panIn the end, I really felt nothing for this book. I could appreciate that Dos Passos was being really very clever and experimental and all of that, but perhaps just too much so for me to actually enjoy reading. He makes some good points about the “upwardly mobile“ classes in capitalist systems, but he was too busy Doing A Thing(TM), in my opinion. I've read, in three days, the perplexing and enthralling The Fifth Season and the mostly charming The Charwoman's Daughter. I am still delighted by Anniversaries and will continue on with 1919.

so-soThe second book of the USA trilogy wasn‘t as good as the first and ends on a major downer. The biggest problem was that, this being basically plotless, the characters are the most important thing, and I didn‘t connect with any of the characters in this one as much as the first. After two weeks of reading, I‘ve finally reached the midpoint of this book. Not enjoying it as much as the first, needless to say.
